  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lexar 16GB card fast enough?

... and everyone kept promising us a 16 that would work every few weeks.

So we can tell Erik at Birger he's not the only one.

I've been testing every > 8GB card for the last year. Every single one, including many unreleased versions.

To simplify it, sometimes people switch to MLC to get 16GB or they have
to double stack the memory or their controller just wasn't designed to get full speeds from > 8 GB (releated to how the memory gets accesed).

Seriously, if it was as trivial as people suggest, we'd have done 9 months ago when we first started seeing 16GB cards that claimed to be 300x.
Thanks for the answer and explanation, Deanan.

So what are RED's plans regarding flash storage? In the beginning there were talks about offering CF, express card and SSD options. A year ago 8GB was okay but now several companies are offering fast 64GB+ SSD's and one camera manufacturer has announced a 80GB 240MB/s flash drive.

I would be very disappointed if RED would just stick to the plan and deliver a (very late) 16GB and a very expensive 64GB option.

100Gb

100Gb

Wow...100Gb...nice. 48+ mins of footage on one card. 4K/24p.
That would be great.

RED RAM (SSD storage) should start shipping next month (October). It will be 128GB in capacity and should be very fast. The 80GB SSD you mention was actually announced early this year, before NAB, then the announcement materialized again at IBC, as if it were something new. Big difference between announcing a product and actually shipping a product.

16GB cards will begin shipping out once RED can deliver the new CF module needed for them. It's a free upgrade on your first order of 16GB cards. We should see more of these real soon.

Since no FLASH manufacturer has stepped up and provided media that's fast enough, RED is doing it on their own. I don't expect them to start offering other form factors like ExpressCard anytime soon. I suppose if someone started making ExpressCard SSDs that had the right combination of capacity and speed, it would be worth it to RED to investigate them as an option. ExpressCard would make a nice interface for the media, they would be a little larger in a physical sense and could be easier to handle vs. CF. But I don't see ExpressCard actually offering any real advantage beyond the physical packaging at this point. Sure the interface is a lot faster, but current FLASH media isn't exactly stressing the capabilities of CF anyway and we have the SATA-based C.FAST revision to the CF standard coming within the next 10-18 months.

Sure, let's wait and see. But I'd say if RED is the standard for announcing/shipping then they still have some time to go

Anyway, my point is: I understand what RED is offering at the moment and what is coming soon. I just doesn't sound like the company it wanted to be a year ago - offering revolutionary products at a revolutionary price. What happened to the days when we would laugh at P2 cards?

Lexar 16 GB RED COMPATIBLE

Lexar 16 GB RED COMPATIBLE

Hi!. I tested today the Lexar 16Gb with Beta17 and it work, but it dropped frames. Like the lexar 8GB it can record up to 4k 16/9 REDCODE 28. But it's slow for REDCODE 36.
I will make more tests, but at this time, the Lexar 16 GB dropped some frames... maybe it can be my unit... i have only one at this moment... maybe my cam... i don't know... because i received today my first cards... and i don't have the red drive yet.

First Test:
0:00 to 9:32 Perfect
9:32 to 9:36 Droped frames
9:36 to 11:36 Perfect

lexar 16Gb test

lexar 16Gb test

2º Test... The test is the camera recording a lcd screen with movements, i think this is the high mbps that i can get. (in my first test the max record time was 11:30, now only 8:04 with the same preferences)

A. 4k HD 25FPS RC28 MAX Record Time = 8:04
0:00 - 5:00 Perfect
5:00 Drop, 5:16 Drop, 5:35 Drop, 5:55 Drop, 6:56 Drop
7:00 - 8:04 Perfect
B. 4k 2:1 25FPS RC36 MAX Record Time = 8:09
0:00 - 4:30 Perfect
4:30----- Drops
C. 4k 2:1 25FPS RC28 MAX Record Time = 9:06
0:00 - 9:06 Perfect (Aparently)
D. 4k 2:1 24FPS RC36 MAX Record Time = 8:22
0:00 - 8:22 Perfect (Aparently)

I think that we can work with the lexar cards, but only with some modes... i don't know if the problem is the card or the CF recording drive... maybe with the new the problems can dissapear.
