"That's not a knife. This is a knife."

The sensor is slightly wider than Monstro, and does full-width 4K. The camera is about the same size as a high end DSLR, yet offers so much more per cubic inch. The sensor is not just bigger than VistaVision (or "full frame" as photographers would call it) but it is stabilized. Yes, a medium format digital camera has IBIS. It shoots at 5fps with continuous tracking AF. The files are slightly finer than a 100Mpx Phase One, yet it costs less than half.

This camera is not quite my cup of tea, but its price:performance ratio is jaw-dropping. Fujifilm believes in competition, and in kicking heads. Good! What Sony did to Nikon's and Canon's high speed DSLRs, Fujifilm did to pretty much everything from the D850 to the Phase One and Leica S. Phew!

No RAW nor 8K, but if you have a reason to prefer large format cinematography, you might want to think about this camera.

It looks like that the 4k video is a downscale and a pixel binning 50.5 million pixels (50% of the 102 million pixels resolution)

DOF just isn't shallow enough = I'm waiting for the 4x5 sensor 41,000 x 31,000 1,200 megapixel. :-)

That looks like it’s going to be the go to pro advertising still camera for sure . And, that video looks fantastic.
This might be a game changer.
Too bad it wasn’t Red.
I want one.
Thanks,
Tim

Fujifilm GFX-100 First Impressions Preview

The Fujifilm GFX-100 sounds like an impressive 102-megapixel medium format mirrorless camera with 5.5 stops of in-body image stabilization. Evelyn Drake and Dave Paul from The Camera Store had a hands-on preview of a preproduction unit to get an early feel for what this new camera will be capable of.

large format it is not..barely medium format

Thus is the tale of our industry exploring wretched terminology and standards. The film world used to be relatively simple and digital came in and borked the game.

APS designations were sensible enough, then the calamity of "Full Frame", which in the film world only used to mean the full frame of a given format.

During all the digital medium format has virtually been the wild west. As those sensors are generally costly to make in the face of the smaller sensor/broader market, companies explored a whole lot of larger than 135 still film. Quickly in that market anything wider than 36mm became medium format, which has typically been in the 40-54mm wide territory.

Film-wise we had mainly 65mm 5-perf and the larger negative of 70mm 15-perf IMAX. There's been a host of other formats in there like 65mm 8-perf and even a wider than 8-perf VistaVision transport briefly.

If I was king of the world, particularly for the motion picture infustry, I would go with + designation if something was slightly larger, which is how I handle it on my info graphics. For instance S35 means one thing, S35+ plus alludes to another, meaning bigger than S35 but smaller than VistaVision.

Alas my journey to over take the thrown was thwarted by a dragon who really disliked chairs, thrones, and really any seating technology. But I remain diligent in helping explain format sizes in an easier way and not luring people into a dungeon of "medium format" when they are only getting VV+ and not really "medium format".

That said, the camera is cool and it's need to see Fujifilm avoided the fairly populated FF35 market. Mostly my interest would be stills in this case.

I await a real challenger in this arena when it comes to digital cinema, but it's truly difficult to actually do right.

I think even attempting such a large stabilized sensor is actually an amazing feat. I wish Freefly and Red would partner to make a stabilized sensor, to alleviate the shake of run and gun... Gimbals are awesome, but (to me) the holy grail is having stable footage without a huge rig. I'd jump on this camera in a heartbeat if it had .r3d compression and shot 4k 60p.

I didn't know freefly was making stabilized sensors

They’re not... this is totally just wishful thinking on my part... but... from what I can tell from the behind the scenes videos of fuji’s R&d on this camera... it looks like the sensor is resting on a badass miniature gimbal-ish device..

If there’s one company that red has worked with that might be able to pull it off, freefly seems like it.

This looks so great and I think if the price were lower than this would be an extremely competitive option for indie filmmakers looking for something different than the norm. I know I would probably use this more than a RED Epic Dragon package for the same price range just because of the stills capabilities alone. If Sony comes out with the long rumored an A7RIV with 80mp or 100mp, then it might take the wind out of this camera's sails. However, the footage and stills out of this look outstandingly good so it's a definite rental item option in my book for the time being.

You wanna know what would also shut this down pretty quick from a film perspective? Official RED Focal Reducers (especially if they were only $500~$1000 more than non-Focal Reducer mounts)... Just saying.

Don't get me wrong, 100mp>50mp pixel binned will definitely look good. And 4k 422 outta HDMI is even better. But 5k~8k raw at MF FOV (with an extra stop of low-light for good measure) for only a grand or so more than normal would be an ace in the hole. Especially if it was DSMC1 compatible, as those kits are actually cheaper than this camera.

As for stills; yeaaaah, it's a beast. Hopefully it does to digital MF cameras (Phase One, Hassie, etc), what mirrorless did to DSLRs. Cheaper, better performing, new glass options, etc...

I am 100% confident that it will. I mean think about it. Do you really want a Phase One over this? Does a reflex VF mean so much to you that you'd pay over double the cost of the GFX? No way. This camera has more potential than any digital medium format camera out there. The one thing it doesn't have is the largest sensor available.

It will also be the wealthy amateur's tool of choice. Some may treat themselves to a Nikon D5 or a Leica S, but when they see this, they'll think again.

The sensor stablizers are actually based on voice coil motors similar to what's used on audio speakers...so maybe Bose could work with Red ;-)
