Some years ago Jim & Jarred and friends set out to make a small affordable 4K Cinema camera. Now it has changed the industry and almost everyone who buys a TV buys a 4K display and most camera manufacturers have gone 4K. Also Netflix and Amazon require true 4K capture.

Then Red decided to create a large format sensor breaking the norm of the Super 35 sensor. Arri also has their Alexa 65.So yesterday Leica introduced their Thalia primes that are designed for large sensor cameras including Weapon 8K VV, the Red based Panavision DXL and the Arri 65.

So many people said there was no need for 4K capture. Then people said no meed for large format sensors.

It would appear that J & J are pretty damn prescient......

Great job...(although I am sorry Jarred that you left the Leica soiree last night so fast)

I'm so sad I wasn't there for the event, but I am off shooting with the Weapon 8K VV Dragon and large format digital cinema has been a wonderful world to explore.

8K itself is a remarkable thing when it comes to motion picture production, and RED had the foresight to create S35 and VV solutions on that front.

I'll be very curious to see what the future holds.

Leica's Thalia announcement came as a real surprise, although expected at some point in the future.

Cooke's recent announcement of a "Panchro Classic" prime set is nice, but at this point it's hard to say whether it will differentiate
itself from the rest of its lineup with only a three-perf image circle, compared to Thalia's 65mm applicability.

Leica's announcement is truly ahead of the curve in respect to its competitors.

Yup.

And all in that little incredible thing called REDCODE RAW, that let us (at first at least) record 4K to CF cards. That is so 2007 now. :)

Oh hell yes!

Oh hell yes!

When the VV sensor size was first announced I started checking into MF lens options and the Leica-S glass looked like the ideal solution. I quickly discovered the actual physical mount and electronic interface of the Leica-S lenses would not be easily adapted to cinema style operation on a PL mount. Ketch suggested that mods would be a waste of time and it would require a ground up redesign of everything but the optical formula to be truly useful. I lamented that there were probably too few potential customers to motivate Leica to undertake such a program. So glad I was wrong about that and big shout out to Leica for stepping up!

Can't wait to give the Thalia's a try! Now I just need my VV allocated...

Cheers - #19
