That's uncalled for. I am 100% American and sick of whiny Americans who think because they are privileged enough to afford an expensive camera, they are entitled to be at the top of the food chain. Perhaps you are charging too much for what has become a common camera.

Just like to say thanks for coming all the way across the pond to under cut locals. Gosh, how do you make any money at all what with taxes and such. Got a work permit, or here on a tourist visa?

Are you hired for your creative talent or because you're a schmo with an expensive camera? If it's the latter I feel sorry for you.

Agreed.

Paris, lots of us bought Reds to enable our chosen careers. Dropping rates to new lows hurts all of us. It devalues something that inherently has and should have a lot of value.

I am part of a creative collective based in LA and Paris.

Would be nice to find out some more info about you and your company RougeDP? Is it based in France, in the US?

it has nothingggggg to do with getting work cause of a camera..
were talking about rental prices NOT dp gigs..

A lot of us work with or without our Camera.. 35mm RED HD it doesnt matter..
the argument is RENTAL RATES and how you are dropping your pants and bending over, thus in return creating a low ball market. MOST of us who have invested heavily in expensive gear, cant get what its worth in rental rates to try and recoup some of the cost.

I'd be more than happy to get gigs because of my expensive cameras.

:-)

But $150 a day? That's amazingly low. . .

It's important to put this rental in perspective. He's offering 150/day with a very narrow window. I don't think Paris deserves all this venom. In fact this arrangement is essentially going to allow some no budget project a chance to use a camera they wouldn't otherwise have access to. In the grand scheme of things it's a good thing to have more folks out there exposed to the camera. What Paris is doing is by no means shifting the market (1 package for 3 days doesn't change squat).

And besides - LA already has a few $500/weekend packages. Do I think rates will continue to drop? Probably not. Although more cameras are available, more shows should be switching to the platform. Since shows like ER and Southland and others have adopted the camera it proves that the post workflow is solid and ready for 'prime time'. Once that post production pipeline is set I imagine more shows will require the camera. Which is great for the bigger rental houses. How the individual renter competes in that market? I don't know.

I know Nate Weaver and he is most definitely a schmo with an expensive camera. And if by Schmo you mean awesome D.P./Director, then I guess we're on the same page there.

At $150/day, why don't you just give away the camera for free instead of making a buck?

Find a good L.A. student film worthy enough to donate to or a non-profit group looking to shoot something they would otherwise be left using DV or an HVX for. Or open a thread here and ask if anybody out there might be interested in a trade. You let me rent your package for free for 3 days and I repay the favor to you in the future. That way you meet some contacts, build a rapport and ultimately get more work in the future leading to more money and friends.

I'm sure there are plenty of smaller productions/students that would love to use your gear for a day that could otherwise not afford.

At $150 a day though, why bother advertising here? I'd just give it away at that point but then again, I'm not a fool.

We ordered our first one a full year before they started shipping and the most recent one was purchased a few months ago.

Look at any of our reels. I think they all speak of creativity. Rouge, how long have you owned the camera?

Thank you for your healthy attitude towards this.

We do "give away the camera for free" to students and otherwise broke artists who we feel have something important to shoot. In fact, one of our cameras is only in use like this. The $150/day is not our usual rate. It is for the dates you saw in the original post. All this excitement over the rate did help reveal that in fact supply and demand are in full swing worldwide with respect to the RED and that even at 150/day rental, a profit is still being made. Perhaps not the type of profit greedy folk like, but that's not my problem. Spoiled Americans are the reason I like it so much in Paris and as an American myself, I am ashamed of the whiny RED owners who try feebly to price-fix in an arena you thought was exclusive but are finding out is not. You're not the coolest kid on the block anymore. LOL

Who are you? What is the name of your collective and its contact info in Paris? Thank you.

(As a red rental house in Paris, we have a lot of requests from students so I'm sure they'll be really happy to get in touch with you).

With the exception of a couple healthy, level-headed, respectful peers who have thrown in their two cents here, it's clear that most of you are arrogant, scared, combative and not interested in constructive discussion. I suppose this is the cliché persona of the heavily-invested-in-equipment DP. Bye bye.

So either you're killing the market with low ball pricing, OR, you're a greedy jerk. Any chance there's something in the middle?

BTW- proper rental support structure for most professional production work requires a certain amount of overhead that must be paid for. Implying that any rate over $150/day is evidence of greed is troll talk IMHO.
