  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

The last shot, the close up of the painting, is actually the 100mm APO macro. I believe it is the lens to which all other lenses are judged in terms of performance and sharpness, widely known as one of the best lenses on earth in its class. I use it mainly for macro work with jewelry where you can get assassinated by CA.

Yes,
it is called Zeiss 100mm f2.0 Macro ;-)

Lack of APO is the Zeiss achilles heel imo, however it only crops up in a big way under specific conditions.

But back to Leica's 100mm APO macro, though the design remained the same throughout its 20+ year production run (1987-2009 or so) does anyone know if the coatings were updated at any point? Because its the lens I use most now (on Scarlet @ typically 5k/12fps/macro), I'm wondering if there'd be any discernible difference depending on production year. From what I gather there shouldn't but rumors of other Leica's receiving new coatings with no public announcement towards the end of their run crop up.

Great thread! I love the look of Leica-R's with RED cameras :)

Does enyone of you use 180mm f2.8 APO and/or 280mm f2.8 APO? I'm wondering if they are as good as they are expensive...
I have really never used a 280mm and wonder how versatile these focal lengths are to filmmakers.

An 80 Summilux should arrive any day now, which I can't wait to use. My 35 came in last week, which looked awesome but wouldn't back-focus. Fortunately its under warranty though and sent it back to get re-calibrated.

Anyone using the 80 lux much these days?

seems like it's the 80 or the 35 lux all day these days. It blooms in a pleasant way wide open, but I have to say, these lenses just force you into a kind of love affair with the image the produce.

I think I went way over board with my glass collecting mania...
I now have:
19mm f2.8 v1
19mm f2.8 v2
24mm f2.8
24mm f2.8 ROM
28mm f2.8 v2
2x 35mm f2
50mm f2
80mm f1.4
90mm f2
100mm f2.8 APO
135mm f2.8
180mm f2.8 APO
280mm f2.8 APO
1.4x APO extender

At what point will the crazyness stop? :)

I will probably have to sell some of them to save up for some zooms... Anyone up for a mint 280mm APO with 1.4 APO extender in it's original metal case? ;)

Ive just heard about the following three lenses available in R mount.
not cheap, close to new/mint condition

19mm v1 (the big one) 2.8 900€
80mm 1.4, box, caps, warranty, etc. 1500€
100mm apo 2.8. 1500€

pm me.

If money is no object, you have to look for the 35-70 and 70-180. They're beautiful optically. And I found them mechanically on par or better with many standard cinema lenses.
I can't believe a couple of weeks ago I've been few hours late on a 70-180. And the price was incredibly fair. I called the shop asking how often they had it. 1 in the 2013, 1 in 2012, 0 in 2011, 1 in 2010, and so on...

Are you talking about the Nikon 70-180?

I have one of those in my closet. I've been using it no more than a couple of times and the lady I got it from never used it at all. She bought it for macro but never started. :)

Perhaps I should bring it out and hook it up for some motion capture. :)

Wow, nice collection! I hear yeah, every time I sell one seems like 2 more mysteriously appear :)

Speaking of which, I'm looking at the 19mms. What's your opinion between the v1 and v2? I've heard some say they prefer the look of some v1s over v2s (like the Summicron 50), even though they're not as technically sound.

I just got the 19mm V2 and have yet to test it.. I sure will and then sell the one I like the least.
My "collection" is a bit silly at the moment as I want to test them all to figure out what set I'll stick with :)

Mine is too, but finding it hard to part with any of them.

So yesterday was told that my new 35 Lux that wouldn't back focus, despite being sold as 'Like New' 1 month ago, has been repaired and should arrive tomorrow. I've also read/seen many good things about the 35 Cron so ordered one last night. Really looking forward to testing em side-by-side so I can decide which to keep... Am also curious of others' opinions who've used both. Have read and seen examples showing the Lux is stronger up close due to its floating element, and bokeh rendering has more of a bipolar quality.

Have a feeling its gonna be another tough decision... :)

I have a very rare Leica R 15mm f2.8 ASPH for sale. It is used but flawless condition and just came back from revision from Leica. If anyone is seriously interested please send me a mail. Won't be able to post pictures until tomorrow ;-).
