  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Latest Scarlet Beta firmware = 5K FF 24fps!!! @ 9:1 Compression

If true, Scarlet MX w/ 5K capability would certainly be one of most talked about "releases" of NAB, and...in a blink of an eye...Scarlet MX would have trumped all 4K cameras announced this week.

RED would have defeated them all with a simple "press of a button"!

Also be a tremendous validation of RED tech...if a 3 year old camera could do this.

Would speaks volumes of how good DRAGON must be...

Wish I had some way to prove that the crappy cell phone photo is of my Scarlet-X. ...

In Menu>> Settings> Setup> Key> Keymapping -- there is an option to have a key for screen-shots. :o)

Will not prove more, but it is perhaps good to know.

I will post the log file Thursday night. I think, from my experience, that sustained capture at these framerates would be unstable for sure, even with some extensive work on the feature. I'm no engineer but I think the most you can hope for at any point is a stable 4.5k WS, 25fps sustained at decent compression. I bet longer runs of what I ran into would have resulted in dropped frames and the like. I actually think the first R3D may have been cut a few frames short.

To the few of you still skeptical about whether the R3Ds are showing the correct framerates... The first one should look good. The second one is the same framerate with a smaller shutter angle, thus will look choppy. If the final one doesn't look overcranked to you, well, all I can say is I know how fast my hand was moving if you would like to take my word for it. That's 39fps for sure.

Lastly, to Jarred and the rest of the RED team, I hope I haven't misled any of your customers too much and thrown some sort of wrench in your operation. I posted this thread out of excitement, thinking it was an actual feature you included. Then quickly realized I stumbled across something I wasn't supposed to. Did not want to start a conspiracy thread. I trust you guys have refrained from including this merely because it's too unstable to be used in production. Basically your reasons must be valid, beyond what we as users can discern from 3 crappy shots I took in my disbelief. Hopefully some degree of increased performance can still be squeezed out of the Scarlet, but I personally don't expect 5K 24fps sustained at any point. I know pushing the cam to its breaking point is probably not a good way to achieve anything stable.

I'll gladly take 4.5K @ 24 as standard. Anything that gets lesser crop of the sensor... :)
But if not : I'm very happy with little Mathilda as she is now - loving all the features through firmware updates already!!!

For only seconds of recording time, 24fps doesn't make much sense. So it all depends on how stable they can get it.
I'm really glad that Jarred has been open about this.

Can't agree more.

I've bought a 4k-camera and it's still wonderful, makes me happy every time i use it. And it's already so much better than when i bought it, RED's fw-updates are exceptional. A Scarlet-X/MX is still ahead of all the newer 4k-players if you look closer.

That being said, this glitch in the matrix woke us all up again, reminded us of every Scarlet-Users little dream. I'm glad RED is looking into it and Jarred being so open about it. Let's see what they can do.

I would of done the same Aria... don't feel bad one bit. I already hinted about the burst capabilities in another thread before you posted this all so you are 100% in the clear.

You had a glimpse into the deep deep corners of our engineering exploration. As long as you guys don't have any expectations from seeing these little tests I am completely fine sharing the process with you.

Heh heh heh...

Burst to the left, Burst to the right. Unfortunately you can't Burst all night.

With enough energy, fluids and aphrodisiacs you might be surprised what can be achieved. More importantly, she may be surprised, ;-)

This is killer. Love that things are always being pushed

Yes, i would really love to hear about this stuff from time to time, just a little bit like in the old days. It was always great to read about whats going on in your labs. Thank you Jarred.

Thanks Jarred, makes me feel a lot better. Had some sort of guilt about this because I thought it'd rekindled the whole "artificially crippled Scarlet" riot, but I don't think this is the case. If you ask me, it actually serves more to understand why we DON'T have 5K more than anything (potentially unstable), but also shows that perhaps a little tiny bit more is possible, and yet you've already really gone a long way to get us the most out of the hardware already. This is the RED I know. This openness is one reason why so many of us always thought this company was so special. So thanks for doing what you do.

Think you've already caught the bug but once again, log file coming Thursday night when I return from Vegas. It's turning out to be an exciting NAB!

Aria, you should get a badge or t-shirt for being the first, maybe only one ever, who shot 5k motion with a Scarlet-X/MX. ;)

All you need to do is break open a Scarlet and an Epic to see they are not the same... Different boards, Different Memory, different hardware. Nothing to hide.

Hmmm, i think i prefer to just trust your words, no need to verify that. :)

I've always been tempted to take my cam apart. In fact I think my Scarlet is the only peice of equipment I own I haven't actually taken apart ha. Really ticked my parents off back in the day as puting things back together and having them still work took a few years to master. I'm no slouch now though. I might be the first person to bring a Kindle Fire 8.9 back from a hard brick by soldering leads directly to the emmc and flashing the chip directly lol. Maybe in ten years or so when I have a couple of Epic Hydras (multi cam arrays capable of 3,000fps at 40K) I'll install Steam on my Scarlet and have a crazy badass gaming console ;D
