That's it RougeDP. Man, I like your style! I don't agree the business model, but I like your style! Go out with both guns blazing! YOU KIN DO IT! :)

My last entry on this thread......

I have never rented my camera. I don't rent anything that I own.

I just don't like the attitude.

There,

Done,

Please clear this one from the forum as it only makes searches for good info harder.

RougeDP, are you affiliated with OneStopRed in any way other than being a member? Do you own the site? Just wondering.

This my last entry on this as well...... but to make the searches for good info harder I would like to type: Optimo 24-290 Master Primes, segway stediacam, Optimo 16-42 and 30-80 zooms, Megan Fox, 4k stock footage and Arri wireless follow focus.

I can hook you up with any of the above.....

Yea, but... Can you hook me up with 4k stock footage of Megan Fox riding a lion, shot on a segway stedicam while using the Optimo 24-290?

Thats a tall order.... give me a couple of weeks...

the 24-290 on the Stedicam segway will be the hard part

I use to rent a JVC D9 "ENG" package from a writer. Wooden sticks, camera traveled in a suit case, which traveled on restaurant bus cart, which traveled in a 1980s Mazda hatchback. As a result I could be price competitive with the indie & corporate S-VHS/Hi8 market, but deliver better quality, which yielded bigger jobs.

Anyway, I think all of this is just part of running a business. I'm part of a prodco and our sales/producers battle this every day on the phone. Prospect, "so I love your reel, project 'x' is exactly what we want. But, the pricing is way too high, this other prodco quoted us 1/4th but, their quality is terrible and terms limiting. If you guys can do it for the same price we'll go with you." Sorry, good luck.

However, we'll take on a low budget thing if we have room, even if we loose a little money as it keeps the team busy until the next job closes. I think what Rouge is doing is smart, filling otherwise idle time with a little revenue, with the ability to filter and decline.

Posting it here, maybe not the best peer PR move.

Hey, more power to you if you can consistently get 800/day. Not sure why you compare the RED to an HVX... Completely different beasts. Most HVX renters wouldn't know what to do with a RED. You might as well compare with the rate of a generator or an automobile. Great to hear your business is "legit". Do you own a RED because you want to make heaps of money with it or is it a creative tool. Perhaps if you are only worried about enormous day rates and making money, there are other legit businesses you could be in. You could open a liquor store, a yoga studio, a doggie day-care center... etc...

AS far as the HVX/DVX - they're cameras that rent for your rate... Yes, different beasts, quite an understatement and obvious point...

I own and shoot with the RED because I can. It's a tool I use as I have been a cameraman since I was 17 in the army and have been working in the movie/TV industry since... I finally broke down to buy a camera and thanks to Jim's vision, I now own one hellava tool.

I wouldn't say I make gobs of cash, nor am I in it to become rich. But yes, I consistently get $1000/day and a fairly regular basis and after overhead I barely turn a profit. Of course I also work and pay people/rental rates that are consistent with industry norms/standards.

I'm off to catch up on this thread...

That's uncalled for. I am 100% American and sick of whiny Americans who think because they are privileged enough to afford an expensive camera, they are entitled to be at the top of the food chain. Perhaps you are charging too much for what has become a common camera.

Common sure... just like an ARRI or a Panavision and yet they still rent out for their rates... pretty common rates that are standard...

This ain't whining BTW... And by this, I mean our posts.

Spoiled Americans are the reason I like it so much in Paris and as an American myself, I am ashamed of the whiny RED owners who try feebly to price-fix in an arena you thought was exclusive but are finding out is not. You're not the coolest kid on the block anymore. LOL

You are disconnected...

Nothing to do with cool or exclusive...

If you compare the rates most of us charge to other professional camera systems you will discover there is nothing close to greed going on...

For the record... I absolutely DO NOT think most of the people here are "greedy jerks". Absolutely not! That said, those who spit venom at me because I choose to do what I want with my camera would probably be best served by asking themselves how they found themselves in a situation where what I do, has such an impact on what THEY do. If it's all about the money, well there are other ways, less sensitive to open-market/supply and demand uncertainties. I really do feel for the person who HAS TO pay his mortgage with the earnings from his RED alone.

Look, some producer sees your post and rate, or hears about it, they suddenly think that's the going rate and start looking to pay only that. Yes, in time it will work itself out and your rate will be forgotten and dah dah dah.... But in the meantime, we have to deal with even cheaper producers... not fun.

And those of us who pay our bills - probably not because of the RED. It helps sure but most of us probably had jobs/clients/etc strictly based on our talents and experience (without owning gear or at least prior to RED ownership).

Almost caught up...

Hi,

The rental business has always stabalised in the 0.5-1% per day range, when the rate is higher more people enter the market & the price falls to the point where people go bankrupt, then the price rises a bit. Nothing new, just more people hoping to become millionaires in the first year of owning a RED one camera.

Stephen

I think you're somewhat correct, in terms of grip and lighting. An $8500 1.2k Arri HMI Par rents for about $125-175/day anywhere in the us. That's full day rate not taking into account any longer term discounts and adjustments for supply/demand in those areas. That still puts it around or over 1.5%
This number in this situation is very fair for both parties involved in a rental. The HMi will have an incredibly long life span and require service through out.

A c stand is an even better example. Costing about $180 and renting for about $2.50/day - but lasting decades and retaining it's value and usefulness with minimal service expenses. There is little change in technology and they never phase out, not to mention the cost of the metals increases over time. Something this small can often be your biggest percent ROI, not that you'll make more money on it, but rather a bigger rate of return against the investment over a longer life.

Cameras and other technology have incredibly short lifespans (with the exception of beta of course! ;). I find that these things usually level out in the 3-5% range which is also very fair considering that they have an active rental life that may last from 3-5 years in regularly active rentals, and the price will decline through out it's life. Not to mention that the service costs may be substantially higher than other types of equipment.

Likewise you'll get a slower rate of return on the support system for your camera - even though it may have costed about the same - but it has a much longer lifespan to get that ROI

I feel like once it's hit your proposed .5-1% rate, it would be phased out technology wise.

The higher rate of return doesn't necessarily apply to film cameras though as like lighting the technology doesn't change as fast and their lives are much longer.

Just my two cents

Cheers

only at a rate of $1.50/hour, min 18 hour day.

and forget craft services and lunch! no time and time is money...

Ha. Shawn, if I'm ever in Hawaii I owe you a drink for that laugh.

You too rick if I'm ever in your neck of the woods

Seriously... Red's without GOOD Glass are getting day rates of $200-$300. Just believe it. If you had a Ang 17-80 or 28-76 then yes you would get $1000/day. If not then no you just simply can't get more than $500 for a Red Body.

Rental houses give the body's away if you get Glass, thats why its so hard for a owner to compete. I look after Jobs where I rent the body and get me a 1st AC or Loader position that pays at least $400 for 10. If the glass comes from somewhere else, the budget for Camera is spent on the High Dollar Lenses, Not to mention most Houses won't rent Glass to Red owners who don't have a good relationship with the House.
