The ethics of gang/gun themed hip-hop (and its roots/history) should best be left for ANOTHER thread (if any at all).

Why ?

How would that help ?

Keith was hired to do a job, and used a RED camera.

Yes, that is understood by the first post.

The rest apparently still isn't by some.

That's as far as this conversation should go.

You decide where a conversation should go ?

This piece was NOT his vision - it was the director and artists.

Did someone say it was ?

There is no vision here whatsoever.

Just a bunch of poor souls doing what they saw on TV and recycling something from 20 years ago because their mindset is shaped to perceive it as their identity and their maximum.

Poor American neighborhoods are SATURATED in guns. That's a reality.

Guess what helps (and pushes ) in that direction.

As are poor neighborhoods AROUND THE WORLD.

No. Not really.

Only in beehives where people are pushed to live like animals and served the ideas, motivation and means.

Poverty and violence go hand in hand.

Even more when the latter is served in the box and consumed by developing minds.

You may not LIKE that truth. But it exists.

Yes it does, Nick.

And it gets to hurt when it eventually unfolds, bursting the reality bubble.

To quote Picasso, "Art is the Lie that tells the truth".

A song about a gun.
By an artist coming from the streets.
1996.

Inquiring minds, caring for the neighborhoods, might want to listen to the lyrics.

First of all Raj Dye the personal attack is not called for and very much not appreciated. You don't know me and my values or my age sonny. Sell out my community? I make documentaries on little known historical figures in African American history for museums. I never attacked anyone on this thread. Grow up and handle this like a professional.

I don't post much and now I see why many people don't! My first MV in 6 years and you make it about your view of what's wrong with the world. I'm screwing up the world! Me? Grow up! This was about taking a gig, shooting all day at 120fps, not shooting the way I wanted under interesting conditions and being professional.

This thread could have gone technical about the shoot but you and others made it about a social commentary. I don't come to REDUSER for social commentary! I come here for RED camera information and view peoples work. If I don't like their work I do the professional thing and don't comment or find some good aspects of what they did. Their is never a need for personal attacks on this site!

So I'm taking it from your response you would have just turned down the job or walked off the set? You could have just said I don't like the subject matter and I would not have done the shoot. That's an adult way of handling this thread. Best of luck to you.

Steve D. I did not cut the film. I don't know what they used on the B&W. I was a day hire only. Oh with that in mind the MV could have been cut without the guns or the artists sons in it. I had no control over that but I highly doubt that he would take his sons out of his video. The song is about where he lives and how he lives. You view it they live it.

Let's cut the crap - either:

1) Sue Keith!

or

2) STFU!

Number 2, wanna bet?

I guess I'll be the first mod to chime in here though I'm miles away and in a different time zone.

Look. I don't want to take out the ban hammer.

Be civil. There's a great deal of content shot worldwide that you will or will not agree with.

This is first and foremost a RED camera forum. Social commentary isn't exactly in bounds, usually ever. Politics as well for that matter. Keep it to the shoot, the gear, the technique, the craft, etc.... And it must be that time of the year to reiterate a specific no go, absolutely no personal attacks.

Be professionals.

My 12 year old nephew sticks his middle finger up in selfies he takes......these are grown(?) men? Pathetic.

It makes me sad this has had 10M views.

I think I commented the first time you posted this, Keith, but I'll say again this is excellent work. I would never have known this was a last-minute job. It's pretty amazing to think 10 million views... So many people!

These are superb music videos from a golden era... Thanks for sharing them here too! I certainly can tell there is a difference between the content of the originally posted artist, and what is portrayed here - however, there may be some who would say they are exactly the same thing and not notice the difference, because there is some "mischief" portrayed in many of these as well.

I find it disturbing however that Keith was being attacked for sharing and told that he should have walked off set.

I'll quote another poster here who said "you do you"

I categorize this type of film making with Porn. Except . . . at least in Porn you don't have 8 year olds dancing in it like this piece of trash
I think filmmakers should have the creative freedom to make the films they want to make. I don't believe in censorship of any kind. I totally concede that this isn't something I want to see, but I wouldn't get in the way of a creative filmmaker who makes this choice.

Censorship is not the answer, education is. Censorship chokes, applies external force which automatically creates internal opposition. Education expands mind, builds awareness and abilities, further optimizing creative works. Trimming the weeds won't stop them from growing again. There is no need to censor the fruits if the proper seeds are planted in the start.

In a creative domain there is this narcissistic illusion that anyone can blurb out anything out of his/hers head, unfiltered, unshaped, and just label it "art", which others should absorb in their mind and heart for some reason. Overwhelming feeling of self-importance because simple creative desire and tools at hand somehow create value, to be consumed by others. With no responsibility whatsoever and with a similar principle to workings of a bladder and bowels. Of a small child.

"As long as my plate is full, I don't care where my crap ends up or where my plate came from".

Principle generally implemented in many aspects of today's life, which leads to a society eventually feeding of its own feces, completely clueless why the re-occurring outbreaks of illnesses.

Masterpieces are not masterpieces because some just happened to be born talented and spat out through a whim what came to them, they are masterpieces because some took the talent and on top of that despite all the challenges invested huge emotional and mental resources in perfecting what they expressed and how they expressed it, so the creative work they left behind actually enriched those who consume it and the culture growing out of it.

If there are less privileged, unable to perceive and affect some things due to environment affecting their lives, those privileged to see the negative elements and their outcome, with an opportunity to affect things have a responsibility to do it and give a hand. Sitting passively and doing nothing is only propagating the current state of society, which is extremely low. The responsibility for the bad state is not in those unable to push themselves up, it lies in those who can pull them up but don't do shit.

The potential of an open community is in interchange of experiences, which enables self-balancing of society. Segregation, compartmentalization and separation of any sorts prevents this, keeping each segment of society in a closed box. With its inhabitants blind to the world outside yet convinced their box is all there is because wallpapers make it seem that way. Living in a self-resetting limbo made of endless loop of mistakes.

Fusion, interaction and exchange of ideas and criticism enables evolution of arts and crafts.
Evolution of arts and crafts enables evolution of society.

This is possible only if there is a critical mass aware that everyone is not an isolated island but an intrinsic part of the living, breathing whole.

“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

C.G.J.

This is super tame as far as Rap videos go. The haters in this thread make me really sad, there is no place on these forums.

Nice work Keith, especially for a last minute job.

I agree with this 100%.

I have really underestimated the amount of low-vibrational consciousness among out community here on RedUser. I mean they are literally giving you the finger and pointing a gun at you and mock-firing it. The reaction is:

Nice work Keith

I'm dumbfounded really. I don't think of myself as some kind of high-vibrational spiritual entity. I'm just someone with a basic common sense. I don't think of myself as a better or more artistic than persons here. But I just feel I am looking into the void here with a lot of the comments. There is a total void of artistic discernment, a total void of even a basic moral sensibility and human compassion, not among all people posting, but many.

No one here is calling for censorship or claiming this is illegal. So why the comments such as?

I'm not saying that it is illegal Šabović Adis. I am saying that it has no artistic value. I am saying that it has less than zero artistic value really. I am saying that this is harmful for children and other living things to watch and absorb this material. That is my strongly held opinion.

Josh Wilkinson, if reading these comments makes you sad, then please know that watching OP video makes me sad. So you are sad and I am sad. Don't you think there is something wrong here in that case? We are both sitting around very sad staring at our computer screens. Why is that? If the answer you come up with is that I'm a "hater" then you need to reflect more on this, because I can tell you as I write this there is not hatred in my heart.

Raj you still never apologized for the personal attack. Un called for. You can dislike my work, I'm a Director/DP and that's part of the trade but the attack was personal. Your rage should find another place or person. It's a big world out there I wish you luck of your crusade.

It's a delicate subject and it is normal for colleagues to stand by their fellow man, and criticism easily gets interpreted personally. Everyone has good intentions, the perspectives and means differ. With time different perspectives merge into a wider picture and evolved means improve the expression.

When the normal human desire to stand by your fellow man gets more based on perception of a "fellow man" which reaches further, spatially and temporally, things like these are likely to reduce.

But I just feel I am looking into the void here with a lot of the comments. There is a total void of artistic discernment, a total void of even a basic moral sensibility and human compassion, not among all people posting, but many.

See beyond the results of defense mechanisms.

Raj "Patrick and Keith, you would sell you your own community, you would sell out your own human race. That is what is truly pathetic."

That was a personal attack for which he is not man enough to own up to or just believes he has the right to demean others. No room for that on REDUSER. We will agree to disagree about the work but showing a lack of respect for your fellow man and REDUSER is not getting a pass. I have spent enough time on this. Thanks to those who had positive or constructive comments. Peace
