  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LIST of Lens Sets that cover 6k

Yup.
A bit surprised to see the standards and supers on this list...

Well Gunleik, I'm no expert at this point as you know. Glad to take input, help me revise it.

Ryan,

Zeiss Contax?

Sold my ZF and went Contax... for the warmth, the kindness to skin, the larger focus barrel, and pure old school feel.

ZF is great if you want stark, hyperreal photographic images / if you hate veiling flare and shoot right into lights a lot.

Contax is great if you want images with a bit less contrast but a lot more texture.

Maybe Freddy at Clairmont can help us, I'll give him a shout and report back to you guys.

The only way to accurately test coverage of a lens (and its defects/distortions when used on a larger than intended sensor size) is to throw it on a lens test projector. It is a $15K+ investment to buy the cheapest (Century) and that is just for one mount. Add about $2K per additional mount (such as FD, BNCR, Arri Standard, etc...)

Ryan,

The Contax is which lens exactly?

Will, Contax Zeiss lenses are the PREDECESSORS to Zeiss ZF/ZE/CP2.

They were the ORIGINAL DESIGNS for those lenses, and were first created in the mid 70's, at the same time as SUPER SPEEDS, STANDARDS, and HASSELBLADS. All of these lens sets share a very similar Zeiss T* coating from that era, and have very similar looks.

Contax Zeiss are interesting because they also cover a FULL FRAME (think 5D) image circle. But have a very similar "look" to Super Speeds.

Think of them as ZF/ZE's with a "Super Speed" coating. That's why so many of us are obsessed with them. They will easily cover Dragon at 6k, and will presumably cover the sensor AFTER that as well.

Of course Zeiss has gone and revised many of these designs (35 f2, 50 f2, etc)...but the original Contax lineup is still FANTASTIC. They competed head to head with Leica R, and were sold from 1974 to 2004. In 2005, Zeiss "re-issued" them as ZF/ZE's with brand new coatings that gave them a new, more "modern" look.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge Nick, if you can think of any additional lenses that for sure will do 6k please help me add them to the list.

All FULL FRAME stills glass. Off the top of my head, great candidates are:

1) Leica R
2) Zeiss ZE/ZF/CP2
3) Zeiss Contax
4) Canon L Series
5) Canon FD
6) Nikon G
7) Nikon AIS
8) Minolta Rokkor

MEDIUM FORMAT lenses are overkill, but obviously cover as well:

1) Hassleblad
2) Mamiya
3) Contax 645
4) Pentacon Six lenses

(Note: a bunch of this type of glass has been PANAVISED recently for 65MM & 70MM films such as The Dark Knight Rises and The Master)

As far as CINEMA GLASS, the best set truly with the largest image circle right now that I know of are K35's. They were designed with a FULL FRAME (ie stills) image circle, so will cover 6K with ease. All the other sets of Cinema Glass were designed with a S35mm image circle in mind, and Dragon 6K is stepping outside of that. So it's a brave new world. That's who so many of us are taking refuge in stills glass.

updated.

If there is anything that needs to be taken off, please notify.

Not correct. DOF will be the same at any given distance no matter what the sensor size (other things being equal).

Wise were the ones who bought legacy SLR lenses before mirrorless cameras became popular!

I don't think that's perfectly true, as sensor size and delivery screen size (you might call it enlargement from capture to projection) get into the calculation of the CoC, which is important for the calculation of the DOF. That's why the CoC on S16 for blow up to 35mm projection was as standard 1/2000 inch where shooting S35 for 35mm projection use 1/1000 inch. So in other words, it is the opposite the smaller the sensor the smaller the DOF for the exact same lens, which of course won't give you the same FOV on both sensor/film.... that's why it is commonly say that bigger sensor have smaller DOF: sure an 85mm on a Sinar has shorter DOF than your 5mm lens on dv cam.

I forgot about that! I think you're right, too. Details, details.

What does anybody think of using the Contax Zeiss 645 lenses for the Dragon sensor? I have been toying around with the idea of gathering some of those lenses and testing them.

Hi,
I got the lenses listed here.
I just wondering this lenses cover 6K?

Hi guys,
Apologies, I must have missed the announcement.
When did Red confirm the size of the Dragon sensor?
Cheers,
Harry

Yes they are Contax Full Frame primes. They cover 5D/Full frame sensor. WAY BEYOND 6K. You're set.

Never mind, I found it:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?77169-Dragon/page9&
Is that confirmed? 30x15.8?
I think it's kind of a shame that Red keeps choosing oddball sizes. At some point, lensing will be more important to many cinematographers than pixel peeping. I almost bought the upgraded version of the 17-80 (19.4-95) Optimo. But it felt like an oddball lens. Maybe not super rentable in my world. I passed. That was to cover MX 5K. Would that $70,000 lens have covered Dragon, or would I have felt burned by Red? Who knows... but if they keep going, what's next? 8K at 33x18? Soon they will make a camera that no professional cinema lenses will cover. I, for one, will move on at that point.
But I am curious and interested in Dragon. Maybe I'll do it for one camera and leave the other 5K so there are options.
Interesting times, as many have pointed out here...
Cheers,
Harry

I agree, why not focus on things that really matter...workflow, color rendering, dynamic range, global shutter. Why make some oddball sensor size that peoples really really expensive lenses wont work with? If Red's strategy is just to keep saying 'ours is bigger than yours' then they wont last.
