  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Nice job, well done. Good shots and grade. No, i am not off to Cannes..

Hi Everyone,

I already posted this in the "Shot On Red" section but as suggested by Mark, here's a short film I've shot with my Leica R set on both Monstro and Helium.

I owe a lot to the "Leica R on Red: Pictures" thread as it is where I pretty much found all the knowledge and infos to build my set... Let's be honest, I also found some lenses here ;)

Big up to David who created it and to Mark, Tommaso and all the other Redusers always ready to share advices and knowledge.

For those who've seen it, sorry for double posting, for the others here's Island Hopping, hope you enjoy it:

Here is the trailer for a film we just finished. I shot it almost entirely with my Leica Rs. If you go to Cannes, stop by Shoreline to check it out.

Larry, very nice look and congrats on wrapping the film! Will stop by if I'm in the neighborhood...

Certainly double-post worthy Vincent, I can watch it again and again... :lurk5:

Hello fello Leica lovers

I've built a set of Leica R lenses ranging between 307 and 327 (1980-1983).

My biggest question with the set is the 19mm version 1.
A. Any tips on keeping the MASSIVE front element free of scratches? I'm thinking UV filter?
B. Anyone know the filter size for this lens? I'm wanting to attach it to a matte box.

Look forward to posting some images!

Hey, Matthew. Congrats on the set of Rs. I don't remember the filter size. But, I put an 80mm front from Cordvision on mine. Works great with a mattebox.

Hello Leica peoples (my peoples).

Unfortunately coming to you all with not so great news. My 19mm Elmarit R v2 took a spill - FORTUNATELY the lens hood/cap took the brunt of it, BUT the camera-left side of the lens has been compressed a bit (if you're looking at the lens from above, it's slightly bent to the left. The image is still OK and the glass appears to be unscathed, but the focus is noticeably softer on the left side of the image (re-compressing it by hand will actually fix the image and bring it back into focus). REAL bummer. Any ideas what I can do to service it? The lens is still a beauty, but the housing appears to be bent. :-/ Anything I can do to save my favorite lens?

Thanks for your time!

Chad

Chad, probably the only cost effective way would be keeping the housing as is if the lens elements can still be tuned back into the original position by a wizard lens tech or, worst case...perfect excuse to start migrating the set into a rehousing... ;-)

I decided to go with summicron's due to fact that I wanted my set to be slightly more 'vintage'. The summiluxes are more modern if I'm correct?

Not really, only 35 1.4 E67 and 50 1.4 E60

Just a bit of care and love ha! UV filters (even good ones) adds halation, flares and lower contrast, so it can be good or bad, it depends...

Also 19 V1 has massive CAs till 4/5.6 so keep this in mind if shooting high contrast scenes

82mm

DON'T USE CLAMP ON MATTEBOXES WITH LEICA-R...the helicoid is fragile like in all these kind of lenses...
this is a 100% sure way of loosening the lens, developing focus/image shift and other mechanical issues

Sounds like when it fell the element(s) shifted enough to cause de-centering. Occasionally folks sell these as "body only" for relatively cheap when rehousing a set. Maybe keep your eyes peeled for one, or even post a WTB for Leica R 19 v2 body only and hope someone who has one laying around will get in touch. And like Tomasso mentioned, find a good lens tech who can move the elements into the new housing and check for decentering, consistent focus action, etc. Best of luck!

Thanks Tomasso and Mark! Oh man, if I could afford rehousing to a PL body, I would - but I wouldn't be able to afford my whole set at this point.

I'll be on the lookout for Leica R 19 v2 bodies! Shame because this one had a decently high s/n #3796xxx

Looks great, what lenses were this exactly?

Thanks!

Chad, you might contact Kim Camera in Korea, TLS in England or GL Optics in China. I believe they rehouse Leicas. Not sure about the 19mm v2 though. Good luck. The 19mm v2 is a gem!

Anyone know if I can clamp a Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom Matte Box to the Leica R's in their original housing? Will I destroy the lens if I try?
