  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Need a little help. Just jumped in and started building my set through Mark M (Thanks, Mark!). The glass was well worth the money. I've only been able to test it on a spare camera we had. Noticed that the 35mm Summicron does not fit on an EF Speedbooster. There is a black flange/protrusion that sticks out just enough to prevent the lens from sitting flush on the speedbooster mount. I've read that the 35 and 50 Summicron lenses both have this. Are there any other lenses that have the same protrusion?

I'm not keen on further modifying the lens unless the pros outweigh the cons. That being said, I had a few questions:

1. Can this be shaven down to allow use on multiple EF mounts?
2. Does Duclos or similar offer this service? (I'm not interested in doing this myself)
3. What are the cons of doing this? Does it just mean I can't use the lens on R-series cameras? Any other downsides to shaving this down?

Thanks, guys.

I do have the same problems with my Summicrons on a speedbooster. Any recommendations in Europe are welcome!

My latest, shot on the Monstro and Leica R's (gemini on the Movi)

Wheww!! The Leica's look great, but I'm really digging the clean whites and thick neutral skin tones... hell the palette in general is so clean (there is no colour contamination... how was this lit? Who did the colour correction?)

A precision file and patience will do...

Remember to cover the surrounding area with masking tape and just be safe...

Well, went and bought a precision file kit and sat down. $4 and 15 min later it works perfectly with the speedbooster. Thanks!

I lit it mainly with sky panels. Very little correction required.
here's another shot Monstro with the R's. 99% bounce and trace

This looks stunning, specially the skin tones. I need a Leica R set in my life...

Does anyone know how to remove the sliding hood on a Leica R 135mm? My front ring from Cordvision doesn't seem to thread onto it and I believe it's the hood that's protruding too far so the threads don't reach. The ring I have is a 55mm thread front ring (E55).

Brian. I believe Duclos has a replacement ring for that hood, as well as for the 19mm.

Edit: sorry i spoke too soon. It might just be for the 19mm. Still worth a request however.

Hey Brian, I've thought about trying this myself but usually have Duclos or Steve's Camera do this type of work (rather inexpensive).

And if it happens to be the old v1 (serial #22... and earlier) you should be able to unscrew the retaining filter ring on the front, then it should work.

Cheers

For my 135mm, I got a 55mm to 77mm step up ring and screwed a Cordvision 80mm front onto that. The hood didn't give me any problems.

Hey Giles, can you elaborate a bit on how your Leica Rs covered the Monstro sensor? Did you have to crop in or were you able to shoot at 8K? Gorgeous images!

Hey guys,

This small film I did back in 2016 finally arrives on April 12th in the States titled A Dark Place and April 19th in the UK as Steel Country.
Shot predominately on rehoused Leica R and Angenieux Optimo Zooms. Main camera was Alexa Mini but I used a Red Epic or Dragon (can't remember it was provided as loan) for a lot b-roll shots during prep.
I hope it finds a good audience.

35, 50, 80mm Leica R Summilux
19mm Leica R Elmarit
70-180mm Duclos Leica R
24, 100mm Canon FD
15-40mm & 28-76 Optimo

All primes were rehoused by P+S Technik

Bulk of the work was on the 35, 50 & 80mm and zooms

All shot at 8kHD. The 28mm is the widest you can get away with (as this is vista vision that is very wide). No vignette unless you are trying to create it, and then its negligible.
The still attached is wide open from the 70-180, which resolves with a jaw dropping quality and sharpness.
I haven't had my lens rehoused and I keep wanting to, but the place I wanted them done (TLS) has a tie up with another company who are charging too much. Shame. That said, I kinda like them in there original form and as I am a complete control freak, I pull my own focus a lot and know the lens very well so can get away with it.

Sean Porter who shot Green Book, moded his R's in his early days and was the reason he chose to shoot Green book on the Summilux c's

What more can you say?

Got another fashion job with them this week and can't wait. A joy to shoot with.

I just spent watching GB lens tests. Amazing is how much Leica R TLS rehouse breathe. Never realised it before.
