  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Constantine, I see that you want to be critical at a design. But there are 1001 other things you CAN do with the Helix. I don't see why you would keep bringing the Jib thing up.
It's not that you would get 360 panning from a Gravity One on a Jib ;)

hey man Im not being critical , I thought it was mentioned that it will work well on jibs and drones, and I just asked how this would work well. As about the G1E it will do 360 pans on a jib, the G1 is for a different purpose , and not jibs, however the G1E can do this, it deals with twice the size cameras as a bare Epic and certainly not for drones hehe Iam very precise on my comments and they are just educational. The G1E wont be revealed before IBC 2014 so if you want to talk about its abilities you will need to wait until you see it first , then come and ask and I will answer, on a different thread not the Letus thread

I was keep asking about the jib, because , there is a way round it, and since this is a modular design I though maybe this can also be integrated and solved? wouldnt that be better for the interest customers?

I also said that the letus is a very nice hand held gimbal and I see it can be more functional and friendly than other designs no?

if you find my post in any way miss-informing or misleading, thats not my intention and I apologise.

best regards

I'm in full agreement with Constantine here. I posted all of the same thoughts back on page 8 of this thread.

Everyone look at this http://www.powerpod.co.uk/default.aspx?prod=PP500. Why not just buy that? It's somewhere in the range of $50,000 is why...

I think a big opportunity would be missed if either the accessory arm doesn't have a 4th motor for 360 panning. Or if there's not a way to reconfigure to hang from the side arm/tilt motor, using that motor for panning, the base motor for tilting and the roll motor for rolling. Because as was mentioned, the stabilizing is less needed for crane work. Just the remote pan/tilt/roll ability.

Make sense?

Because as is, while this looks great in so many ways for handheld shooting. Without full movement on a crane, it's less versatile than the Ronin and others. And I'd personally rather buy something that can be used in a few different configurations.

Hey Hien, one more question - does the Helix have a convenient way to suspend from an Easy Rig? For extended operating, could be quite helpful. thx

Hien, would it be possible to 'lock' the 4th axis frame down. (yes I know it defeats the purpose) but we could use it as an extended frame of the handles... Now the bearings make the 4th Axis right?
Yes, you can lock it down so when you do low shots, it will be able to follow tilt and pan.

Loosing a feed in the middle of a shot or worse, frying your camera is of benefit to nobody. That's my personal soapbox position; HDMI has no place on pro gear. Unless I got bad info or my old memory is shot, HDMI was created to carry content and viewer protection protocols. It was designed for the distribution of content and was never even meant for production equipment. Considering all of the flak that Red has endured for some of the more difficult descisions they have made I don't understand why they elected to compromise on this. With all of the shorted out connectors I have read about lately I have to imagine they are regretting that choice.

Despite all you say we you a Parralinx day in, day out, for hundreds of shooting days now with zero issues.

Nick, the fourth axis is for that. You can swing the outermost frame up from Steadicam mode to easy rig mode.

Problem is, Steadicam sleds are longer front-to back, and the mount here must go left-to-right, or else it will be connected with just one flimsy screw, and hang off the sides.

The mounting plate should also run front to back, not only left to right, or there will not be enough stability, and too much tension on screws set too close to each other.

It would be fairly easy to just add more mounting surface front to back. (Have you guys actually tried mounting this with an Epic to a real Steadicam?)

OOPS - Edit - I see that the whole handle thing can be detached and that then you can place it properly on a Steadicam, but then you lose tilt stabilization which might be useful on some Steadicam shots.

There just needs to be an L bracket that extends up the right arm and angles to the left over the camera center, and one that extends up the back and toward the front over camera center where they will meet at a joint. Now if you

turn the camera 90 degrees counterclockwise (from the operator position in the back), you can hang it from what was the right side tilt motor and you've got full pan, tilt and roll with even weight distribution and no additional stress

on the motors. You'd just remove the left arm/handle to give clearance underneath.

There seems to be few people who want his gimbal to be a Swiss army knife and do everything .

Myself I would like it to have a gimballed heated coffee cup holder for those times between takes and you need a caffein hit and can't walk of set .

What about it hienle ; ) !

Any rough idea on timing of availability?

Group buy would also be cool, but the price looks nice already, so either way.

Hey, hienle opened this up for suggestions. Why not try to make this product as versatile as possible? Especially when it's no real added complexity. It's just a couple of metal brackets. Make us happy, and sell hienle lots of units.

This is an annoying comment discouraging people from offering creative suggestions that help both Letus and us. Imagine if Apple thought like you. There would no iPhones that are "Swiss Army knives" as people should just be happy with a phone being a phone, and others should just shut up.

BTW it's spelled 'caffeine'.

It seems like a right angle ball bearing gimbal could be made allowing panning, tilting, and rotation to be done via steadicam just using the hands and without a joystick. But even without this, the design looks sweet.

OK, thought I would have a little sleep. Now, let's get busy. LOL.

Took my 81mg Aspirin, Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg, 1/2 atorvastatin 40mg, diovan 160mg.

OK, let it comes.

Let's start with the coffee.

Is it possible to get just horizon and tilt but no pan axis for stabilization? Using Steadicam, I never need to stabilize the pan axis and wish to keep full hand control - in fact I would like there to be an option of having that axis contain no motor, as on Steadicam it is never needed and direct hand control is far preferable at all times.

Other Steadicam ops please chime in, you will certainly agree with this.

Don't do it Hienie . . . that's what Microsoft did with Word!! Went from fitting on 3 floppy discs to 500GB of shit ;-)

LMAO! I'm having coffee right now and FINALLY getting to really dig into this stuff from the comfort of my office chair and desktop. More soon, but let me just say that I'm in all the way on this product, as is or as it continues to evolve from suggestions here and elsewhere. Fantastic work, Hien.

Zeb, I couldn't find a "Like" button like Facebook. LOL, I've been there. My first system was 25MB, not memory, it's harddisk.

Let's see if there's a config that fit your need.
