  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

You sir have just stated everything that I feel this camera will be. Small, 2K, better than 4:2:0, and around $5,000.
I think those who are clamoring for the Red One at 1/4th the price are barking up the wrong tree.

4:4:4, Interchangeable lens, for a pocket cam? It's really too much for a pocket cam.

Agree with you both.

Anxious for NAB tho.

Great post, Paul. I pretty much agree with you 100%. I can't tell you how many disagreements I've gotten into with people who have truly unrealistic expectations. Simply put, if Scarlet is the camera you described Red will have my money. Five weeks and counting....

No flat head screws! Flat head screws are for sheet rock hanging and woodworkers who don't know how to make a decent joint.

Im sure Jim realized long ago that the HVX/EX1 level is where the huge market is, and for the person who mentioned scarlet as being a tube cam...that market is very little and its only for special occasions.

Red has its market. Scarlet will have its market too. The doors are open for it, she better not let that market down.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that it's gonna be a tube camera which will make this motion capture thing that Robert Zemekis likes so much easier.
If scarlet is another video camera it'll end up competing with the red one as a tube camera for motion capture purposes it's a Pro device which doesn't compete with the red one and it fits in your pocket.
It sounds a lot more logical to me than some miracle s35 mm sensor motion picture camera that somehow fits in your pocket.

There is virtually no market for a "tube camera." Seriously, I doubt they'd sell much more than the Red One is selling now. Jim has stated that he expects the Scarlet to handily outsell the Red One. And don't forget, the Red One was considered a "miracle" camera when it was announced a few years ago.

Still a "miracle" to put out a camera that does so much at a fraction of the price of it's competitors.

exactly, a miracle cam for $30,000 vs $150,000+ for other cameras, Red is a breakthrough, most of the high end cams cant even capture 4k some cant do 2k

Scarlet will be successful if its targeted for the Indy filmmakers in the DVX, HVX, EX1 arena. Filmmakers want better quality and no compression. People know what artifacts, macroblocking, jaggies etc. are

If scarlet offered a clean Redcode Raw image with a high latitude and no noise,
well thats what we're looking for. I do love the revolution of Red and the Red cam. But seriously, just because another professional camera is coming out which clearly was mentioned as not a "replacement" why do we have to bitch about it. Not everyone can afford $30,000 some people can afford say $5000

A smart businessman will cater to both, and if one or two guys gonna bitch about the features being found on their bigger toy, well there's a huge market and enough buyers to make up for their bitching.
You can not please everyone, someone will always bitch, but thats business i guess.

Mad Men

Mad Men

How about Graham Nattress figures out a way to let me use my iPod touch as the LCD?

You are mad, but I like the way you think.

"Flip" LCD is not important, as I always use external monitor. Even the highest quality "flip" LCD will not match quality of a good external monitor (7"+)

You are mad and strange. What is the point of buying a pocket cam if you are going to use a 7'" LCD? WTF?

You are mad and unrealistic. If you only have $5000, how are you going to afford the equipment to record and edit RAW data. Get real.

Some people have champagne tastes on a beer budget. If you want a Red One, go get a loan and get in line for One. Scarlet is not a mini Red One. You guys asking for a mini Red One that can do RAW, etc. are driving me mad!

please dont put words in my mouth, i never said $5000 is all i got, but if scarlet is going for that market its gotta be priced between 5 and 10 thousand. Thats 5 thousand possibly for the body and maybe 2-4 thousand for other accessories. from a business point of view, some people can only afford say an HVX, thats $6000 not $30,000 which would be the cost of an equipped red one.

And im being Realistic about the Raw option at low a low price, you can record to CF or an external drive, yes storage will cost money so i never ignored all the extras. Any camera you buy you probably will compliment with adaptors, tripods, cages etc.

staying on topic, i think some red users are sensitive or scared of scarlet when it was made clear its not competition, so why the heck worry about it. Whatever it is, scarlet is gonna smoke some other competition.
Like Jim mentioned something like this comes every quarter of a century, that 25 years eh:w00t:

RED is not about to release a "handycam"

Dear Eugene, the point of buying a "pocket cam" and to use 7" LCD is very simple: RED is clearly focused on FILMMAKING (be it independent or studio projects, shorts or feature-length, but definitely FILM). They are not about to release "handycam" that will fit in your pocket and serve to home-video market. THEY ARE going to release SMALL ("pocket") camera targeted at independent filmmakers who would otherwise use something like HV20 or HVX300. Every filmmaker has its own accessory list they need based on what they are filming (nature docos, action feature, drama, TVCs, etc...) - therefore its gotta be MODULAR. It gotta be at least HD (but most likely 2K) and will almost certainly NOT INCLUDE FIXED LENS to keep it small and affordable, while giving the indies freedom to use the glass they have. Which almost certainly mean exchangeable lens mounts...

My suggestion on leaving out build-in LCD is therefore logical...

And Your comments about "champagne tastes on a beer budget" are way out of place. Just few years ago if You have mentioned RED-style camera (4K RAW, digital, VFR, etc...) at bellow 25K - people would tell You the same - yet look now!!!

Asking for 2K compact version of RED ONE for about 5K for the body is what majority on this forum is looking for - therefore most likely what we are going to get...

You go and enjoy your "Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1990, Millenium 2000, Methuselah (6L) $17,625 champagne" in Your 30-year old Rolls Royce driving to Your favorite cigar-bar...

PS: People go and buy HV20 and then put on all sorts of 35mm DOF adapters, matte boxes and tons of other accessories that turns the little and affordable HV20 into a serious piece of gear to achieve their artistic visions on their "beer budget" making the final setup 2-3 times the size of the HV20, but clearly You are missing the point...

Apples and Oranges

Apples and Oranges

Just one more thought...

Releasing a "compact" 2K version of the RED ONE will make perfect sense as it will be clearly directed to the "beer budget" independent crowd, therefore not infringing (too much) on RED ONE sales... Think of it as MacBook vs 17" MacBook Pro - they are pretty much the same thing and both can handle FCP, but is the MacBook replacement of the 17" MacBook Pro?
There will still be plenty of users buying the 17" MBP, people who wants the extra grunts, the ability to process RT HD (vs RT SD with MB) - just like a small 2K Scarlet and the big-brother 4K RED ONE.

For the same reason I don't think it will have the same 4K chip as RED ONE - that will make it 17" MB vs 17" MBP. It will most certainly be 2K to separate the markets...

There is definitely (HUGE) market for both...

Besides - even the "champagne budget" market will benefit from 2K Scarlet as a B-CAM, crash CAM, car-mounted / heli-gyro-stabilized or any other speciality CAM use, not to mention underwater housings, etc...

MOST IMPORTANTLY (to Eugene):

Please pay respect to the person who started this thread - he asked for peoples opinion on the top-5 most wanted features. If You want to post Yours - You are most welcome, otherwise start Your own thread "Beer vs Champagne budgets" and leave us alone...

1. Low noise (or high ISO)

2. Shallow DOF

3. High dynamic range

4. Avilable price (below 10K)

5. Complete package (Lens, storage, good monitor)

Since it's fair to assume Redcode Raw, onboard CF recording and a decent display:

1. 2K from higher res sensor with low noise
2. Practical focusing and audio control
3. Sleep/standby mode with fast switching on
4. Built in ND's
5. Onboard basic clip management with thumbnail gallery

1. $2,000 USD.
2. 2K RAW from 1 to 120fps (with Integrated Intervalometer) to CF Card.
3. 18-85mm zoom (s16 DOF) all manual focus
4. Weather-Resistant
5. Heavy! Heavy! Heavy! 5 pounds at least. (Heavy=Steady)

Aside from being way off base on the weight aspect, I've given this some serious consideration. I stand by my earlier prediction but would like to add these improvements:

1. Mounting Points all over the body. (Loops and threaded holes)

2. MODULAR* built-in auto-focus zoom with DEEP DOF.
*Which can be replaced with a Nikon or Canon DSLR lens mount for manual or shallow DOF.

3. 2K for $2K (Just too good a headline to ignore) with a deep, specialized array of accessories from specialized mounts to crash housings.

4. High Survivability (Strap that sucker to the bumper of a Hummer and do the Baja 1000 or the Green Zone: Dirt, Saltwater, Impact, Temperature)

5. Night Vision. (I.R. or Starlight.)

6. Scary. (This camera can shoot in a war zone and if needed, can be used as a weapon - picture TEX with 'Roid Rage)

7. Comes in Flat Black (Parkerized), Olive Drab, Desert Tan and standard Gunmetal.

8. A website with pictures describing "... And this is what's left of our Scarlet." stories.

9. "You can't take this on the plane, sir."

10. The only camera that when you shoot with it, sometimes people shoot back.

11. A Surgeon tells you: " We had to leave the rest of your Scarlet in there. It was too close to a vital organ for us to risk getting it out. We did however download your shot and it's fantastic."

12. Too cold to shoot? Stick it in a microwave.

HV20 Sized camera body with manual controls and CF reader.

Variable Frames up to 120 fps. Timelapse. Phantom Powered XLR inputs.

Option for viewfinder or LCD.

Variety of mounting options, Handle on top, pistol grip, sholder mount or clamps for lock-downs

RAW format with HD/SD monitoring out.
