  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

So, somewhere out there is some footage of a car flipping with a Komodo on the roll bar... :auto:

<snip> .

Nahhhhh , 'cuz the batteries shook loose :smilielol5:

That's a little "Spendy" to not have it in the can.

Twelve months from now,

Person: "Jarred these batteries are soooo hard to get in and out … they hurt my little fingers mehhhhhhhhh "

Jarred: "They're rated to 15 Gs…" (facepalm).

I'm hardly an authority, but to give some general information since there's been some confusion in recent pages kind of about compression, downsampling, framerates, etc:

Every sensor design has a "read/reset" time which is a hard limit on how fast a row of pixels can report their data and reset to be ready to record again. This timing is especially critical to achieving a global shutter. On higher end cameras that's is why, say, 6K 2.4:1 can sometimes achieve faster framerates than formats that are lower resolution overall but taller (ie 5.5K 1.896:1). Or why more compressed or downsampled images are unlikely to give you faster framerates. Now, on something with the data throughput of an $1800 DSLR or a $25 UHS-I SD card, data throughput can be your limiting factor for resolutions and framerates, sure ... but on Komodo I'd bet it's read/reset time.

there are compression ratios attached to all Red Cameras

IDK, it does have 4K HDSDI output...

are you thinking the read/reset can't be done at 180fps?

I wonder what pixel binning on RAW would be like?

Global shutter read/reset is significantly slower than rolling shutter because ALL of the pixels are read and reset during the dark interval between frames rather than read/reset of one row at a time during exposure.
Do any Red's scale raw output? I don't think so. They might scale video outputs, but usually the trade off for speed is cropping the sensor to a smaller format. Fewer pixels.
Scaling and compression are two different things. Compression doesn't necessarily result in loss of resolution.

No, and in fact the only manufacturer to try this stupid idea at one time was Canon. But thankfully I don't think they offer that as an option anymore. Some might disagree and that we should have the option, but really, it's for our own protection. Seriously, it's idiotic.

I think one thing you really can expect from me is doing fun stuff with that RF mount.

In conjunction with RF lenses? I thought the AF will need at least a couple of firmware upgrades to get to the point we want to have it...
As for me, at least at the beginning until AF works properly I'll use my Zeiss Otus EF mount lenses with the V-ND filter...

We are doing the AF work right now on EF lenses first , so that’s good for you except the part where you are using a manual EF lens :)

This is a nice option to have when you really need that functionality and a time saver on run and gun type scenarios as well. Thanks.

So I'm just wondering:

You said the other day Continuous AF is the future of cine shooting (sad for some, in a way, but surely you're right). But I gather the future is not today since you also said a while back that of course Komodo won't compare with Dual Pixel.

Are you even shooting for a usable Continuous AF during filming on Komodo, or should we be expecting something more along the lines of the "tap the screen to focus before rolling to give your focus puller a little head start" like the Pocket Cinema 4K/6K have? Maybe the latter for early firmware with a goal to get to the former eventually?

Nikon: "Hold my beer."

Apparently the new ProRes RAW Z6 Ninja V frankenrig line-skips.

Have you tested this? So far just one guy claiming it's so without proper tests, using monitor for resolution charts... It would seem very very stupid for Nikon to attempt something like this after all prores RAW waiting and hype. Would show their complete misunderstanding of the video shooters' needs. Which of course is a posibility...

Scaling Raw is better than uprezzing but it still has it's downsides.

Shooting images at the best quality is always what you should do.. obviously.

I understand that people want easy..... and to save disk space... and they just want the fastest process/export possible.

REDcode kind of takes care of the disk space issue.

For faster/easier processing... I'm sure many of you have noticed more and more recently us up on stage at AMD and NVIDIA hijacking hardware launches as well as investing a lot of time and resources with APPLE and various PC hardware companies ..... Which I am sure to all the gamers in the audience must seem weird to have a guy that makes cameras yapping about stuff they don't care about, but we are there supporting and pushing the guys that make the chips to go bigger and faster , as well as making software to push what we all do to realtime and beyond. And that seems to be working.

So..punchline.... shoot the biggest, best footage you can. We are working hard to make sure as we push pixels to the extreme that we also push the backend to make sure that things get easier and easier.

And we definitely appreciate that!

Personally I try my best to shoot as high quality as possible because it's just better. I think some of the hard part is when you need higher frame rates. It would be awesome to step down to 3k or 2k and not have a super long lens all of a sudden. But this is coming from me who's still on a Scarlet-X so that's probably not a lot of peoples struggle anymore. lol.

I stepped down to 2K to shoot some 60 FPS and it hurt my heart a little.

The answer here is not to change completely what you're doing, but I do think that way the cropped sensor effects framing can be annoying in some instances. (Again Scarlet-X. It's still running though!)

Does anybody know what monitor mount that is? Seems like it might be a GDU one but hard to tell with the tape covering it. I don't see it on the GDU site, unless its made specially for Komodo and isn't released yet.

If your looking for a simular mount that will probably be 1/4 the cost of the upcoming GDU one and be more functional because it goes up down and left right check out this one from smallrig: https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-s...MIyviV7rqQ5wIVj8DACh30WgFJEAAYASAAEgITpvD_BwE

I use it on my 7in ultrabright (the one without the mount built in) and it works amazingly well for how small and light it is. Perfect for mounting to camera or gimbal.

Honestly I am still a bit mystified that the Komodo wont be able to use red touch monitors. I am sure there is a reason for this, I just wish it was not true. I love the 7in ultra-bright so much, best camera upgrade I think I have ever made.

A Hard mount RF can be whatever--- with workarounds, don't you got tired to hear that "some"cameras need workarounds.
DSMC3 will be more than Komodo with PL. I hope.
So why not give a chance for PL uses to choose PL variant? And for anybody who feel need in changing mounts RF?

I hope that DSCM3 will be exactly Komodo, with any mount option, control port, and specs found in the weapon VV with double the frame rates:)

edit- + ability to attach red touch screens.

Sorry for going off topic, folks [this post is about the Nikon Z6].

Well, it was too late at night, I meant to type "downsampled" which is what Karim was talking about, not "line-skipped." That's confirmed; the sensor is 6048 pixels wide but the UHD 4K isn't windowed.

But I also saw the blog post you're talking about and I agree the methodology wasn't sufficient to tell us the *quality* of that downsampling (or whether there's also line-skipping).
