Now that 3rd party power options are becoming available from companies like Viewfactor, it might be useful to have a list of batteries that current epic/scarlet owners have tested or used successfully or unsuccessfully. If you have any experience with a particular model, list it below.

This could be useful for anyone building a Red kit.

Example:

Red Brick - Viewfactor APU-IDX mount - WORKS ON EPIC

I second that :) Would be very helpful. There are a few threads that have some info on this, but no concrete list.

I'm also interested in availability of V-mount vs. AB from rental houses or even local vendors, especially outside the US. Any input from folks outside the US would be appreciated!

Been looking a bit at batteries. Seems the Anton Bauer batteries (as well as the charger) are more expensive than all or almost all equivalent V-mount battery options. For the same watt hours and expected run-time, it looks like anywhere from 25-50% more cost for AB than V-mount.

Anyone know why this is? Are the AB batteries just that much better? I'm very much a fan of buying the right thing once, than the wrong thing twice. New to looking at batteries, so any advice is appreciated.

Any one work with this Batt on any red camera? HyTRON 50 It says NA on the AB website and that means they don't recommend it but it has the Volts to do it.. Just want to see if any one tired it?

Im pretty sure most anything that is the correct mount will work, surely?

Would love to confirm this as well. I was going to buy some smaller v mount batteries for travel but someone on the forum told me they wouldnt work. Surely they would with the correct voltage right?

The reason I'm looking for a conclusive list is that many manufacturers sell RED-specific batteries, but they often have identical specs to the others. Makes you wonder about the compatibility of the rest.

The HyTRON 50 is NiMh. Lithium Ion seems to be preferred as they are much lighter than NiMh for equivalent power output and capacity.

I believe RED-specific 3rd party batteries just means that they transmit battery info to the camera like a red brick does. But since the epic/scarlet has a voltage readout, that battery info isn't as important anymore. Also, the viewfactor plates don't transmit battery info anyways, so even a red brick attached to a APU-IDX would only be read as voltage.

I understand the weight of Lithium Ion is lighter but will the Hytron 50 which is pretty light over all and small work with out issues?
Thanks

Hytrons would probably work with the reduced loads of an epic/scarlet, but I wouldn't waste the money on AB batteries. They are by no means better than anyone elses, and in many circumstances worse. Anton bauer sells a billion batteries to TV news and I don't think they really give a shit about individual customers. Their batteries are the most expensive, and they won't recell them. I have owned over 20 AB batteries and they all failed at one point or another. AB stance is that I didn't use them properly. By that, they meant I didn't use them on a Camcorder like a Varicam or a betacam. My current AB mount batteries are cheap and bullet proof. I had one failure out of 26, and they have been around the world and have powered the d-20, reds, panavisions and arris (those are all things AB siad I shouldn't do with their batts).

Well now I'm curious - what are your current AB mount batteries, Nick?

Oh yeah, I forgot that part. Google Product ID : VSN092 or just the number. They are no brand Chinese batts made with Japanese cells. A bunch of companies buy them, put their stickers on them and double the price. If you do a little research you can find them in V mount as well. They work with Varizoom, and other cheap chargers.

Here's just one of many links -

No, very smart question, and the answer is no. They put all the smart stuff in the battery, so you can use really cheap chargers, but AB chargers only charge AB batts.

Both these work well, but the flat style can be finicky, about the same as the actual AB chargers. The swit or varizoom ones are more reliable. They all charge the bats, you just might have to reset the finicky one.
