Thanks very much for that Larry. It never occurred to me that there has already been a extremely similar situation in the past.

There are plenty of people pooling their gear, but there's definitely a trick to having the right stuff in the right way so you don't lose jobs.

this guy is great. You guys don't see the upside of this dude.
You rent FROM him, saving you all the headache of owning, and then charge your clients a normal fee like everyone else does!

I think it's a GREAT Idea to be a low ball operative!

Anyway I just cut some Lumix footage in with RED and it worked just fine.(I'ts not RAW but still...)
Pretty soon you'll see every camera on earth with a full size sensor shooting any format you desire.

well, i am off this ship. tell the glacier hello from me.

Bring on the $150 package!!!

Bring on the $150 package!!!

To be honest, what...most of you thought this price wouldn't be introduced. Kidding me, right...!!! There are 6,000 RED ONE's out there. If you thought you would be charging $1,500/per day for the camera package for years...you must be smoking something good. Scarlet is before us in the next couple of months or longer say 6 months. When they are released, say goodbye to your high "rates" page. You'll be happy if someone will rent your camera & gear out. Most of you will survive because you have a good reputation, great reels, good contacts and good knowledge of your camera & gear. That's how you'll do well. If not, you're going to be sorely mistaken to make money on your camera. Some of those guys renting cameras very low rates with their DP's services aren't very good dp's. Those DP/Cam owners with the high day rate or packages are very good DP with a great reels and very knowledgeable of photography that happen to have the camera. Look at those guys/girls demo reels or their websites. Simply amazing. I'm not hiring a DP for the low rates, I'm hiring the DP for his/her skills, experience, knowledge and great to work with. Period. Not the darn camera.

Personally, I'm happy someone is renting their camera & gear for a reasonable price. Generally, I have my own DP or I hire one for the job not because of the camera. The cam is only $17.5K...what did you think.
I manly do features, I will rent camera and gear for months at a time. If its more cost saving to buy the camera...I will and train the Dp/camera guys/editors if they aren't familiar of it, highly not the case for the feature.
I got one quote for $10,000 for a month and about six months ago...one for $15K/month Are you crazy!!! I would buy the camera then.

Just rent out your cam & gear reasonably and make some money but make the contacts that make you survive in this market and up-coming future. You want to make your own features, hook up with producers that make it happen - so you cut a bit of a loss with the gear but you gain so much more in the long term. That's how rental houses work. They build relationships not over charging. They want to help you and in return you'll go back or referrers others to their shop. That's the key.

So, rent your cam for $250/day or $150/day...see how many people rent your cam & gear and build on those relationships. Get the work, more experience and a better demo reel. If not, shoot...make movies, make commercials, make contacts...make something...than fueling the fire on this issue.

Just do something...rent or shoot.

Jeff,

Please delete this thread!!!! It is totally absurd and a useless exercise.

Cheers,
Prio
