  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

I paid my $795 last week. What happens now?

Fella'
Consider yourself lucky (lol),
let this team discus and improve. I certainly believe together we can build this gimbal for ever.

Anyone considering the CAME/LIANG steadycam to accompany Helix?
Nick,
I have Came/Liang unit, once we get Helix, please come by we can test together

with out me reading 65 pages of this thread....

If i buy the 4 axis version can it be dumbed down to both a 3 axis and a single axis also? Im sure the single axis is more than enough for my steadicam but i wouldn't mind paying extra for the 4 axis and having this ability

Yes!

You may end up throwing out your sled!

That video is what excited me about the helix. I would never throw my sled out as it will probably be the easiest way to use this thing. I have years of experience with Steadicam and I always wanted an AR revolution and this combo looks better.

You need 6 parameters to describe an objects position and orientation: distance in X, Y and Z positions and rotation about X, Y and Z axis.

So the "4th Axis" is simply a way to mount Helix on a steadicam or crane/jib and by doing so you take out the unstabilized up/down Y position that results
from handholding the 3 axis "gimbals". Because your arm's elbow joint has much less stability as compared to the steadicam arm joint or the
totally straight arm of the crane/jib. Technically guess you could think of a locked down tripod as the ultimate 6 axis stabilization..hehe..but it's not moving so
there is no stabilization compensation going on..it is just a totally stable situation..a totally inert object.

Surprised the 4th axis was $900 thought it might be more in $600 range but all metals are very expensive not just gold and silver..that's why we recycle aluminum.

I get it. When I read 4th Axis, I thought they were referring to a built in active axis like the other three, not my arms or a crane, etc. Eitherway, I think this is a must have and should be just part of the standard kit. I can't imagining shelling out however much it's going to be without a mounting option.

Ned - the whole system is modular so the amount you choose to "shell out" is completely up to you. Some folks just want the one axis system to put on the sled of a steadicam for horizon stabilization. Meanwhile, you can use the 3-axis system without support for some shots as it only weighs 5 pounds, no 4th axis needed. Finally, you can choose to shoot very long, very active shots with the stabilization and support provided by putting the 4th axis frame on to the pin of a steadicam arm. Or the 4th axis frame can act as a handle for overhead shots or to help in mounting to a crane platform. No one setup is best for all shots, hence you can purchase what you want, when you need/want it.

As for the "standard kit," you can think of it as all 4 axes for the full amount (around $4900, I think). Or, you can choose the 1, 2, or 3 axis models as a way to buy into the system in smaller increments; buying the additional axes as you need them. The group buy structure allows you to choose.

Nato rail for Helix

Elizabeth, happy? Added couple of 1/4-20 on the frames too (one on each side).

I will blame the continuing weight gain of the Helix solely on the RU's

Hien... Your level of commitment to the project, and exemplary communication make it ever harder to get in to any other system... Well done!!

Thanks Ketch.

As for the power, I am making a similar box as the one on the camera side, but this one will only have 2 2pin Lemo's instead. It will be mount upside down, symmetrical with the original box. The power cable is more than capable of spitting to this box. Total, it will give you 3 power outputs on camera side. Should be enough for camera, Remote FF, and one more thing. Beyond that, you are on your own. LOL
