  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Bob there is a wonderful softness to the highlights there. Love it! Funny how glass only 20 years old retains so much CHARACTER, and yet is still VERY SHARP and usable. Love it.

Superb examples Bob

Bob,

such clean looks and lines. Can really feel your architectural photography background in these images and really shows off the resolving power, color and contrast of these lenses.

Thanks for joining the party.

Really nice stuff. Love the texture in your piece JP and mark, what is that? some light hitting some fabric, feels like and ocean.

Just thought I would add some 100mm APO 2.8 Macro...love this lens...

Great shots David, love the fine details and reflections. The 100mm APO is truly a Legend that continues delivering to this day.

And good eyes, the abstract was ebbing sunlight hitting iridescent fabric.

Mark,

thanks!

That fabric is really cool. Yes. I know the zeiss goes to F2.0 but I'm not sure I'd trade the Leica macro for it. It's sharp, smooth with nice separation as well.

Hey all,

I currently have a decent Contax Zeiss set and my colleague is looking to get a complimentary Leica R set so we can choose the rendering from our glass depending on subject.

I was wondering, if he was going to dip his toe in the leica waters and you chaps could recommend a relatively inexpensive basic 3-4 lens set what should he be looking at to go from wides to typical portrait lengths?

Thanks in advance.

Ben if you are on budget maybe you could have a close look to the old summicron serie. 35-50-90
The 19 Elmarit version 1 and 28 Elmarit aren't that expensive aswell.

19 Elmarit version 1 70's (tend to flare like a CZ AE ;-) )

Some very rich, yet subtle tones in those landscapes Brice.

+1 on summicron series with elmarit wides on a budget.
For a Macro option, and good all-around lens with a long throw, add the 60mm elmarit.

Interesting side note (to me anyways), earlier this week I shot charts to compare an earlier v2 vs late mint rom v2 60mm, and could see no difference in sharpness. But what surprised me is the early 60 exhibited a slight red cast and some red chromatic aberrations in the out-of-focus areas, which I expected, whereas the late mint rom had a slight green cast in the same areas instead. Both were at K3300 in Tungsten light. Of the two, my eyes slightly preferred the older's red bias and assume the difference was from coating updates somewhere along the line. From what I've gathered Leica was known to tweak/update their coating formulas periodically, even within the same lines.

A 3 in 1 example of the Leica APO 100mm screen grab from a current MV project, all shot on Scarlet at 4+5k.

I projected some abstract 100mm macro clips on the lead singer from one side with a single dimmed light on the other, which was captured on the same 100mm Leica macro.
In post I added a 3rd 100mm macro layer (primarily the aqua blue coming in from the upper right).

Great, great stuff guys.

brice, I love those moments when we find storms and sun in chianti! Gorgeous! and mark 100mm APO x 3 is very cool.

mathew,

you are getting good advice here, start with the f2 35mm, 50mm and a 90mm 2.8. The nice thing about these lenses is the mechanics and the weight. Definitely a step way up from where stills went when autofocus forced short focus throws and lighter weight.
