Just before PPro Cs5 ships,
1. collapse timeline. The is a new feature in PPro that exists in FCP, "close Gap". I wish Adobe would extend this feature to collapse all tracks down to a user specified amount of tracks, or default to tracks one and two.
many of us that cut music videos with multiple angles, shots, takes, etc, usually end up with about 15 tracks, after the cut, I usually have to go back and clean up the time line by moving all the edited sub clips to tracks 1 & 2. Anything that will appear in the program window stays. This comes in very handy when you open a ppro project in AE for efx.
Can this be automated to collapse all in the timeline to show only footage in the program window?.
Can it also be automated to take out all unused clips?

2. in AE can we get an updated thumbnails feature like Stu's Rebel CC. When color correcting can we be able to double click on the thumbnail to be taken to the corresponding footage layer on the time line?

This cant be too much to ask, since cs5 is shipping in may

Simply right click on the video or audio track header and choose delete tracks. A box will pop up and ask if you want to delete all empty tracks... is that what you mean? I use it all the time already.

he means if you have ur video tracks staggered, and you end up with 15 video tracks but all with a lot of empty space, a simple click of a button will bring those 15 tracks down to a few tracks so your timeline looks neater and nicer.

no, that's not what I meant at at all.,
Collapse tracks would be something like nesting all the tracks to tracks 1 & 2,

u could always subclip down your timeline...

That's what I do right now, and it works only for sub-cliping,

Thanks for clarifying the feature request.

For audio tracks anyway... you could bring your track(s) into soundbooth to edit and when you bring them back into premiere they will appear collapsed into one track on the timeline. Then just select the track again and choose edit original or edit in soundbooth and you will see all the tracks as they originally were to edit them more in soudbooth if needed. Click on save and the changes get sent back to premiere where you only have one audio track to deal with....

For video don't forget you can create another sequence (or timeline) and drag the old sequence into it. Now you only have one audio and video track. Any changes made in the original sequence would be immediately updated in the new sequence. Sort of like pre-composing in after effects.

oh cool, i'll have to check that out.

If I understand correctly, you can do that by selecting all the clips that you want to put in one track, than right click and choose "nest". All the selected clips will collapse to one track.
If you want to control the tracks not just the clips, let's say yo have 15 tracks and you want only two tracks, zoom out the timeline at the maximum, hit ~ while hovering the pointer over the timeline to see all the tracks, select all clips between track 7-15, then right click then click "Nest". Do the same for tracks 1-6 and you will end with only two tracks.

Still does not solve the messy problem. Remember once you open your sequence in AE, every sub clip has its own track. For a music video of feature film, that's literally hundreds of tracks

Oh really! wow i'll try that I never knew that existed.
Thanks a lot. By the way how is your name pronounced, is it like kaj-tim or Kuj-tim? its a cool name

As about after effects try to import the sequence using dinamic link, not by importing the premiere project. That will end you with only one track in after effects.

Thanks.. My name is pronounced "Kuytim".. "J" in my language is pronounced as "Y" in English.

There are two ways to import Premiere projects in After Effects.
1- File - Adobe Dynamic Link - import Premiere pro Sequence: This opens the sequence in one track.
2- File - import - import Premiere Pro Project: This opens every clip in its own track.

Some people just confuse between them. Both ways are useful for different purposes.

#2, i would rather import the whole project with sub-clips to work on them on individual tracks, but AE imports EVERYTHING!!. You previously suggested technique is just what I needed. Thanks. In my workflow I use Rebel CC's thumbnail viewer, its very useful to see every track as its own thumbnail like you would see it in Smoke.

Many ways...

Many ways...

There are other options as well. When you import a ppro sequence into AE you can select sub sequences in the import dialog. Or just copy and paste the bits you want from a PPro Sequence to an AE Comp. (you can go from project to project as well or from AE to PPro if you want to go back). Drag and Drop if you want to create a dynamiclink instead of a copy. Enjoy.

Cheers

Dave

well for music videos and so on, i tend to multipclip everything, but is what you want more like a video mixdown option like Avid has? Cause I've been wishing for that for so long now in FCP. I still think a simple 1 click button to "bring down your tracks" to fill up the empty space will solve 80% of what you want. Just to consolidate all the empty spacing with so many video tracks staggered and stacked.

I just try to stay as organized as possible ahead of time, it's easy to get messy in FCP. It may be more time consuming, but I consider it "your spending that time cleaning it up later anyway, what's the difference?"

and yes, let's hope for a feature like that in any of these new NLE's

maybe so Tom. why not shoot them an email? but really, let's think about it. and by the way I love adobe's products. but they've got a gigantic wheel rolling with shipping dates next month. that wheel's not stopping. do you really think they're going to make a single change at this point? my guess: all the products are sitting in cellophane at the warehouses ready to go. adobe has an entirely different process and model than red - they don't do things last minute. this software has probably been pretty much locked down for months, awaiting the strategic time for release based on marketing.

so yeah, it's a great idea. but that's beside the point.
