  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine

There's no catch…Leica-R are fantastic lenses. There is a large variation in cost depending on the desirability of each specific lens…while some lenses are available below $1000, other models are more than $3000 each. I would expect that a set of 5 lenses, all cinemodded, with EF mount, will cost in the $6000-$10000 range. After conversion to Canon EF mount, especially using Leitax "permanent" stainless steel mounts, these lenses will be perfect for Raven. Duclos is a great source for cinemodded Leica-R sets, and so is RP Lens, here in Grand Rapids, MI.

Thank you, Tom, for the info and the link.
From the pictures posted on Reduser and from videos uploaded on the internet I really love the look of LeicaR lenses. It's not modern but not old either. It's very film look. I like that!
Thanks again

The trick is to not be in a hurry and start to shop around for your R lenses. Figure out what 2 or 3 you would like for your core set and then build on that over time. It took me over a year to get the lenses with the serial numbers I liked. Here is a good place to get some info on Leica lenses

Warning buying vintage glass is addictive and can be habit forming....
Good luck.

Thank you Russ,
that's exactly what I'm gonna do. For tha start I need 3 lenses. I don't have the money for the whole set. And than buy more and more. I guess two or three lenses will by just fine for the start. 25, 50 and 85 for the start.

The 25 and 85 will be hard to find :-) I kid here, Lieca doesn't have these focal lengths to my knowledge. The the desirable Lieca Rs are the 19 ver. 2, 28, 35, 50, 60 macro, 80 and 90 the crons are great but some pony up,for the more expensive and harder to find Luxes.

Well sure, they are primarily stills lenses, but cine versions of these lenses exist(ed) in different flavors, Dalsa, Panavision, GL Optics (the only widely available option as far as I know).

EDIT: I just realised that you deleted your post, so my post doesn't make much sense, anyway..

yes they were converted, yet they are the same lenses...but try to find those :)
And based on the OP's first post, he wasn't asking about these.

and just to clarify, they are not "primarily" still lenses. They are simply still lenses.

Hello,

I have a question regarding Lecia R Cine lenses.
Everyone says they're excelent and I see them for 900 dollars per lens on REDuser.
Some of them are even with Canon EF Mount.
Is there any catch? Will they work with the Raven?

Thanks

You also may want to try matching SN#s to some degree within a set as Leica updated their optical coatings every few years. Though each tweak was rather minor two of the same lenses from more than a decade apart can render colors quite differently.

And in general I find its good to acquire copies from around the 80s and later for better build quality and less optical issues that tend to crop up over time.

Remember when you pick your lenses to correct for the crop factor.

For a good starter set, you might want to consider 28 v.1 (still very good), 60 macro (very close to the 50 and macro comes in handy) and the 90 (which is a great portrait lens, fast and relatively inexpensive).

And FWIW, the 135 is a great lens for very little $.
