  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lcd/accessories price

Well, boo-hoo, the price went up a couple hundred bucks. Technically it didn't, you just aren't getting as much FOR FREE as you thought. Seriously, I imagine that most of the guys/gals on this forum are budget conscious just like myself - we'd all be purchasing Vipers if we weren't. This kind of price flux is very common in a pre-release product (or should I say products). And are your forgetting that those of you that have Camera reservations are getting a $2500 CREDIT towards accessory purchases?! When did Sony or Panasonic ever offer that?!? SO MAN UP and give the Red Team a break!

When Will The Playground Fight Be Over?

When Will The Playground Fight Be Over?

Wow... I'm staggered to see this thread descend to such a level of banality.

The fact is, Jim Jannard is a businessman (not a superhero or everybody's buddy) and he can do what he likes, when he likes. Put prices up. Put prices down. Add things. Take things away. He owes nobody anything. If you don't like what he's offering, like any consumer, you can spend your dollars somewhere else (and he'll even give your money back to make it easy). That's business.

Having said all that... I don't like being "punished" because somebody else in the class has been naughty.

Please Jim, could you keep the information channels open so that professionals making decisions about purchases that affect their businesses can make informed choices. I know many, many people who read this board would appreciate it – especially those of us who do not have reservations and who won't be getting any "bonuses" that we won't be paying for.

There can be few reservation holders who are not pro-red supporters.

All of us like to and enjoy getting more news, whatever that news may be.

The price announcements gave all of us a guidline to what we expected.

Since i am a beginner (possibly the only one!) i am under no illusions as to what the eventual price will be to operate my red camera with the necessary accessories. When i am kitted out i reckon i will have spent $60,000. For that i get a great set of tools to enable me to do the projects i want to do. My projects will succeed or fail on my ability, creativity and so forth. An almost impossible task, but i love a challange!

I read posts on other forums and yes i hear some of the hugely biased anti-red feelings that have been building up over this past 12 months on specific forums. Red have been brilliant right through this whole period. I cannot thank them enough.

There are times when we think these guys cannot possibly be human, such a talented group of guys. On the odd rare ocassions some of us forget that they are human afterall and they do make the odd error (out of thousands that went right). I am as guilty as anyone else on that score. Many of us are protective of red and hate to see "the anti-red brigade" be given substance to their argument.

I see no hecklers or naysayers on this thread. I see no anti-red supporters.

We all love what red is doing and yes we all have to cut them some slack. But please allow constructive comments good or bad to be aired. It keeps red on its toes and makes them even more competitive. That will ensure they become the best camera company in the world.

Red team are now under greater pressure to produce at NAB, possibly more so than any other camera company has ever been. It is in all of our interests that the maximum number of reservations are indeed taken up. That alone will silence the dis-believers. The specs and prices will ensure that happens.

Maybe we should all cut them slack for this next fortnight and let them got on with things.

A wee glimpse pre-NAB would be appreciated though:biggrin:

Jim and RED team are going to be BUSY! I don't mind them going dark at all. Let them focus on finishing RED!

If they go quiet because they're busy, that's fine. If they go quiet because of the misplaced comments of a few forum members, that's another story!

I got the impression that Jim was pulling the curtain down because of the latter.

What the hell's going on? You leave the forum for a short while and now Jim's talking about doing dark? wha!?!?!

This all seems a little bizarre to me, couldn't care less about the price change but given the open discussion base that Red have themselves encouraged as a means of promotion I can't see why it would be so unexpected that there is some flak if people don't like something? Maybe the original comments weren't great but they were in essence justified. There is and never has been any question of what Red is doing is simply magnificent and truly appreciated, but effectively censoring an entire community because some people speak out against an unannounced and then unconfirmed price change seems a little negative.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to tread on anyone's feet by writing this (And hope and pray it isn't taken as an attack), and I would happily read the riot act to others, as many have, about mouthing of because it has cost the community the opportunity to learn more in the process of the cameras build, but it somehow doesn't seem like a very healthy community if everything written has to be pro-red and never negative. Afterall it's this reason that people refer to users of this forum as RedHeads or whatever and this always bugs the hell out of me, far more than any price change by a couple of hundred bucks.

Jim I hope that you continue as you have begun and be as open and honest about the process. And if something like this small matter falls under your radar and doesn't get picked up straight away then I can assure you most if not all will always forgive any such small error by any member of your team. Keep up the good work and forget about this thread.

Well said Paul, no-one's attacking anybody and I think the posts here have all been justified and reasonable in tone - not even negative, but simply expressing discomfort at a perceived mis-handling of some price changes.

As you also say, it's not exactly a big deal that the prices have changed. I and some other users felt (misguidedly, as it now seems, but then surely that's the point of these forums, to clear up such matters?!) that the announcements from Red had been slanted in favor of the positive. It seems it was just an honest mistake by a member of the Red team. No worries, these things happen. But all that's needed is for that to be cleared up, which has now happened...

The whole issue has, as far as I'm concerned at least, been completely dealt with - it's time for everyone to put their toys back in the pram and get on with it!!!

Changing price list is not so bad!

Changing price list is not so bad!

Maybe it is more like fixing the price list on a daily basis. Before everyone gets their bowels in an uproar - just look at it and try to figure what makes sense. It probably is almost a necessity that the LCD be supplied with at least a short cable to hook to the camera since it is a proprietary connector. But did it really make sense that they gave you two different extension cables? Probably not, so it would be easy to write that off as a mistake. Should it be supplied with an an arm - maybe maybe not - everybody has their own idea of how the LCD should be mounted so maybe an a la carte arm is appropriate.

I can tell you from experience that is often harder to keep the literature/price list/website info up to date (and all saying the same thing!) than it is to design and build the stuff. Within two days of when I get my RED camera and a 10 mm Ultraprime lens, I can build an underwater housing that will be safe, secure, optically excellent and capable of making pictures I will be proud of 10 years from now. No way will I have pictures, a spec sheet, price list, website update, etc. as quickly. Some of it is just time and coordination - but there is also an element of jumping back and forth from right brain to left brain stuff, the creative to the mundane. Jim obviously has both sides working. (Jim as a former psyche major I'm curious, do you happen to be left handed or ambidextrous?)

I'm like all of you, I enjoy the tidbits when they come out, and some are even somewhat important for future decisions. But it is probably more important for the vast majority of us to have the regular input from Jim than to have a dead accurate price/spec sheet. All of us early adopters took a leap of faith last April and I for one think it is working out well.

I vote we ask Jim to keep giving us those tidbits with the understanding that we will treat them as stream of consciousness thoughts that he won't be bound to until they are solidified - at least until a grand unification a few weeks after NAB.

This is getting quite annoying! Do they change the pricelist on a daily basis?

This is extremely unprofessional. I'm disappointed, to say the least. :angry03:

Really... You could make that in two days? I can design an ecommerce website, take pictures produce a spec sheet, price list etc in two days... maybe we should talk :):):)

Re: 2 days

Re: 2 days

Paul:

I really can make the housing in two days. I like to take a little longer to tweak a few things., but we do it all the time. I got the 1st Sony FX7 on a Monday (B&H got the 1st FX7s the previous Thursday), finished the housing Tuesday afternoon and drove to Orlando that night for DEMA (the major dive industry show) that started Wednesday morning. It took about 3 or 4 days to make the 1st for the HVX200 - but that had a lot to do with my friend that owned the camera hovering over me as I worked. 30% of the housing is already made interchangeable stuff - the handle wings, backplates, domes, and sometimes the actual tube, so it is not entirely from scratch. Typically, we will do another day or two of tweaking design work for the "production" version of the housing for the more popular cameras, but the changes wouldn't affect the actual image quality. I have used that original housing a number of times, including for a recent HDNet shoot. This is for the standard cylindrical style housing. A shaped aluminum housing like the Varicam housing will take 3 to 8 weeks. I may eventually make one of that style for the RED, but actually the RED is configured very well for using the cylindrical style.

You can see what these housings look like here:

I was exaggerating a little on not being able to take the photos, etc. in 2 days - I'm not a complete idiot. What typically happens is it gets put on the procrastinatable (like that?) pile of things to do like bills, invoices, taxes, emails, and it is easy to make mistakes, omissions, etc. So I am always open to {affordable} assistance.

Really... You could make that in two days? I can design an ecommerce website, take pictures produce a spec sheet, price list etc in two days... maybe we should talk :):):)

Just be thankful you don't live in Zimbabwe where inflation runs in the thousands of percent, prices rise by the hour, and shoppers have to ensure they keep ahead of the guy with the sticker machine as they move down the aisles.

Of course, I wouldn't complain if Jim told us the Red prices were Zimbabwe dollars.

Hey, maybe some day UNICEF will get into the 4k camera business.

I don't care if they hike the prices up another $1,000, I just want to get me some 4K goodness!

It's actually good that RED's going dark until NAB, wouldn't want to slip and spoil any of the remaining secrets now would they?:gun:

:pirate: yar har.......

With some foresight I have archived all price list versions.
This is the history of the LCD Screen:[/IMG]

Thank god you posted this. I thought I was going insane after remembering the accessories list and their corresponding prices, then checking it once more and thinking...hey, wait a minute!

Yeesh,

Jim - Just to say I didn't start this thread to cause any undue grief. Just on a tight budget, so wanted to clarify the fiddly little details. In the grand scheme of things they don't matter much to be honest. But there's so many people now looking at this project through a macro lens, that maybe it is a good idea to go dark till NAB, and just concentrate on what's important, rather than worrying about what people are saying on the internet. If prices are likely to change there's no point in trying to budget it now anyway...

Look forward to seeing the images this camera creates. I hope so very much that it's in line with my expectations. Eveything else is irrelevant until the results are visible!

Best of luck,
Ruairi

Gotta feel a bit for Ruairi who started this thread with a very legitimate, honest, polite question about pricing. Obviously it wasn't Ruairi who stirred up the hornet's nest. A few people just got a bit cranky over a minor misprint on Red's price list--a misprint which really can't be all that surprising given the speed and thought-to-be-impossible goals for Red's roll-out.
