  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi.

I am now on build 3.3.14 on my Scarlet. And needs audio line-in for a job coming up. I do not have the PRO I/O-module. And needs to work without it. Camerasize matters...

Who recalls what latest build had mic/line-in? And not just mic-in like it does now on the latest version.
Did fw 3.2.21 have it? I don´t recall...

Thanks in advance.

The epic and scarlet brain is and always will be mic in.

RED has never stated a firmware build will change this.

On the brain it's Mic level in ONLY.

Not true- You can feed it an unbalanced line level signal just fine. Have been doing it since day 1 and it works beautifully with my line level camera hop.

I have done this to, earlier. But now, with build 3.3.14, this option is gone. As far as I can see.
Multiple colleagues have commented the same. That´s why I wanted to check this on the forum.

What build are you on Doug?

What mixer are you feeding the unbalanced line level from?

can you share your setup?

Well now I am completely confused. Like David I believed and on good authority that the brain will NOT accept a line level signal in without significant attenuation. Anyone in a position of authority prepared to elaborate?

Ahh, so is it actually line level in at all? I have certainly sent a line level signal from my 744T to the mic inputs but it has to be attenuated by at least -20db to be useful.

No, it's mic level. If you attenuate by about -20dB or -30dB coming into this jack, and then adjust it at the camera, you can get satisfactory results without fear of overload. I wouldn't feed a normal line into it, however. I also hard-limit the scratch feed going to the camera so that it doesn't go over about -5dBfs, which is typically pretty safe.

So you feed it an attenuated line level signal and you want to tell me that EPIC accepts line level in...

Let's get clear that the EPIC and Scarlet accept MIC level in.

Hi,

I'm actually 1st AC on a short movie, and for this one the director wanted the sound directly on the red.
So the soundman just send us something in it (with the simple 3,5 jack in front of the red).
In redcine X we can heard the sound but in playback, directly with the camera we have nothing.
Not a sound, not a single mouvement on the toolbar.

My question is, can we listen the take in playback mode?

Manu,

What build are you on?
You have audio playback with the release fw v3.3.15.

Thanks for stepping in and educating all of us, David. MIC level ONLY. Period.

FWIW, I find it baffling that EPIC and Scarlet don't only accept line level in when the brain only has 1/8" inputs. Professional mic inputs have balanced, locking connections.

If the expectation is that audio needs to be recorded separately (as is the case with most all cinema cameras), a simple on-board scratch mic would have been a nice addition.
