  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

I can't decide between 24mm and 28mm (not the last version). Any advice?

If you're also planning on using them for stills work, the 24mm won't clear the mirror on Canon DSLRs. info here. That was a deal-breaker for me, even though I've heard great things about the 24mm optically. The 24mm is certainly more expensive.

What is wrong with version 1 of the 28mm? Version 2 is much later than the set I'm building - All around approx 1980... Should I still get the version 2 or will it differ too much from the other lenses?

I had the 24 vs 28 debate for years, I found a late SN 24 in great condition for a bit under $700 with a return policy so I figured I'd nothing to loose so I'd see how it was, incredible lens.. So much so I can't see how the 28 can be that much better...

The 28 v1 is tiny but I've found it renders a little better than an older 24 pre-rom. I've compared them a couple times and 28 consistently was a bit sharper in the center and showed less CA in the outer regions. It also has a much longer focus throw at about 280 degrees vs 110 or so on the 24. But for some 24mm focal length is preferred or a better fit for their set, and the optical differences aren't huge.

Hey guys, I had a question about the Leica R's that I feel you all would be best to clear up for me. Is there a distinct difference in quality between glass made in Germany as opposed to Canada? I've seen a ton of lenses being sold around online and for some reason those made in Canada seem to get less traction and attention than those labeled Wetzlar Germany. Thanks!

IMO, that's a collector's bias and has nothing to do with the optical or build quality.

But some collectors will probably disagree :)

My lenses bear out this description. The v1 28 is a really great lens. The older 24s less so -

The difference in optical quality has much more to do with when a lens was produced and which version it is. A 90 AA Summicron made in Germany in the late 90s will out-resolve a 90mm Summicron made in Canada in '78 because the design is almost 30 years newer (with apo/aspherical glass), but not since it was made in Germany. By the same token a Canadian Summicron made in the 80s renders sharper edges than a German Summicron from the early 70s. And some of the best Leica designers were working in Canada in the 70s.

But I believe LR production wound down in Canada around 1990 as later 90s glass seems to have been solely produced in Germany like the APOs, late Summiluxes and other v3s (with the exception of a couple zooms). Because of this most of the highest resolving glass was technically made in Germany but only because Leica Canada was no longer producing LRs by then.

Thanks Mark. Happy with my 35/50 crons so far. I think next up is 60 or 100 macros. You have to post more photos using that 100. (I have to save up so take your time) ;)

Has it been long enough Samir? ;)

Oh no Mark! Not long enough. Between saving up for Raven and completing the Leica-R set you could have given me some more time. . Thinking I have about 3 months realistically til Ravens begin shipping so looks like the 100APO is next! Tell us what are we looking at.

Well I'm sure it'll be worth the wait along with Raven.

Those are screen grabs from high speed 5k sequence on epic dragon/ 100 macro with LL olpf for an opening I worked on last month shooting smoke. Will hopefully get around to posting a clip at some point.

Great stuff Lewis!!

I was wondering if you could tell me if those first shots were the Ange'? and if so which Ange' did you use? GREAT looking shots! Especially love the opening shots!

Thanks John! Yeah I used the Angénieux 35-70mm for most of it, great lens! (sorry the video is temporarily offline)
