  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Ugh...another RU kick. Hope at least a few Hydrogen buyers got in on it.

Any color is fine with me as long as its black. :)
Black only for me as well, even if I have to wait longer! Less chance of it showing up in a reflection, casting unwanted bounce, etc. More Stealth...

Arsenal

Arsenal

(snip) I wonder IF DSMC3 is being worked on, it seems like a lot of energy and time is being put into Komodo and I was thinking is anything else solid in the works? (snip)

FWIW, I'd think that the RedTeam is learning a great deal on the Komodo project that will apply to DSMC3 development.

Keep in mind that Jarred declared DSMC2 would last until "at least" 2020, not that DSMC3 was scheduled for 2020 release.

I'd also note that RED has unified the DSMC2 bodies, added Rangers and been able to make Monstros in quantity since that statement.

The unique capabilities offered by Komodo bodies add compelling options to our arsenal. So much so, that even if Komodo does delay DSMC3 release, "making do" with a DSMC2 Monstro a bit longer seems like a good trade off to me.

Like most device development timelines in modern tech, it's a balance between waiting for viable next generation components and getting a product to market. Moreover, unlike a smartphone, a serious digital cinema camera isn't something you want to upgrade every couple of years - especially if the new device is only incrementally better than the existing one. If you ask me, I love the idea that RED can sell tons of Komodos over the next couple of years to keep the lights on while they engineer a DSMC3 that's a serious step up from DSMC2.

Early in RED's history there was a lot of impetus to dramatically redesign the cameras to move past fundamental issues with the R1 and DSMC1 platforms. IMO, that is no longer the case. While there is always room for improvement, DSMC2 ticks the important boxes for most use cases. Take the right amount of time, whatever that is, to make a DSMC3 that easily justifies the upgrade cost from DSMC2. If that's not until 2022, I, for one, am fine with that.

Since I'm on my soapbox today, and with Komodo filling the need for a compact camera with state of the art IQ, perhaps DSMC3 doesn't have to be super small. I'd be interested in seeing RED take the Ranger form factor to the next level, perhaps taking some cues from PV's DXL program. The traditional rigging of a camera package with add on accessories used to be SOP, but is that still the best approach? Seems like the time is ripe to integrate most of the functionality provided by all that "gack" into the body itself. Just a thought...

Cheers - #19

Any confirmation as to whether the Komodo will record ProRes internally or not?

I am a little confused. Komodo cameras are coming off the line and "select" people are taking delivery of cameras and after nine months of teasing we still do not know the tech specs ??? I understand early in the development process specs would be a moving target but if the cameras are being delivered surely most of the specs are now baked in??? Am I missing an announcement amongst the 496 pages of speculation within Reduser ? After nine months the tease has the potential of going stale.

Tom, get used to it. Red Marketing is colours, names etc.
This is how it works:

Last year Zcams and other cheap decent camera gave been arriving.
So now first wave of 20 customers will be loyal Red boys, and we all know who they are. They will provide 100% positive tests and feedback.
Second wave 1-2 months later will be White brigade of 50 proven Red users.
The rest of Planet will get it before Christmas.

Jiri,

I don't have a problem with the way Red goes about its roll out as these early adopters/enthusiats will act as beta testers so Red can sort out any issues before the general release to the "great unwashed." My point is I do not understand why Red doesn't release the camera's specifications if Komodo's are rolling off the line?

Look. Nothing is rolling off the line. It is put together by hands. Once little problems are sorted out, real production will start. 3 months from now. Would be nice to see some indie tests by indie DOPS compared to FX9, c300 mk3 and Zcams and Kine cameras. If i was proud of my product, i would love it to have it tested by Roger D. Anyway, soon there will be affordable 8K Zcams, Pocket Cams and Kines.

The way I see it, it is still too early, with Covid-19 and the effects of quarantine having stalled most businesses.
The RED Team is going above and beyond, wasting no time during all this by making great strides and sourcing parts against the pandemic tide to finalise the firmware, colour science and supply for the production line.
Even some of RED’s own Troops have done some shooting here and there during the quarantine and we are lucky to have seen snippets of the production process.

Now, for a few select projects, a few hand built units have reached big names in the market (see Michael Bay, the Wachowskis, etc) who can provide crucial feedback needed for the further development of this little beast.

With the hardware design finished, rather than sit on his thumbs Jarred is using them to hand-build a few more units that will provide crucial feedback for the next phase which is to finalise the software side of things. Since these are very few, on his personal account he reached out to anyone listening and willing to justify the expense, to get a chance at a few pre-release units that will most likely see a bunch of software updates as time goes by.
Like most in here, I wasn’t quick enough and these were gone before I realised the email was stuck in my drafts folder instead of being on the way to Jarred’s email server (facepalm moment). Figured it out later during that day and off it went to flood Jarred’s mailbox! :D
Thankfully there’s still hope for a potential second wave (fingers crossed) and then certainly the Stormtroopers for every brave soul up for the challenge.

The way I see it, the specs still have the potential to change. The firmware could affect the frame rate and the final colour science can affect the IQ.
If you are brave and vigilant enough to get a chance at one of these early units, hat’s off to you for helping shape the final product! We cannot thank you enough!!!

A bit thank you to Aaron, Graeme, Jarred and the entire RED Team for braving the storm and managing to keep the prices low and delivery as close to what we were hoping!

The rest of us have extra time to exercise patience, 3D print dummies and daydream of the day we start shooting and generally enjoy the ride and the glimpse behind the curtain at the incredibly involved production process!!!

I can’t wait to get my hands on a Crazy Coloured one if there’s to be a second wave, and a Stormtrooper when the time is ripe. Got so many projects that can take advantage of the Komodo and a bunch of rigging setups to test!

Let’s all stay positive, sounds like the greater part of the wait is behind us!!!

Hey David, Sorry yes my email has had a total meltdown. With these first ones you don't get to pick the color, We shoot a handful of whatever color happens that week and then let them out to those who wants them.

That said... the response has been overwhelming for those that want something outside the normal. Im not sure how much of that is to be first vs how many people actually want a different color but lets get through these and the stormtroopers and after we start shipping the blacks I am open to making some really custom ones if people are still into it.

That is great Jarred. I am down to have a custom option after shipping the Black Ones. :)

Until firmware and color science are locked, the final specs are still unknown, even by Jarred.

I'm sure it will be a lovely camera. We're already using a stripped-down Red with some pancake lenses, so if it's possible to keep this one as minuscule as possible, ie to focus accurately with the built-in screen, we'll definitely get one for our feature film work. Small is beautiful :-)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Dear Chief,

Thank you for creating the Komodo. I have emailed, but I am pretty sure that I am not high on the list. I am hoping to be able to pick up at least one soon. Since I am located in Asia, will that be an issue?

Thanks Chief.

Hi Kenneth, by looking at the FedEx shipping updates here: https://www.fedex.com/en-us/shipping/current-rates/surcharges-and-fees.html
I understand that we can expect a slight shipping surcharge and maybe a delay of a few days but that largely depends on the country you are in and what sort of restrictions there may be for importation.
To sum it up, I think we shouldn't be very concerned about shipping, but rather for the delays we may experience at customs.

Will the Komodo have any sort of image stabilization? IBIS?
Thanks

Would for sure be nice. Even though there is a little wobble on Panasonic's IBIS for the S1H (could be due to the high rolling shutter), it would be nice to have the option to turn on and off IBIS for the Komodo. Though I think most people are hoping for Gyro-data, much like the SteadXP and what the FX9 has implemented. The only problem with these is having to shoot with a high shutter in order for the software to grab a "sharper" image to stabilize. My hope is that the global shutter will help post stabilization as is. If there is an IBIS that's included, that would add some flexibility to our on set shooting with our Contax Zeiss set. We already have a the RF 28-70 ready. But if there's no stabilization included in the Komodo, we might sell it for the RF 15-35 and RF 70-200 due to the amazing IS those lenses have.

Any good recommendations on the accessories for this Red Komodo that will make it a powerhouse?
