  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica SummiCRON-C's......

they wont be less than 8 to 10 k a piece

I'd say higher.

Summilux-C's cost what? 20k-22k a lens? I think the Summicron's are going to be more like Ultra prime- Cooke S4/i price range. I don't know anything, but knowing Leica, and knowing past pricing, I'd say this is right, but liberally low. I'm expecting 12-14k/lens.

Very cool though. Not sure if they really had to be smaller, but cool enough. Let's hope the excellent spacing and cam-expanded focus travel stays the same. And as many have said, someone is going to have a great 2016 Christmas, haha.

Hmm.... UP's average 13.5 k (T1.9) and S4s 18.5k (T2.0). The Summicron's design is brand new AND considering how much ass the Summiluxes are kicking... I would guess 17k to 18k per lens. If I start saving now I should be good by the eventual availability date. Ha

Leica is definitely going somewhere. Andreas Kaufmann took his company out of the stock market to personally control his families legacy. He bought ever share holder out at double the share price and took his company back. Leica was hurting...

Now he's out of the market with no one to answer to, his families backing their monetary empire to back his vision, plus an exclusive partnership with Otto; he's on to a good start.

More on the man, his partners and the dream.

From the interview, IMO this is a man with vision:

"I had a strong belief... you can create value in companies.... I presented an idea to my brothers. If you have the right strategy, a little bit of luck and a good management team, you can turn companies into a value creation engine."

"I was heavily influenced by the ’68 movement. When I finished school, my goal was to revolutionize the world."

-Sounds similar to someone else we all know around here.

Amazing news!!!!

Maybe after that brand new Summicron C primes series it could come the first Leica C lightweight PL zooms...!!!???

What is the current wait time for a set of Summilux C's anyway?

Still, if you can afford a $17k lens, you can probably afford a ~$25k lens. I don't see these lenses as targeting a different segment than the Summilux-C's if the price is that high.

If I were Leica I would be aiming for a much bigger gap. Then again since they already can't meet demand, more volume is probably not one of their goals...

On that I agree, even so its still a 56k difference on a set of 8, but I put this lenses at 15k each as that to me is a more just price, of course they can't absolute be in the same price range of the old Ultra Primes, as the Summilux are pricers then the less old but still old Master Primes.

I was just thinking... in the world of Stills glass the Summicrons are often better lenses than the Summiluxes. Since they give up a stop of light, they can make less compromises in optical design. I wonder how that will play out with the Cine glass???

Talking one lens, if you can afford $17K, it's not a huge stretch to get to $25K... Talking about a whole set of lenses, 3 or 5 or more, that additional $8K per lens is a HUGE difference in total cost.

What about the Zeiss pricing scheme? Ultras are just a wee bit more than double the cost of CP.2's. And there is a long wait list to get them right now because they have become the de-facto standard for primes on S3D rigs among other things lately. For many shooters, they are preferred over the Masters because they're not quite as big and heavy. I'm not sure I understand that logic since most cinema rigs are monstrously huge anyway. The Alexa body weighs in at 17lbs all by itself... Master primes are only about 25% more than the Ultras and are superior in almost every way. Other than focal length choice and the fact that they're discontinued, I'd choose RPP's over Ultras any day of the week, but that's a whole other discussion. All that considered, I can find sets of used Masters easer than I can get my hands on Ultras and often times the used Masters are the same price or LESS than a new set of Ultras because of the demand!

While I want to agree with you and that I'd love to see a much cheaper set of Leicas, I do think that they know what they're doing here. Look at the market right now... I can buy a set of 7 Summilux-C's for $200K with a 14 to 18 month wait for them or, if I'm very lucky, score the same set now on the used market for about $260K... Now what if they offer an equivalent 7-lens set with the same or very similar focal lengths, but a bit smaller lenses, a bit smaller/ slower apertures, still have that wonderful Leica glass... What if that set is $123K or about $17.5K per lens? And they're set up to produce them in greater volume...? You don't think those new Summicron-C's are going to sell like proverbial hotcakes?

That's an excellent point I did not think of.

Interesting point. I think size might be the reason it doesn't play out this way in cine glass, though.

The reason this is true of Leica M glass to a greater degree than some others is that they put significant restrictions on size. If Leica wants an 85 1.4 that's better than their 85 2.5, they have to compromise to keep the size similar. If Nikon wants an 85 1.4 that's better than their 85 1.8, they just make it twice as friggin' big and heavy.

Leica hasn't followed put the same restrictions on the Summilux-C's. They're certainly not Master Primes, but they're not tiny. I don't think there have been too many compromises for size.

Of course they could build Summicron-C's the same size that were better, but they're making Summicron-C's that are a bit smaller. I think what we'll see is slightly lower size/weight/price but equivalent quality (which is no small achievement, in my opinion).

Ok, who else was drooling over the few prototypes they had at NAB? The girl at the little glass case wasn't told a whole lot about them. She said they would be $92k for a set of 6 (or maybe 8) No, 6. She said they would start shipping in July. Riiiiiiiight. Also said they would cover 4k whereas the Summiluxes cover 8k. I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean.

I'd love to know actual pricing, availability and physical image circle size.

Overall they were exceptionally built, quite small and lightweight. I'd actually consider selling my Mini S4's to help finance these babies. Can't wait to hear how they shake out.

From what I've learned from them and one Reduser who has pre-ordered them they cover 33mm diagonal easily. The price you were quoted was likely the price for a set of 6 lenses as that confirms the price I was given a month ago. I was told "shipping summer" this year, so they will be out there in the wild at some point. There's already a waiting list on these guys from what I understand.

That woman running the booth was very snarky when Shervin tried to take a photo of the lens. Oh well, I still want those lenses!

She wouldn't even let me take a photo with my M9! They sure would be nice and light for a MōVi rig ;) So they look to be about 15.5k / Lens. Not bad.

I'll have to take consolation in my Leica-Rs for now.... once they come back from Van Diemen.
