  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

1. S16-sized Sensor. + 2.5-2.7K Resolution, so that we can get clean 4:4:4 2K via downsampling.
2. RAW + compatibility with RedCine.
3. CF Cards.
4. No in-camera sharpening.
5. Under 10k $, or at least ~ 10k $.

I thought it might be good for RED to see what users really want in a simple to the point and concise thread that lists users top 5 requirements.

If you want to contribute (please do), please just keep the noise down and the count to 5. Yes I know you want to list more. So did I.

Mine...

1. S16 sized sensor at a minimum that does 1080p to 2k at up to 120fps. Over and undercranking please.
2. Interchangeable lens mount.
3. RAW format
4. Solid state memory. Keep the CF's rollin baby.
5. High quality, high res and decently big built-in LCD. Something that's worth while.

I was gonna list but this is it, right here. I would be satisfied with 1080P and a great low-light image.

First, I want to thank the man and the team who thought out this revolutionary masterpiece for us all.
Now the annoncement of SCARLET really catch attention and infuse hope to the rest of us who are still saving to get the RED ONE, so I'm confident the Red team will work the magic again to give us specs ranging from:
1) Super16 Sensor ,720p24/25 1080p24 to 2k raw, Variable Frame Rate of up to 120fps
2) Fixed zoom lense (ie)Scarlet 17x7, XLR Audio In, HD SDI Out, Compacted on camera body cradle ready to receive the battery and View Finder
3) Genlockable, CF Recording, Variable apperture, On camera electronic CT filters.
4) Pretty good price for Indies pocket
5) For the rest, I'm sure the men at the RedCamera have pretty well a good idea of what they want to do.

Scarlet the professional pocket camera (now open for endless speculation)

1# I keep wonder what pocket we are considering here ... shirt pocket, pants pocket, big coat pocket ... this really does make a difference. For my intended uses, smaller and lighter is always better, however there is a lot to fit into a compact package; so a camera at least 1/3 the size and weight of the RED ONE without losing any professional image quality would satisfy me.

#2 At least 2K please. 1080 is currently the industry standard, so this is the baseline for a professional camera. Variable frame rate with over and undercranking. Although it would be a shame to loose the 4K "Ultra HD" that RED is basing their revolution upon, I wonder if they can put the Mysterium™ sensor in a smaller body - if they pull this off then they certain to cement their mythic status - but my guess is that they will have to downsize the chip. They will sell even more of this mid-level camera than they will of the highest end RED ONE.

#3 Taking the images to a flash device is vital. A compact flash card as the standard is excellent, with the option to go to a flash drive as needed. I have no idea exactly how much space and weight this requires compared to a tape record device, but I would think that it is a significant difference. Besides tapeless is the new standard, why go back.

#4 The ability to mount interchangeable lens must be retained. Exactly which mount should be included on Scarlet will be subject to endless speculation and debate, but choice of lenses is one of the most important dividing line between "professional" and "prosumer" and is what RED has to offer above the type of camera in the Sony EX1 class. Maybe a basic zoom lens could be sold with the camera, but still interchangeable.

#5 Audio capacity w/ XLR i/o on board. I believe that the people this camera is being designed for will want professional audio quality without much fuss. However, I might be willing to drop this if necessary for size and weight consideration and then would record audio to DAT separately if I had to.

#6 I am adding one more to say that the RED philosophy of modular systems is brilliant. IMO, this is one of the most significant innovation RED has to offer. This needs to be retained and even expanded with Scarlet. I like the idea of mounting points on all four sides to facilitate extreme creativity options. The monitor needs a port and a mount, but should be removable, etc.

(oh yes, the same hot/cold range as RED ONE)

I could do with out a lot of bells and whistles to get these features, and I would love it if it was in the $5000 to $7000 range, but I think that if all these features were included in a complete package, then I would probably pay more for it ... up around $15,000.

1. Low light killer (come on guys! I believe in Scarlet for noiseless candlelight shooting)
2. On board LCD and Viewfinder
3. Zoom lens with interchangeable mount like JVC
4. 2K Raw
5. Under $8K so I can do multicam

I have a feeling most of the stuff like CF card recording, variable framerates, Red Cine, etc. will be standard.

1. S16-sized Sensor (1080p/2K)
2. RAW + compatibility with RedCine.
3. CF Cards.
4. price round 10k $
5. interchangeable lenses

1) 4K Redcode Raw (Full 35mm Mysterium Sensor)
2) Changeable lenses
3) Variable Framerate up to 60fps 4K, 120fps 2K)
4) On-board HD LCD/Viewfinder
5) Dual CF Card Slot

Asking a lot, but Sony will not be far behind, and Scarlet must be as revolutionary as RED ONE if it expects to compete with that Market.

The Sony EX1 kicks so much a$$ right now I'm not sure what RED is planning on at what price but I'm pretty curious to hear. Unless RED can make a smaller EX-1 with an even better codec for a lower price... that would be scary. If Scarlet has 35mm DOF I'd sell my RED. Not sure who'd buy it at that point. I'm just trying to figure out what hole RED thinks they're going to fill with Scarlet... unless it's very small size with superior quality. That makes sense. Crash cam.

Good idea Gene, here's my two cents - basically I'd love Scarlet to be a digital equivalent of the Aaton A-Minima. That is: a compact (but not 'tiny'), robust camera that shoots digital footage equivalent to s16mm film.

So my top five are:

1. Interchangeable lens mounts (I'd really like to be able to use my Nikon glass)
2. CF card recording (ideally with multiple CF slots)
3. Shooting format: 2K Redcode RAW (i.e. s16mm equivalent quality)
4. Variable framerates (up to 60fps would be nice, 100fps would be wonderful)
5. A built-in EVF would also be great

Pretty similar to Gene's list I guess. If Scarlet can come out something like this count me in. Heck I'd probably buy two.

Having a body size similar to the Aaton A-Minima with these ideal features you listed would be an easy sell IMO. Only problem though, the word pocket has been thrown around. I think we're going to see something similar to the Iconix camera.

1. 2K sensor >>> 1080p, 720p and SD recording

2. Variable frame rates, from 1 to 120 in 1080p, 1 to 240 in 720p and 1 to 480 in SD

3. 20x full manual Red Lens with interchangeable mount for SLR and B4 (with the best low light capabilities on the Market and built-in stabilizer)

4. REDCODE RAW to CF cards (dual, or quad CF-slot - hot swappable!)

5. Cool menu features (filmlike-gamma, fast filehandling, etc.)

+ Bigger software-palette (Adobe examle) :weight_lift:

Only for 4999$

seems like everyone wants an interchangeable lens mount, but interchangeable lenses seem antithetical to the "pocket" designation. the lenses alone fill a pocket...that keeps me scratching my head, guess we will see, when the prototype appears in 4 1/2 months...

Even then, the prototype wont look anything like the final product. Remember when RED ONE was in a little silver box...

1.CineformRAW
2.Dual slots for CF or SD Cards
3.3D compatible (similar to NuView sync) 720p120 (better 2K 120fps)
4. 2/3" sensor and changeable lenses
5. HMD 3D 1280x720 as VF similar to PlayHead.

since RED is built on 4K 24p PL mount format, they should continue the same format in any new product also.

I don't think a single 2K chip would cut it, when 3-chip HD cameras abound. You wouldn't even be getting 1920x1080's worth of res. The little Iconix is 3-chip (although I haven't seen its image).

1. 2k RAW at 120fps
2. arround 5k USD
3. interchangeable Lens
4. remote Controllable for multicam/FX uses (via USB? on a MAC)
5. CF Card recording

I agree - much of these wish list are not for a small camera. And the Sony EX-1 has set the bar on price performance. If Red wants to create a revolution in this market, they've got their work cut out. The HV20 with can now be had for $600 if you shop around, so to make an impact camera, either it will need to be 4K at the EX-1 street price by the time it ships or 2K for at least half the price.

Otherwise, it's not that much to get excited about since most of the top 5 features are already available or coming soon. My top 5 is probably a little different as I want a real revolution.

(1) Price $2500
(2) Fixed lens with both full manual for all functions with instant AF function
(3) Open, cross-platform codec widely supported on NLEs recorded to cheap archival media - miniblu-ray or something - Red can develop it - that would be real revolution. Shoot it & put it on the shelf.
(4) Pro audio with 4 channels of uncompressed 96/24 bit audio (you can get these interfaces for $100 now, so it can be done
(5) No external monitor needed. LCD/EVF and/or focusing/image tech must be good enough so that focus, color etc. can be judged without hauling HD monitors and DITs around.

If the cam can shoot 4K, okay maybe price would be $5000. But if I can shoot 1080p 24p on an HV20 to tape for $700 or less, Scarlet can't cost 10 times more.

There's one reason the DVX and now HV20 are the zero-budget camera of choice. Price for a 24p cam.

My interest in Red One dissipated the day price was announced.

Having a body size similar to the Aaton A-Minima with these ideal features you listed would be an easy sell IMO. Only problem though, the word pocket has been thrown around. I think we're going to see something similar to the Iconix camera.

Yeah, the word "pocket" has had the SI-2K Mini in my mind. It seems likely that Scarlet will be a head that can be used with some kind of outboard DVR. Or maybe the big innovation will be that they've figured out a way to include some kind of recorder in a very small form factor.

FWIW, I'd love to find out that they were actually releasing something closer to an A-Minima in form factor. The Sony PMW-EX1 is a really nice little camera, but even it's a little tubby and clumsy. An ideally ergonomic little camera that can shoot in some flavor of RedCode RAW would be a huge deal. Still, I kind of expect it to be a head only, which will be killer for the motion control guys.
