  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Since Dragon is all about 6k sensor and coverage

1) What lenses would cover 6k.
2) Do you think the lense companies would be in progress of new generation of lenses
3) Is it worth investing in the new Dragon sensor if there are limited lenses that covers 6k.

well from that thread, it looks like only k35 cover 6k. I'm looking for answer to all questions above

All FULL FRAME stills lenses cover 6K....EASILY (there is SO MUCH misunderstanding about Dragon it makes my head spin). So think Leica R's, Zeiss ZF/ZE/CP2, Zeiss Contax, Canon L, Nikon G. There are many STILL lenses to choose from.

In terms of CINEMA GLASS, only CP2's, the new Canon Cine lenses, and K35's have similar full frame coverage. Until we see the final specs for Dragon its unclear what S35 lenses cover. A lot of the newer lenses (for example the latest Cookes) have quite big image circles, so they may cover.

But until we know FOR SURE what the Dragon sensor size is, FULL FRAME glass is the only SAFE WAY TO GO.

i'm looking to invest in master prime, so would they cover 6k, if not do you think zeiss might be working on something new

The new Zeiss CP.2 super speed lenses are supposed to cover a FF sensor and should be fine for 6k.

1) What lenses would cover 6k.

Super 35 3-perf has a size of 24.89mmx14mm. The Red Epic 5K is 27.7mmx14.6mm, and dragon is 30.7mmx15.8mm

As you can see, the dragon is under the '31mm' limit, which Arri Primes, both master and ultra follow. Cooke S4s are fine, but S5i only has an image circle of 30mm so it is doubtful.

Some primes have image circles greater than 40mm. Here's an excellent resource for you to check out: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...JNdFpMZ0JtX2xCdFBxamFwY2NRM0VIanc&output=html

Any FF still lens should cover the sensor, but it is a different issue of whether or not they will be able to resolve the pixel detail. Only the best still camera lenses will resolve it, as you can see from the data on the Nikon D800 or APS-C cameras.

2) Do you think the lense companies would be in progress of new generation of lenses

They should, because the pixel densities in still camera lenses are getting tighter and tigther. But whether or not this will translate to cinema lenses is tough to answer. How many need 4K, let alone 6K?

3) Is it worth investing in the new Dragon sensor if there are limited lenses that covers 6k.

Do you need 5K? Is 5K too small for whatever work you're doing? Then upgrade to 6K. There are enough lenses so that shouldn't be your main worry!

Hope this helps.

You are confusing things even further. "31mm" limit is not the width of the frame but the diagonal.
Please do the research first before making false statements.
Unbelievable...

31mm is the diameter of the image circle. You are correct, please disregard my statement about the '31mm' limit. I meant 34.5mm, the diagonal...which means many lenses won't meet the needs of the dragon sensor.

Which lense are you talking about that won't meet the need to dragon
