  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Constantine - I think I understand what you are saying: with this set-up on a jib, you could either mount from the bottom of the "extra" frame (overslung) or flip it over and hang from it (underslung) but in each case, you would be a bit limited in the tilt (could not go straight up while underslung nor straight down while overslung) and pans would delimited to something less than 180 degrees. Am I getting what you are saying?

My my Kessler Crane I think I could overcome some of the tilt issues but might still have the limits on the pan. As I think about it, would it not work just to mount unit in 3-axis mode if you want to have extended pan capability. (My brain hurts trying to think in 4 axis movements. - lol)

A video showing this thing in action will be worth a 1000 posts to this thread :)

Wasn't the purpose of the whole 3 axis gimbals to NOT bring your jib... (but just a rope and a small ladder) ;)

I dont know if my descriptions in English are good, but I think any jib operator needs at least 360 degrees of motorised pan to have full control of various moves.

that way you can follow your subject panning at any possition. Your gimbal doesnt allow that, the pan angle is limited to maybe 90 degrees , before the lens hit sthe side hamdle, and the additional axis is locked at a fixed position???maybe that is clear now

so you need to motorise that 4th axis my friends, just to have a functional pan for jibs and Iam not sure how you can do this either on the electronic side of things...

How about both the base of the 3rd and 4th axis up and camera base down?

Looks great Hien,

I love the modularity. Personally i'll only be able to afford the 1 axis to start but seeing the capabilities down the road are great. It's not a problem to start with the one axis and then order the rest later right?

I can see myself getting the full three axis with frame for steadicam use down the road. Looks like a great light-weight solution and I still love the optical centered balance approach. Can't wait to grab one of these.

Hien, would it be possible to 'lock' the 4th axis frame down. (yes I know it defeats the purpose) but we could use it as an extended frame of the handles... Now the bearings make the 4th Axis right?

How about both the base of the 3rd and 4th axis up and camera base down?

From my perspective, I think that might solve the panning issue on the jib. I think is is true that you can't have both unlimited panning and unlimited tilt at the same time but I'd consider that a rather slight limitation as, IMO, there aren't many shots that would require such manipulation.

I like the look of this gimbal. :)

First of all, good work Hienle!

I have a question for you. Am I able to comfortably work with the camera in eye level? By the look of it, I seem to be a bit constraint around belly level.

thats not enough, they will need to re position the pan motor to the 4th axis for it to work. If not then its limited and its a very big limitation for jibs because you wont be able to pan more than 80-90 degrees, and believe me when I say its very crucial to be able to do this on jib moves..

Not seeing your point but I'll leave it to others to figure it out for you. I think this will do a great deal of what I want done. YMMV

Terry +1

Constantine, I see that you want to be critical at a design. But there are 1001 other things you CAN do with the Helix. I don't see why you would keep bringing the Jib thing up.
It's not that you would get 360 panning from a Gravity One on a Jib ;)

Someone give Constantine a backrub and a cocktail ;-)

How do you control the roll axis when mounted to a steadicam arm? Do you use a joystick of sorts?

Maybe this image will shed some light...

Hm guys if you dont see what Iam saying then, you are probably working with small short jibs and you just swing the jibs to follow the motion.to compensate for the limited pan angle. Either that or you can relocate the pan motor to the 4th axis and do it as it should be done. Sorry to say, I have build and operated systems and cranes for dozens of years and its more of if you guys understand the importance rather than me understanding if this can work or not. Never the less, nice handheld gimbal , I like it for this purpose. You are welcome to prove my points wrong, and better you are welcome to prove a directors asked move wrong as well, when he askes for moves that you cannot perform, and say different.

nice work and structure

I don't want to belabor this at all... but I can see a way to allow 360 degree panning with this system if you do what Hiene said and raise both the outer axes arms (3rd and 4th) above the camera platform. Now, maybe I am not able to visualize this correctly so, I agree with those who want a video (what a concept for this forum - lol). If you do that, it may be true that your tilt will be limited but, like was said, a video would be worth a thousand posts that are only conjecture.
