  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leaving Las Vegas - Cinegear 2017

Are all the brands at Cinegear? Ie Cooke, Leica, Zeiss, Canon, Wooden, SmallHD, Teradek, etc?

If they are....may as well skip NAB!!!

yes they are, and much more film based companies that never make it to NAB mainly because their systems are too big or too elaborate to travel for just a show.
its more personable too, talked to ryan at wooden camera for a long time, great conversations with paul at duclos and an amazing rep at cooke, hung out with a bunch of ASC guys, had beers, good times, wish i could go back today.
funny to me that exhibits like canon were some of the least crowded, it's much for geared for real film making then broadcast.

Great. Sold. I actually found NAB sort of overwhelming, and it was a real challenge to find the booths I really wanted to visit. There were so many I skipped...

Is Cinegear all production focused? Or any post-production options? I usually travel to NAB with an editor who couldn't care less about production gear, while I get more out of the production side of things.

We haven't displayed at NAB in quite awhile - got expensive and a little too overpacked with unrelated stuff.

And Dive shows don't work for us anymore as they aren't in the market for the really high end camera housings and GoPro killed the lower end. Cinegear looks like a great option - will look into displaying next year.

I don't necessarily need a full booth - if any other manufacturers would like to split one send me an email or PM.

What are the dates for 2017 - didn't see them on their website. (www.cinegearexpo.com)

The exhibitor list seems to be entirely filled with production focused stuff.

Would be really cool if post was included at some point, cause that's one thing I found really nice about NAB. Being able to talk to the post and production people all at the same event. That would really sell me on this personally, as it would take care of all of my needs, plus the more chill environment people have mentioned with less suits all over the place such as is the case with NAB.

In my small world, yes. But I'd like to get your thoughts and why you think otherwise.

I don't see any of the post software/hardware vendors on this list that I often spend a lot of time talking to at NAB, which makes it a valuable trip for me. Granted, it's called Cine Gear, so it makes sense why that would be the case. But that's where I'm seeing the difference between production and post as far as this is concerned. I'm all ears to hear what you think.

Color grading
Creating dailies for editorial and viewing
Creating bins and organizing materials for editorial
Archiving original files to LTO tape or similar
Uploading viewing copies to digital dailies services
Creating shot pulls for VFX

On any given production, any of these tasks might be handled by production personnel, or they might be handled by post personnel, depending on how the project is crewed and budgeted.

Does that make my case? :undecided:

Not trying to be argumentative Mike, just digging for specifics and definitions. What tasks are done where and by whom and what their job titles/qualifications are/should be. What are some of the workflows that are gaining popularity, or even ubiquity, in your sphere?

As I have advocated for several years, the vendor responsible for creating the final contracted deliverables should be the one who hires/supervises an on set "extension of post" like a DIT (generic). For studio/network level shows, there have been cultural expectations and union jurisdiction issues mixed into the definition of production vs post. Hearing the perspective of someone with your particular job title, experience and intelligence was my quest.

BTW, does the HPA (Hollywood Post Alliance) consider color grading a production task, or the domain of "post"? (Meant to be provocative, not snarky)

I think Red should show at both shows. Nab and Cinegear have overlap in audience demographics but Cinegear is mainly for film style shooters. Nab is made up of a broader audience. I first discovered Red at NAB 2006 when I was there to check out Post production and visual effects solutions. I had no intent on buying a camera but I was blown away buy their demo and left the show with a deposit for a Red One. I think Cinegear is more of a like minded crowed. But Nab is a unique opportunity for Red to reach potential buyers in broader and less obvious markets. Red could scale back their NAB both or maybe have smaller booths spread through out the different halls. But I do think its a great idea to show at Cinegear and if you can only make one show Cinegear is the one.
 
It is also worth pointing out that the food selection is much better at Cinegear. I will take the Korean BBQ taco's over Nathan's hot dogs any day! There are several food trucks present for lunch each day. Just bring sunscreen or a hat since a lot of vendors are outside and it was in the upper 90s on Friday this year! The show is much smaller and far more personal. Only downer is the lack of parking in the area.

NAB is expensive! If you get a lot of sales from the show, which BMD says they do, then it is worth exhibiting. Personally I like HPA, SMPTE and Cinegear much more than NAB. As an exhibitor, I have had to be there from Sunday through Friday and I don't know how many more times I can do that. I like three days in Vegas, which includes the arriving and departing days.
 
Well I know this is a really late reply, just got back home from both Infocomm and Cinegear. I too was surprised to not see Red at Cinegear. From what I have been told that show certainly has grown. Look forward to seeing you there next year.
