RED Support,
My RED1390 LCD connector has worked its way loose. The cable and the connection to the camera appear OK, but the LCD connector is loose. Is this something I can fix myself?

I am in the middle of a feature shoot, so I need an expeditious reply. I called support last week, but they never responded. In fact, they never respond to any of my inquiries.

I tried to log a tech support call on the website but it wanted a log file. Where is the log file? What does the log file have to do with a hardware issue?

Thank you, John

This will most likely void you warenty on the lcd:
-open the lcd housing
-carfully remove the screws from the board
-lift the board, see the loose nut
-loosen some more, but a drop of glue on the tread (wood glue will do)
-tighten the nut
-rebuild

Cheers

I have the same problem with mine; so does my friend Bob. I emailed Brent last week to inquire about this and was waiting. I figured that it was something simple like a retaining nut. A drop of Threadlocker is what this calls for...
Is it one of the ABS plastic-housed monitors? Both of these are. Just curious.
Cheers,
Harry

I had to send a log file with a support ticket as well, even though it was about the battery charger! You will find the log file on the hard drive or CF card with your footage. Just put it on there as it makes the whole thing work!

Good luck.

Jim

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I am making sure the Lemo connector assembly procedures within the LCD are re-evaluated to try to make this better.

thinktank, if you don't get a reply for some reason, just feel free to PM me.

Hi Brent

Just so you know - this applies to the EVF too. 2 that I've used have been loose from when it was received so I dismantled and tightened accordingly.

I've also had similar problems with most of my EVF/LCD cables where the back part of the LEMO works itself loose.

I'm in the UK so maybe it was transport vibration..

I have experienced this same issue with LCD and the cap to one of the lemo cables did come loose as well.

Thanks for looking into this Brent!

I think the answer must be to add a bit of threadlocker in the assembly procedure.
I'll be cracking my LCD open tomorrow...
Cheers,
H.

Harry, let us know how that works out. Are you using Permatex and if so what version of it. I also have to replace a thread in the extension handle. I might try threadlocker for that too.

re: LCD connector loose

Thanks to all of you for your prompt replies to my loose LCD connector issue. Following Jim jimhare's advice, I sent in a RED Tech Support message and attached a camera "log" file (see note below).

Tech Support promptly responded. The Support person wrote "To protect your warranty the LCD fix would have to be done here by our techs." I plan to send it back to RED, but will file Brian's fix for future reference.

Note: Re sending a message to RED Tech Support. There is no such thing as a ".log" file, however it looks like either the of the digital magazine ".profile" files will do. These should be attached from either the camera CF card or the RED-DRIVE™, I don't think copies from your off-camera storage will do.

Hey guys.
I voided the LCD warranty this morning and it seemed to go well. There are 4 Phillips screws that hold the case together. There are 2 short and 2 long (the case has a different thickness top and bottom) Once they are removed the LCD splits in half. The screen slips free from the top buttons at an angle. Now on one side is the bezel and screen, on the other the rear shell and guts. The power cable from the board to the screen is a simple 2-pin computer connector, which I disconnected. There is also a delicate ribbon cable (picture?) that had enough slack so I did not remove it. 5 screws secure the board, which has a hole that the wires from the Lemo thread through. There is a large multi-pin computer connector on the board for these Lemo wires but I left that alone. Once the screws are out, the board can be gently guided through the bundled wires to reveal the back of the Lemo. It's just a simple nut with a lock washer. I coated the threads with the blue (medium strength) Threadlocker brand formula, tightened it up and reversed the procedure. The power cable needs to be threaded carefully back in the race or it could be crimped by the case.
I did have a scare when I plugged in the LCD. Everything was red, with green edges! ;(
I just needed to re-seat the multi-pin connector from the Lemo (I must have jostled it too much when removing the board)
Anyway, hopefully that's that. Proceed at your own risk. I'm sure the folks at Red would have fixed it fine too.
Cheers,
Harry

It seems strange that the support site requires a log file or it won't allow you to submit. I can think of many issues that have absolutely nothing to do with how the camera records to the media.

Next time, just send them this:
