  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

my head hurt. not another gimbal.

No...actually this is NOT a gimbal. It is stabilization system.

But some people may be surprised to find out later when they look into getting a copter/rotor
to lift their big..carbon tube gimbals that it will cost a $15-$20,000 copter/rotor to get those things airborne.

Bob,

Could you be so kind and make a little review of the RT? I know that you did upload a quick video, but it was more talk about that wireless system you have. I want to see the RT in action. :)

Cheers,

John

Hmmm. Ok!

Also, how much interest would there be in some kind of option or addon, perhaps even a "special RED edition" Helix, that incorporated a Lemo on the back panel and on the camera platform (fed through the slip ring) to permit use of the RED touchscreen on the left handle of the gimbal,

Nirvana would be to have a lemo port for Red Touch, no?

dude...that would be awesome!

So that's three who have weighed in on the desirability of a Lemo interface on camera platform and back of the Helix with wires fed through the slip ring so that the RED touchscreen can be used off payload. Letus is talking about sweeteners for RED users. How many would want to push for this?

I will strongly reiterate my support for this and - hate to say it - would pay extra if it were an option. :-)

Don't think are close to numbers for a special RED edition to be made Letus. But I am not Letus.
Realistically seems like they need to sell thousands of these for all kinds of cameras.

Look at it like this..the DJI Ronin group buy needs to offer a 20% discount just to equal the pricing of the 3 axis model.
And I think 20% discount on brand new in demand model is impossible.

Yes..to the above and will the units be able to be shipped with the custom case. This is an unusual shaped item so it needs a custom cut case.
Plus everytime someone packs up their 1 or 3 axis system the empty slots are a constant reminder to acquire those missing pieces...hehe..sublimal marketing.

Truth be told, this actually does happen to me; I hate to have empty slots in my custom cases... feels like something is missing.

What is the power spec of the RED touchscreen?

Of Course it does Terry..human beings have the squirrel gene..they like to collect. George Lucas made his fortune off of Star Wars figures rather than ticket sales.

Seems like it would depend on the alterations needed. As Elizabeth has suggested, maybe it's just a different Lemo plug for RED cameras. Running a hundred or so of those through a batch of assembly wouldn't require a massive retooling or such. They have already said the SDI plug could be replaced by a power plug as an option. This shouldn't be any more difficult I'd think.

And, I actually think there could be quite a big interest in this before it is over.

I didn't want to trash the hotshoe for those who mount monitors or other accessories that way, but I have little use for it either. What I'd most like to see is swat rail functionality somewhere on the non-moving back end, but as long as there's a flat surface 70mm wide somewhere with tapped holes, I can just attach a rail myself. I use the RED Sliding Top Handle and also have my RED Touch LCD on a swat rail clamp for quick mounting, and I know a lot of other RED users use handles with swat rail dovetail clamps built in. So maybe a show of hands for anyone who'd like to be able to repurpose their existing sliding handles onto a swat rail on the Helix, either for a centered handle on the three axis version that attaches to the stationary parts of the skeleton and/or for the U frame that is part of the 4th axis. Also would love to hear what ideas Letus and others may have for a quick release solution to interface the 4th axis with a crane.

Followed by Hein's response:

Hotshoe was mounted to the back by 1/4-20, so if you don't want to use it, just remove it and underneath is the 1/4-20.

I'll second Elizabeth's post - a SWAT rail is an excellent approach. Good thinking.

The problem with only one 1/4-20 is that a SWAT rail wants two mounting points. A single will likely introduce slipping under load.
Makes perfect sense to have two.

Though I won't be part of the initial buy, introducing this feature into the design will add this into the "to buy" list.

Awesome!!! :)

John, I'm not sure that "OK" was an agreement from Bob to do it. Putting together a little demo isn't always so little in terms of available time and effort. Maybe he meant he would do it. I interpreted it as, "That was a somewhat presumptuous request but whatever..." I'm not trying to put words in his mouth, but it is at least important to realize that fellow professionals don't always just have free time to do us favors. Whenever I write a reduser, I try to always say, "No problem if you don't have time."

Just something to think about.

One 1/4-20 with a curved surface would count as 2 mounting points. It's going no where

You are absolutely right of course.

I should have added that under no circumstances should he feel pressured to do so.

I just interpreted his: ok!, as he actually would like to do it and perhaps even found it fun to educate fellow RU. :)

Guys quit with the thumb control posts. Make another thread.
It is rude when people are communicating with Letus directly here on Letus Gimbal thread.

Just a word of caution, I have a friend here in town who's had to send one of these back 2 times now in a short period of time because of problems it developed. Might just be unlucky, but it's worth taking a look around.

You guys are great. Much appreciated what you're doing here.

We just sent our for repair after just a few uses...and no it was not user error....
