  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Jarred, I’m in no rush, please take your time and get it right. Given the current situation and the word coming in from the grapevine people need to calm down. It’s amazing that development is still able to continue at all. Everyone needs to be prepared for the very real possibility of delays over the coming weeks as the world hunkers down to combat this virus. Stay safe people

Does shooting the 4k 12g stream directly have an advantage over R3D?

No.. not at all. Simply needed to get it done first because it's the monitor path and since it was new to us we needed to get it right. R3D's are king but doesn't do you any good if you can't see what you are shooting :)

Sorry if this has already been asked/answered, but with 4K 12G SDI out becoming a thing for the first time on RED, do we have to be vigilant with plugging/hotswapping power as Arri advises, or have you guys found a way to mitigate that on Komodo?

Obviously ;) Can't wait to see what you've done, hats off to all the team for the hard work especially in this worldwide pitch-black situation ..

From my understanding, recording the 4k 12g stream was an exceptional feature for an exceptional situation, that's how wild these animals are my friend ;)

He directly recorded the 4k 12g stream.

It was the first test of our first ever implementation of 4k 12g SDI. And In true Soderbergh fashion, we only got it working the day of... what he needed for it to work didn't work when I boarded the plane and literally on my flight over from LA to NY to hand off the cameras the engineers threw down some serious magic.

I spent an hour on that flight coming up with a " sorry it didn't work out " speech to tell Soderbergh.. luckily I didn't need to use it.

Our engineers are such rockstars.

Featurette from the Criterion Collection release of "Che" that looks at the RED camera and the effect of this digital cinema device on modern film production. Steven Soderbergh has used the RED camera on every film he's made since "Che".

When the RED One was first announced and those of us who believed enough to put down that first $500 deposit, we had no idea how we were going to record or deal with 4K. The fiber port module for recording the raw 4K stream to an off board computer looked to be the way forward. That module was on our shopping list, and I’m sure for many others. Then along came REDCODE and the ability to record to CF cards and the RED Drive HDDs, it changed everything. When time came to actually buy the camera, there was no need for that fiber module. I think Jim said only one or two people actually ordered it, so it was never produced.

has the dynamic range been discussed?

Do we know what it will be?

Yes Curtis, Jarred already mentioned DR in this long thread.

Jarred's Responses:
"You can expect Komodo to fall in the vicinity of a Helium for dynamic range, in both Global Shutter mode and Rolling Shutter mode."
"Global Shutter has always come at the expense of dynamic range. Our sensor team overcame that... and it's pretty monumental."
"Komodo dynamic range is within half a stop of Helium in both Rolling shutter and Global shutter modes."

Tha's all for now

12G SDI is essential for monitoring and recording 4K full bandwidth 12 bit deep color HDR video. Makes sense for it to be a standard feature of Komodo.

I think it was actually $1,000 rather than $500. IAC, in April of 2006, IIRC, the Dalsa was the only 4K digital motion camera on the block and it had to be tethered to a RAID for recording.

Yup. I remember Paypal shutting us down almost immediately when we opened those deposits because they were sure we were a scam as there was so many orders in so little time.

My wife may have thought so too when i took a $1000 and put it down on an unknown company promising a futuristic camera. I think it worked out okay in the end. :-)

Also, glad to see the excitement around Komodo. Kind of has that vibe from the early days and I can tell you are excited about it. I'm keeping my eyes on this thread very carefully.

Yep, and I remember bugging Kelly, every minute as she reassured me that my failed transactions would not inflict on the reservation number :)

Same here.
Everyone thought I was crazy.
I even called my bank and tried to convince them I was not crazy and that I wanted the transaction to go through!
Ended up wrestling for quite a while with 3 banks but it was well worth it!

In France, no banks wanted to loan us money for purchasing a Red One even with a solid business plan. We had to wait till 2010 and show some contents shot with the Red One to get our first loan and purchase a complete Red One kit.

yep! The company I worked for back then was going to get one, but bailed...still have this guy...Its ok, I bought my own RED a few years later and rented it to them, so it worked out ;)
