  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

And let’s not forget ENG lenses. While the servos are technically housed outside in the lens grip, the grip is essentially permanently mounted in place and with regular service, the servos perform for years under extremely demanding and harsh conditions. My oldest, continuously used ENG lens is at least 15 years old and while it’s serviced regularly(used to be yearly) it’s only been in once for a servo specific problem.

And to take that one step further... let us not forgot that A LOT of cinema lenses, specially the lower priced ones , start as still lenses with motors in them that they just take the motors out of and put gears on with some new mechanicals. We did the same thing with our awesome little 18-50mm and 50-150mm back in the day. The mechanical part of making a still lens into a cinema lens isn't trivial.. its a lot of work, a lot of design and it is expensive to do... and requires one by one alignment with the manual focus marks for accuracy... which we really don't need anymore when the lenses are smart.

please don't be late with this ;-)

Ha ha they are already done.. but don't worry, there will be a ton of accessory options not just by RED and GDU but by a ton of 3rd parties. We are waiting on 3 mechanical changes to come out of the oven right now. I just saw the first one yesterday and it was perfect. Once I get the other 2 , which we should get the first week of February, if they are a lock we will immediately release the mechanical drawings of Komodo to all the registered 3rd parties so everyone can start making stuff.

Great news...! Hopefully someone steps up fast to create a simple super LW base plate that also supports a rock solid PL...

PS we are convinced on LPL and you can just ignore LDS2 if you want and just push /I data through the pins... ?

6K@50fps, 4K@120fps?! I think I've missed 1 of the 337 pages of this thread.

That rumor is wrong as you all know. And a few other things . Hence why it’s called rumor round up. He does a good job of disclaiming that.

The RF mount is here to stay.
And if the recent Canon announcement is any indication of things to come, they will be focusing entirely on RF lenses with no EF mount lenses scheduled for at least a year.
https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/...non-no-new-ef-lenses-unless-market-demands-it - from a quick google search.
There's still rumours of the upcoming Canon RF cinema camera, but as Jarred already said, they are beat to the punch by the baby Dragon!

If you are planning on getting something compact like the Komodo, then electronic focusing PDAF, electronic Follow Focus or touch-focusing is definitely the way to go. Sadly, the PL mount has a looooooong way to go and as mentioned earlier, the XPL can't do much in that area.

If it helps, I've been using all of my EF and RF lenses, be them Canon L or the newer Sigma Art on almost full time servo focus without fail.
And among them I count the original 70-200 f2.8 IS EF L which I've owned for nearly two decades. Admittedly it's only been serviced twice in that time, and that was once for a cracked front element and once for a rear contact that broke off . Both times after I loaned it to a friend [facepalm emoji]. Not the focusing mechanism, ever!

I am so glad to be 10000% on board with all the choices made for Komodo!

Again, thank you for all the tantalising teases Jarred, keep 'em coming!!!

What part is wrong??:smile5:

I think Jarred means the max framerate @6k is 48fps not 50fps and nobody knows the max framerate @ 4k yet.

Those do look cool, bet they are Leica glass and look amazing

think the DXL2 can use those with Fool Control + Latitude/RT Motion? or do they work differently with a specific Panavision DXL2 controller?

Well... I started making a set of cinema lenses with motors in them about 6 or 7 years ago. And then the CEO of Panavision came by for a visit with the prototype new Primos.. And then abracadabra... the Panavision Primo Artiste with internal motors are released.

What kind of considerations should you have as an AC or Operator?

Are the Lenses lighter compared to Lens + Rail + Motor + cable?

do the motors work more smoothly and consistently because they are designed specifically for that lens and are not just a generic motor that you adjust?

Is there calibration and set up time?

Does it draw a lot of power(like external lenses motors do)?

(probably too many questions)

"I don't know, let's figure it out" is a red flag phrase on set, whereas it should be the basis of all operation.

No one serious goes into filming stage of a larger production with "I don't know, let's figure it out", that's why projects are planned for months, and there are prep days and gear testing days before the shooting starts.

If you are referring to a problem solving attitude, that IS the basis, but not left for the shoot in the context of testing out inovations and adapting the workflow on the go. Too much at stake in case things go wrong.

Anyway! Komodo! Will Arri respond?

Arri is not interested in that pricing segment and has no need to respond.

It looks like Komodo with size and global shutter presents the potential for top class action/multipurpose camera. Car mounts, body mounts, extreme sports, EFX rigs, custom solutions, you name it. With a wide range of usages and cinema grade imagery. While most affordable and most compact Red camera ever. Smart thinking from Red.

I know Komodo won’t be high speed compared to dsmc2. Wondering about cropped? Curious if it could do 4K 120fps. Boy if it could that would be a sweet spot ...
maybe they're working on downsampling from the full sensor to 4K?

so there's no crop from S35

yeah Fujinon would be the top of my list for companies to make a set of prime cinema lenses with internal motors (RF Mount?)

In concern to ENG Lenses and what Phil mentioned, they've had Triax cable, robocams and lots of options to remote operate cameras and free up the operator to focus on framing and movement

I think like Jarred said, it's like a trojan horse and when lens manufacturer creates internal motor lenses and ties it into Latitude/RT Motion/Fool Control(or the whatever generic version tries to rip it off), I think your see some new lens that are badass

Downsampling full sensor to 4K with higher frame rates would be wonderful! Let me keep my wide lenses! Crossing fingers on that one...

As amazing as that would be, downsampling would take up more processing power than just writing the full 6k, if anything you’d get a lower frame rate. I’ll take the crop over aliasing from pixel binning any day.
