  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Smaller cards yielding slower write speeds.

Jarred also mentioned this in the Scott Balkum Live stream. Was kind of like: Go 256 and up and you'll be good...

What Thomas said above. I only was able to test cards I had here or nearby, I'm sure RED will have a more official list at the end of the day than whatever I can test, perhaps by the time the black bodies ship. There's just too many brands and even variants that I can't realistically do tests on everything short of people sending cards to me and I'm kinda done doing media tests for now as that was like week 1 or 2 for me once my metallic cubic lizardy orange child came into my life.

Most in the world seems to be using Angelbird and ProGrade 256GB and up. You'll want the newer ProGrade cards as there was some sort of version thing somebody uncovered online. I'm on Angelbird cards. RED offers branded Angelbird cards now as well.

Things to avoid for sure, 64GB cards and likely some 128GB cards.

Any difference between your Angelbird CFast cards and Arri certified ones? Can i use regular Cfast cards from Angelbird on Arri cameras? or Arri certified ones on Komodo?

Haven't used the Arri branded CFast 2.0 cards, I am told it's just a firmware to make them "authorised" by Arri.
Regular Angelbird cards work perfectly. I got mine custom engraved but I'd love to sneak a couple of 512GB RED Branded CFast cards as well as a RED CFast Reader in the next shipment from RED!

I got my Stormtrooper this evening and I have to say any worries I had previously about a soft image have been quelled. The image is sharp, yet cinematic; the colors are amazing and I've barely even had a chance to dive in to any serous grading. The image that comes out of this camera with very little adjustment is beautiful.

Here's a screen grab from my initial messing around. I think the image quality is pretty great considering my Small HD monitor hasn't come yet (focus was just from the tiny on-camera screen), the grading was nothing more than about 30 seconds of curve adjustments in Resolve, and the lighting situation wasn't great.

That looks terrific. Honestly, I wonder if many people apply the grading too thickly. Do what you have to, but no more. IMHO.

Would be nice.. but as of today.. CFEXPRESS is still a unicorn.

A year later, no longer a unicorn. Maybe an upgrade option? 2 TB for under $1000!
Two new CFexpress memory cards are now officially released and are currently in stock:

Delkin 2TB CFexpress: $999.99 (more info)
Wise 1TB CFexpress: $899 or two for $1,599 (more info)
A few other new CFexpress memory cards are currently available for pre-order.

An upgrade would be way too expensive, not to mention it would be useless (in terms of Komodo), IMO. You would have to change hard- and software (Serial ATA to NVMe protocol) in order for these cards to work. Such high write speeds are not required as Cfast2.0 obviously offers enough for Redcode RAW. Nevertheless, I find it quite surprising that they don't cost more than Angelbirds Cfast2.0, especially because Angelbird still don't offer CFExpress Type B cards yet. Actually, I had expected twice the price of the Cfast2.0 cards - so, almost MiniMag prices, hehehh..
I'm also a little skeptical about their reliability, because there's a lot of heat generated on such a small memory card.
As for DSMC3, I am hoping that RED will switch to ordinary m.2 NVMe SSD's, by just selling the SSD enclosure w/ interface adapter and we can decide which of the RED approved SSD's to use.

A RED camera is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to.

but its perfect.

Nice! I must have missed the announcement on that little accessory on top! Assuming it’s turning the top screen into a pseudo viewfinder. What is it and does it quickly remove if needed?

I did a very quick test with kids on my street. Love the Global Shutter. The shaky cam feel was on purpose for testing reasons only!

It looks really nice !
I have the same Nikon glass and it really is an awesome lense IMO.
Is the Aivascope 1.5x difficult to use ?

Not OP, but our company has an Aivascope and might be looking into another soon. We’ve used them mostly on S1H with contax glass. Honestly, for a scope, it’s quite sharp. I do feel like I have to stop down to 2.8 for my personal taste of sharpness, which then makes the oval bokeh a little more rectangle bokeh (but that’s because of the contax lens design). All of that being said, for $2.5k, you’re getting a pretty versatile scope. Sure, there’s probably better scopes out there, but the ease of use has been what sold me on it. It’s easy to get the scope in the correct vertical position, easy screw filter sizes for step ups or step downs. In a budget situation, it’s a great way to go anamorphic.
