  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You're correct, there's no way Red is using another company's sensor in their camera. Jarred has talked about all the time they spent designing this sensor. Also Global shutter at the framerates and sensitivity he's been talking about is a huge jump forward, they're not about to give their lead away to another company that they are in competition with. That would be really stupid and would undermine the reason for making the camera.

I'm willing to bet (a symbolic dollar lol) that Canon, like RED, doesn't sell its sensors to others.
And I'm pretty sure the Mavo Edge sensor is based on the Sony Semicon IMX309 (which is the sensor in the Nikon Z7).

Definitely possible, but didn't think that sensor could achieve the rolling shutter numbers Kinefinity are claiming. Huge emphasis on claiming. #threadhijackover

Canon had more patents granted than any other company last year, and is consistently in the top 5. Believe me, they have amazing sensor tech. The question is, will they release a camera with it? From the specs of the EOS R5 and the new C300Mk3 I’m feeling the answer might be yes.

Several of Jarred's photos on instagram suggest that, in particular the cage and small cowboy handles.

Keep your eyes peeled I am sure there will be news in the coming months.
 
A few Komodo thoughts. I'd love to see the record button removed from the touch screen, personally. It would free up some room on the UI and prevent accidentally touching the screen and blowing through your media while you walk around. I Realize you can probably lock the screen but I probably wont use that feature too much. I would much rather start and stop recording with the physical buttons on the camera.

A zoomed in focus check would greatly aid in critical focus when shooting on the tiny screen.

Please make a tilty EVF for the camera that plugs into the top pins. I can imagine the most amazing hand held mini set up with the Komodo, side handle with start/stop, tilty evf for monitoring, Canon ef adapter with the variable ND and then a set of Leica R primes. That would be fantastic.

That's basically my dream set up right there. Hope that becomes possible with the Komodo!

Love it. Let skeuomorphism stay in the trash can where it belongs. UI shouldn't distract from the beauty of the hardware nor draw attention to itself. Purely informative and spartan UI tends to actually look "cooler" to me. In the same way that fighter jet UI looks cool and the current Red UI looks cool. UI that draws attention to itself has the opposite effect.

Hi all. I have been reading this forum for years as a user and fan of RED. I also have been following this thread on its original post since July last year with great interest and anticipation. This is my first time I’ve made a post on this forum of any type. Just wanted to say after surviving 2 surgeries this year and the current pandemic situation we are all in that it is truly great to see creatives have something to discuss, strive for and look forward to in this awesome little camera.

As simple or trivial as it may seem, something like this helps some of us keep somewhat of a normal mindset while there are so many other things that are not normal. I just wanted to thank everyone here for such an entertaining ride over the past almost year on this thread and for the years of interesting and knowledgeable other ones. Thank you Jared for taking us on a fun and insightful ride as well along the way. I look forward to finally seeing this tiny beauty in its final form in the flesh (metal?), until then I’ll be patiently playing with my Dragon ✅

Patience is key.
I'm pretty sure we'll get an update from Jarred and / or the Red team when the situation will be clearer for them logistically talking.
Every day I got questions from my collaborators regarding when we'll get back to shooting, what we're going to do financially, what's the next project, etc... And to be honest, it's sometimes really stressing because there's no way to find an answer so wait and see and same thing for Komodo.
Only thing I'm pretty sure is the day this little camera show up, it will be a blast ;)

Glad you can join us at the table, Matthew! We are all very eager to see, hold and shoot the Komodo. Shouldn't be too much longer... Was hoping for a May update myself but until Jarred is reddy to talk, all we can do is keep our ears perked.
 
I’m in no rush. Got too many cameras as it is ;). I just wanted to say I’m grateful to have even this thread and it’s awesome collection of users as a positive distraction from the madness.
