  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

can anyone recommend a good place to have leicas modified ? I would like to get mine declicked and permanent EF mount installed. tried duclos but didnt get an answer from them yet.

I was curious if these are what you are looking for? I saw them the other day. https://thomascznarty.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/gl-optics-to-offer-rehoused-leica-cinema-lenses/

they show them on cinema glass' site for 25k

I know you are looking for someone to just mod them, so I would assume Nan would be that guy, right?

Hi Dominik!

Duclos are annoyingly long replying, I always have to email Matthew a few times before I get a reply. Their prices are on their website for what you need and they do it very well. I have many lenses modified from them. They do great quality work. I recommend you just fill the form and ship your lenses directly. They'll get back with a quote and once you pay they do your lenses and ship them back to you quickly enough.

You can also try Colin Sanders at True Lens Services in the UK. I'm in touch with them at the moment and I'll try their "Cine Shot" modification service next. They come highly recommended by Duclos so I guess they can be trusted! They are also a bit cheaper than Duclos (and closer to me too since I'm in Paris!).

TLS Optics typical costs for Cine Shot conversions are as follows:

De-click £38.00
FF Gear (from) £66.00
80mm Front £48.00
80mm Cap £12.50
95mm Front £58.00
95mm Cap £18.00
EF Mount £74.00

Hope that helps!

just for my knowledge. are the ones on G&L the same lenses you guys are talking about in this thread? what you guys have been posting look fantastic!

Vincent,

did you change mounts on your set. I'd like to change mine to PL. How do the iris resolve? When I went to nikon the iris did change.

David,

TLS mounted a Leitax EOS on each of my lenses.

It's actually glued on the original mount so it's an adapter not a proper mount conversion and it doesn't affect the iris.

Everything works well but I had one issue with my 35mm, after a couple of shoots, every time I racked focus, the iris opened or closed by itself.

I sent the lens back to TLS and they fixed it then send it, all that at no cost.

You probably want to talk with Keith Truslove about the PL conversion, I'm sure he has a good idea on how it will affect the iris.

He's the director so when you hit this email he's usually the first one to receive it: sales@truelens.co.uk

Wow, their modular system is amazing! How far away were you??

Hi Mark,
Yes it looks very good compared to the 300-800mm Sigma I had to compare. I was about 50-60 feet far. The modular system with the 2x focus module and the 2x apo extender is amazing. Best telephoto I ever used with the exception of the 280 F4 Leica - or they go head to head?

However... I was not so much impressed with the Dragon as I was with the GH4. I really Hate to say that but I say what I see. The Dragon shots had what I originally thought CA especially in highlights. On the CH4 there was Nothing to suggest that so I think it's something that has to do either with the olpf (low light in this case), calibration issue, the processor or a combination?

On the GH4 in un edited 4k 24fps I think it becomes 3200mm? but the shots looked like you shot them with some kind of a 50mm "Master Prime" (with respect to MP) in sharpness, color, contrast, latitude etc. I had to look them 20 times to believe what I was seeing... Very unexpected/puzzled.

What does it mean when these lenses are annotated with 1, 2, or 3? And how much does the look differ from one to another... if at all?

ex.
Leica R Summicron 2
Leica R Elmarit 3

1,2,3 refer to the number of cams. 1 are older, 3's are the newest lenses.

Its better to get the serial number of the lens, that will then give you the production year and the number produced during that production run, it also gives you the focal length and aperture of each lens.

Get the Leica pocket guide by Erwin puts, which provides all these details and a full list of serial numbers, where the lens was made, etc.

Amazing!! Thanks for sharing that

Have any of you experienced purple/ green fringing in hi contrast out of focus parts of the image with your Leica R's while shooting wide open? I've been playing around with my 35 f2 and 50 1.4 and it's been popping up. It's making me wonder if they need to go in for maintenance.
