  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Helix with 4th axis mounted on Steadicam ProVid arm (circa early 90's model). I haven't got to mounting 1st axis on my sled yet...

hey Paul , you still got one of those provids ? took me back a dozen years.

good to see.

Iam still standing on my current statement that an easyrig+serene+Helix take less operational usefull size(meaning size that can be a problem in action shots) than any direct mounting on any steadicam arm and vest. And at the same time you have the ability to go from high to low shots and back , in one useful fluid transition and full vertical axis stabilization.

I'd like to know what a back doctor would consider less hostile on back health. Easyrig+Serene or a good vest and arm

Hello Alvice. I will give you my opinion on this matter , and it will be as objective and realistic as possible.

Every body structure is different. There are vests out there that can fit and feel very comfortable to some, and do not feel good and comfortable at all to others. And Iam talking about Top vests.

There are people who like WK vests and people who dont and they like Exo vests, others that stick with their old MS vests, and others that love the PRO GPI vests over all the above.

The point is, and you will hear this from any pro steadicam operator, that there is no ideal vest for every body structure and any shooting style.

Its just that , some brands, like WK, PRO-GPI and TIFFEN, have tried and improved this over all those years and are superior to low end brands, that 90% of them try to copy by pictures and havent been in the field for so long.

Now Easyrig, can feel uncomfortable to some , and to some others feel very comfortable.

there are reports , from eng ops that it has saved their back over the years.

I cannot compare it to any of the above vests , because it serves a different purpose, in terms of how it supports the weight and the purpose of it is different, as well as the operating style.

All Iam saying , is , that those manners arent to be taken by advice only, what you should do, is go to your closest distributor of ANY kind of bodymount tyou want to test, and test it, see how it fits on you, and generally feel the total equipment and see if you like it.

You will also need to spent more than 10 minutes doing this to actually have a better opinion, some people just put on a vest, and arm, and just walk for 1 minute, and then they come on board saying , its not good etc. This is not valid.

No matter how much experience you have, and how many years of steadicam operation with a certain kind of brand using it, when you ll try something new , it will need to adjust to your body style, your body has to adjust to it, and learn the different forces applied from it , in possibly different parts of your muscules, and many other factors. So something that feels weird, its not necessarily weird or bad, or the opposite.

As for the back Doctor, there is no BACK DOCTOR that would suggest ANY body mount of any brand, to anyone, because they all abuse more or less certain parts of your body, and if you have a weakness, that you might not know, or you arent trained, you will suffer sooner or later.

Have you seen any anatomic studies coming out from Doctors on this sort of equipment? or even hand held shoulder mounts? I havent and if they are they are close to none.

Because this is a long talk , and have been talked over in the steadicam community for ages,I suggest you go test your equipment , before you buy it, and dont rely on others opinion, not because they can lie to you, but because what is good for them might be not good for your body at all.

just for the record, there are top steadicam ops with Top gear, that they also use easyrig and Serene as we speak.
Peter Barta is one of them, he owns a full Pro-Gpi steadicam rig, and he also owns a Gimbal, why would he just buy easyrig and Serene if it didnt make sense? On the other hand, what might make sense to him , its not 100% that it will make sense to you. Its just a good record of the opinion of someone that works in this field, and it should be considered as information. Then you go test for your self.

please consider those posts as educational and constructive and not an argument. They are not ment for this purpose.

kind regards

I would love to see a video of set-up from start and even addition of the Fourth Axis down to going Single Axis.

Is there a training video online somewhere?

Constantine - As I said, or at least alluded, I am impressed by your enthusiasm for your product. And I don't dispute any of your arguments about its effectiveness. I hope you understand that no product is THE product for everyone. Just like the design of the Ronin/Movi was never going to make it for me, the Easyrig is just not something I want to deploy. I hope you can operate on less than 100% of possible market share because no product is likely to achieve that.

No problem, and thats what I said as well. Not everything is for everyone.

but why do you use the word bait after the word arguments.

In my plain English the word bait is for someone to get tricked and bite the bait right?

is that the case or is it a figure of speech that Iam not aware?

Please clarify because I am not sure what you mean,

There is no bait. Come and test. Pretty simple. Not only I have been objective 100%, I have also told you that there is no product that apply to all.

But about its effectiveness Iam 100% certain. Because I have tested and seen what it can do.

All you need to do now is wait until the end of the month, and then just drop by your local distributor, and test it.

it will be send everywhere. Best way to find out isnt it?

If I misunderstood you I apologise.

Kind regards

Haha - it is supposed to read "about." Nothing negative there. My apologies for sloppy writing. I'll change the original.

Hello,
can someone from Letus give me a little update about my order?, because I haven't hear anything from Letus yet ...I have placed my reservation (Order #33785 - batch #1.5) on Sunday, May 18, 2014... I sent an email, but no answer :-(

Thank you.

hhahaha, you got me there Terry for one minute, lol , no prob thanks for clarifying.

As far as I understand, besides Easyrig and steadicam arm use, the 4th axis also allows the Helix to be mounted on a tripod or a jib arm. Does it mean the Helix can be used as a remote head where the camera operator can pan & tilt the camera via a remote control unit? If so, would the handles on the Helix get in the way and limits the range of panning?

Another potential use that I can imagine is that I can mount the Helix outside of a traveling car (eg. in front of the bumper), and I can pan and tilt via remote control while having the camera stabilized at the same time. Is it something possible with the 4th axis? Is the 4th axis strong enough to be mounted this way?

thanks a lot,

Jack

Looking forward to mounting 4 Axis in these ways also. Curious about weight limit myself...

I am not seeing any close ups of the Fourth Axis so that I can figure other setups.

I would really like to see how this attaches to a steadicam arm.

Eric - here is me (post #1708 in this thread) with the 4th axis mounted on the pin of my steadicam:

It's a little hard to see in the picture but the circular bearing of the 4th axis slips right over the pin of the steadicam arm.

Thanks thats the photo that sold me on the Helix ;)

A close up would be great since there are no photos anywhere on the net that I can find.

Will put up some footage in a bit. Received a new system needs tweaking (the footage will NOT have the tweaked profile)

OK - here is me with 4th axis on arm/vest. Not as clear of a view as one would like but you get the idea.

Looking good, Terry and Paul! Terry, I agree with Hien. From that angle I can hardly tell you're even WEARING a steady vest and arm. If the vest were under a jacket . . . talk about stealth.:-)

We believe you Terry even when you say you were wearing an arm/vest. :)
