  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica M for narrative work?

Its probably worth mentioning that for all the 'executed' RED 1s out there that are out of warranty ... I don't think there's anything holding you back anymore from getting that IMS front plate so that you can put all sorts of lenses on your camera -- or from getting the Birger mount for that matter.

Start using the awesome glass you couldn't use before!

Allan Gordon sells the old Dalsa lenses (they went out of business), which where re-housed leica R lenses. they are fantastic, but not cheap. and i don't know if they still have some left.

I myself had a few, almost new, latest generation, R lenses sitting in my closet, and I took them to Duclos to have them put focus gears and 80mm fronts. i now use them with my 5d and get beautiful results, big improvement from my Canon L primes.
On the 5d a 24 is wide enough, so i have the 24/2.8, 35/2.0, 50/2.0, 80/1.4 and 180/2.8
I use a Leica to Canon mount i also purchased a Duclos, and it's the best i have found so far. I will post a more recent photo when i get back from Puerto Rico, but this is what they used to look like before the fronts. Now, i know that this does not really help you, since you are looking for something for a RED, but if you can use a Canon lens on a RED you can use these instead for much better results.

Roberto,
I noticed that you have a Red Nikon mount in one of your pictures. I also had barrel rotation when pulling focus until I changed over to the Optitek mount. It is a positive lock, and there is no movement what so ever between the lens and camera. Love it.

If you have shots that show the difference between them would be great.

Ahh! I saw those there a few months ago and wanted them so bad, this is as close to buying a PV primo as you can get- Dan Sasaki even made them. They seem expensive but really a STEAL and all cover FF35 as far as I know.

Hi Roberto,

Is it just the rotation that attracts you or the different aesthetic of the lenses?

Don't the ZF lenses have a throw of about 270 degrees which seems plenty.

Rob

My attraction to Leica is aesthetic, as well as high IQ/aesthetic at big apertures. Focus throw is a whole different thing.

For narrative I don't think I would consider using the still Leicas, just because of the small barrels. I think it would get me nasty looks from the AC's no matter how long the throw may be. Even if you had them fitted with nice Duclos gears, which would solve the FF problem, cause what happens when you want to throw your hand in there? I bet many will tell me how they pull with FF gears on their Nikons or even on they gorgeous Leicas, but I think I'd rather rent RPPs at that point... then again I don't 1st AC for a living, so I should probably stfu. :)

I'm "covering" all my Leica R with 1st AC friendly gears and "pl" mount (flange distance is still Leica and focus throw too). Here's a render - final stuff in about 3 weeks:)

That's a great move Brian.

Any provision for focus marks?

This is slightly off topic but I have to ask one question.

I've been reading up on Leica lenses and I came across this Leitax website.
I read through its mount change instructions and there is this ball bearing thing that puzzles me.

Having never taken apart any lens before, what is the significance of the ball bearing?

The ball bearing is the source of the clicks in the aperture ring. Removing and lubricating it will give the aperture ring a smooth, seamless rotation.

...It will also detonate the lens upon removal. ;)

@ Matthew Duclos

Thanks for the explanation!

Oh dear...Better get the defusal kit ready before dismantling the lens :)
