  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lens kit suggestions...

Ha! so harsh!
using RED and 5D, i too thought that particular video, in large, could pass for 5D footage at that quality. plus i did notice rolling shutter in some of the handheld shots. And if that was a typical example of what i was hoping to get from Epic, it would certainly be wise to save cash and stick with a 5D!

which is no slight on Joseph, who is obviously doing no-light quick and dirty tests, and kindly uploading to share.

Jesus Christ! (said like Mr. Slave)

I never said the stuff looked bad. I just said it looked a little 5Dish during the night shots. The rolling shutter is subtle, but it's there. I can tell it's not on any support system. And believe me, I can tell a huge difference in Epic and 5D stuff when it's not just low light, iris all the way open, shutter cranked up, hand held cinematography we're talking about.

This takes me back to another point. I wanna see more Canon stuff shot through the Epic. I think I could manage with Canon lenses. But I could probably also rent out Zeiss CPs and make the extra $10,000 back pretty quickly. There aren't many super high end prime lens options around Louisville, KY. Just trying to weigh my options.

Questions:
1. I've seen the video where you can tap the part of the screen that you want focused when you're using the Canon mount, but can you put that thing on a timer? I'm guessing you can't set it to rack focus over like 15 seconds, right?

2. Will 16mm PL lenses fit on the epic? If so, would they cover up the 2k part of the sensor?

Kris . . . I won't waste my epic, but the first video I shoot will definitely be of me lighting a fart at 300fps.

You guys who see rolling shutter.... need your eyes checked.

Hand held, Epic-M... do you see rolling shutter here?

That's real purdy ocean stuff there. You wouldn't be able to see the jello-y effect in slow motion which everything is shot at. Also, your stuff is shot in the day. Looks great! Just like what I'd want my epic to look like.

2. It only looks like a DSLR once it gets dark in this video and the shutter and iris are kicked way up. The colors are obviously better, but I've seen 5D stuff that has come pretty close. I also think it looks DSLRish when shrunk down to Vimeo size.
3. Pot

well you must not be in Cali

You gotta remember that it's all shot with available lighting. Maybe it looks DSLRish to you because well, as we all know, you don't need to use lights with DSLRs...EVER!! LOL!

After a careful look ... there is no rolling shutter skew in Joseph's video.

I didn't think your issues had any merit when I first read them, but you were so insistent, I thought I'd take a close look.

The indicated times are the camera vibrating, but if you look at the geometry of the objects in the frame they are rock solid.

In any case ... no lens would contribute to rolling shutter skew ... and you really really ought to know that. It is purely a function of the sensor readout.

As to the "DSLR quality" you guys cite ... you are so far off the mark its remarkable. As a DSLR owner I can tell you that Joseph's video, if shot with a 7D would exhibit skew, and it would be far grainier even with fast f/1.2 lenses wide open. There are compression artifacts, but they are clearly from vimeo, and you can see similar artifacts in 35mm originated materials.

I would advise you to learn to discern image quality a lot more finely before investing in a camera or lens set at these prices.

Frankly I think the Epic is a very smart choice for any film maker - even ones who can not really understand what they are looking at.

I think Canon lenses make fine images, but they are definitely not up to the standards of PL mount lenses. Of course they are also not anywhere near the cost either.

The tone once again is lowered, sigh..

Those who say, if you clearly cant see the beauty of Epic in this video you shouldn't get one.. i say the opposite:

"if that was a typical example of what you were hoping to get from Epic, it would certainly be wise to save cash and stick with a 5D!" I think those who consider this a paragon of Epics capability are themselves far less discerning, because i don't think its entirely a good example of the cameras great capabilities or quality. wether its real jello, or the illusion of such from fumbling fingers juddering the image, the end result is much the same, and contributes to a "DSLR Look".

plus Epic isnt a smart choice for every filmmaker at all! Especially those who "cant understand what there looking at" i have seen RED footage completely butchered before, and the raw workflow and redcine x is only a good thing in understanding hands.
