My Fair Lady (1964)
Directed by George Cukor
Winner of 8 Academy Awards Including Best Picture & Best Director
Shot on Super Panavision

I saw this movie for the first time when a was a kid in a re-run back in the 70'. As far I remember I was impressed by the size of the Cinemascope screen and the stereo sound, I was blown-up!...I believe it was the very first movie I saw in a movie theater.
Here there is an interesting BTS video back from that time.

I can't limit myself to one, hell, I can barely boil it down to twenty. Here's six.

Why these movies? Because they carry me, they're pure poetry of motion, sound and story. Bigger than life yet all about life. That's what I like about them.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

8 1/2 (plus anything Fellini for that matter, Roma, Amarcord, La Dolce Vita...)

Days of Heaven

Fanny and Alexander

Wings of Desire

The Godfather

Not to mention anything Kubrick, Antonioni, Ozu, Truffaut, Coen Brothers, Scorsese....

Blade Runner

Great cast, sets and a multi level enigma of a story. The last of the sci fi 'optical fx' movies. Still a vast reference library for influence - such as the 'enhance' technique in every cop show. And the bad guy gets the best lines, as well as the most poignant demise.

+ 1

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Fanny & Alexander
The Shining
Blade Runner

+1 on Wings of Desire, which I actually saw with Spanish subtitles in Madrid in 1988.

Honestly though, this topic is too broad, and tastes are too varied, for an adequate discussion.

My favorite four are:
"Seven Samurai"
"Doctor Strangelove"
"2001"
"Lawrence of Arabia"

The movie that made me want to make movies was "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", which I saw when I was 15... though as a child, the movie that gripped my imagination was the original b&w "Godzilla". And I watched a lot of "Star Trek" reruns on television.

It would be impossible for me to narrow it down to 10, even 20. Some have already been listed even.

I will say that when I was in my early teens I saw Jurassic Park in theaters and that pushed it over the edge for me. At that point I knew I wanted to work in motion pictures. I still have the ticket from opening weekend in a jewelry box next to my bed.

No movie makes me feel like I do when I watch American Beauty. (Be aware that the video below is a total spoiler)

I also love Blade Runner, Days of Heaven, Apocalypse Now, and the Godfather 1 and 2.

And for sheer entertainment value, Lord of the Rings and the Matrix. And the original Star Wars movies.

Sorry to throw in another Terentino film in here, but I think Inglorious Bastards is Quentin at his best. The bar scene with Fassbender might be the best dialogue scene i've ever seen, the opening scene at the french farm is pretty f'n incredible too. Just damn good writing....

Children of Men is some off the best camera and lighting work ever...the tracking scene as Clive Owen is escaping from the safe house behind cars, then steals the car. The lighting in that scene blew me away!
How about - A Very Long Engagement
hmmm, and for another current filmmaker Joe Wrights films are ALWAYS incredibly visually striking no matter what the content, i.e. HANNAH, Atonement
Older films...Sword of Doom, African Queen, Scarlet Pimpernel (Ian Mckellen)
Films I watched over and over as a kid (I'm 30)...Goonies, Dark Crystal, Labrynth

Lots more but those come to mind quickly
