  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Eric - The 4th axis is set up like in this picture:

http://letushelix.com/4th-axis-stabilization/

Then, the bearing that you see in the middle of the lower bar is placed on to the pin in the steadicam arm. At that point, the 4th axis can be moved freely on the arm, and rotated via the center bearing, while you still control the pan and tilt in the normal 3rd axis manner. The 4th axis will remove much/all (if you're good!) of the vertical movement of the whole unit.

I may have a photo of me with this set-up. I'll post if I can get ahold of it.

BTW - you didn't hear it from me but I think the clever folks at Letus are looking at a variety of different ways to utilize the 4th axis set-up with other types of vertical stabilizer technology. The one specific one being looked at is the Serene unit that is being promoted elsewhere on RU. (But there are other ideas being floated around, too.)

Hi Terry.

We had a lot of interest from Hien, and already talked about the Serene and Helix combination with easyrig, as he really liked what he has seen so far, and it makes total sense, and Iam gonna say that we are also working together and in parallel to develop also the Puppeteer bracket that will help to connect with the easy rig to allow free tilt on single operator mode,if one doesnt want to use the Helix 4th axis which is also perfect for the job, and a possible quick release (very fast ) connection, so the Helix can be handed from one operator to another where this needed in no time.

Hien is a very innovative guy, and very enthusiastic about his and our development, and this passion together with his excellent support took the Helix to its success. We are hopping to work together on this, as we are also on the same page.

I will state with no doubt, that the Serene and easyrig , is currently the only tool, that can give steadicam frictionless elimination of walking and running, from very slow moves to very fast moves, and also the only tool that can do all this with such smoothness , using also the total range of the easyrig string extension, so you can go from high to low mode , in one fluent and solid transition.

Its also build future proof to support camera and gimbal weights up to 20 kgr and all that tool less adjustable.

Iam planning in sending one to Hien when the first pieces come out so he can test for him self, and maybe you guys that are close by, have the time to play with it and see , how smooth and stable the Serene is.

We will also be demoing it on IBC 2014 , so please stop buy and test, you will be blown of its smoothness and capability, as well as simplicity in the way you operate, you can even bring your Helix around if you like , and test it with it.

Kind regards

Trust me, you'll love the CS and the design. The capacity is rated up to 20lbs in one of the help documents.

This device looks very interesting. It has me wavering on the Ronin. It sounds like it might be a better fit for connecting to a steadicam.

a few questions

When could we reasonably expect to receive shipment if ordered now?
What is the actual max weight? 20 lbs would be great but is it official?
Why in your opinion is the Helix better than other stabilizers?

Samir,

I see your reservation number that you place June 17. It's definitely not lost in the shuffle.

Hang tight, you number is up soon :)

Have they begun asking for the full payment (not just the deposit) for batch 2? I placed a deposit for batch 2 but have heard nothing after and now suspect I was lost in the shuffle.

Constantine - I appreciate what you are doing with the Serene arm (and your rather massive enthusiasm for it - lol) but, to be honest, the deal killer for me is the Easyrig (not to mention the combined cost). One of the attractions of the Helix, IMO, is it's smaller form factor. I am not even totally in love with the arm/vest approach but it is that much less obtrusive so almost acceptable. I don't really want to be running around with a huge spider dangling over my head.

I look forward to some of the approaches Hien might come up with but I will be looking for something a bit more compact.

Frank - if you look back a couple pages on this thread and see post #1700, it is sort of a brief summary of what I see as the advantages of the Helix.

We have the Easy Rig and Flowcine with RED MX.

Works great but not what I would call small form factor.

Your vest photo Terry is what sold me on the HELIX :)

So stealth and sleek, great for running around with my Scarlet.

Nice Terry, which vest and arm is that? You can PM me if you don't want to give away the trade secrets ;)

Samir, no trade secrets here. That system (I have the sled, too) is made by Zolinger. I was turned on to it by fellow REDuser Chris McKechnie, and I like it quite a bit. My specific unit is no longer made but it is roughly like this one:

Ah, getting close then! Also waiting, GT. Look forward.

sure, shooting style defers, taste too, but in terms of space, and freedom of move, the easyrig serene combination, takes less space as it doesnt expand on the side, and it isnt as high to be a problem in doorways, and at the same time you do high to low transition moves with full stabilised Y axis and full support something that you cannot do with any steadicam adaptation unless, you just connect your single axis on the sled.

My massive enthusiasm as you say, with the LOL next to it,comes out of massive experience operating steadicam , and robotics, being an owner of at least 7 rigs in my career of operation, from 3A to Master S, and rented also all of the top notch gear. If you are at IBC Chris Fawcett will be around, come and ask his opinion about what is comfortable and operational and how you should use a 3axis gimbal if you want to use it with steadicam and with out the sled and most importantly...why.

he will be around and he will be testing our equipment as well.

we would never make this if it didnt make sense.

As for the cost you are mentioning, I will say this again. You are putting a 40K camera up there. Now if you think 5K is too much for a decent support system then we have a different perspective on this business. I operated for 25 years, and Iam not just a product designer.Nor fall for paying excess dollars for what they really were, as a mechanic I knew whats worth buying and what not.

Kind regards

Hey Eric. You are all correct. If we were to make something for a small tiny Scarlet or Epic and no other camera, then its a very easy case to eliminate size in many several ways.

The point though is, that we made everything from Scarlet and caged DSLRS to Red One MX and full Alexa xt and even eng cameras.

So its a very different story all in all.

Iam still standing on my current statement that an easyrig+serene+Helix take less operational usefull size(meaning size that can be a problem in action shots) than any direct mounting on any steadicam arm and vest. And at the same time you have the ability to go from high to low shots and back , in one useful fluid transition and full vertical axis stabilization.

kind regards
