  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

In rolling shutter mode, that's not so surprising. For both though, that's quite impressive -- never mind that it allows for switching modes, which is also impressive. And cool. :)

What makes me curious though is what advantage is there in using rolling shutter mode if there's no dynamic range penalty in global shutter mode? Or in other words, why use rolling shutter if it doesn't reduce dynamic range? Possibly higher max frame rates in rolling shutter rather than global shutter mode?
According with Jarred: “Rolling shutter mode is good when you want to match rolling shutter RED cameras in a multi camera setup.”

So no extra benefits. Hopefully it’s going to start being an issue of the past in camera technology

No penalty for the size.. no penalty for the Global shutter either . it's a real RED camera , and hence image is #1. You can expect Komodo to fall in the vicinity of a Helium for dynamic range, in both Global Shutter mode and Rolling Shutter mode.

Spectacular - next to being sure Komodo had .R3D this was my next biggest concern. I'm all in.

I caught that one shortly after I hit post. No big deal... but the fact that the dynamic range is the same in global shutter mode IS a pretty big deal. :)

When it ships, everyone with a cinema camera will be clamoring for global shutter again... :)

One of my biggest was framerate, but a global shutter 40 fps 6K camera at s35mm with a DR of around 15-16 is pretty much a done deal. The only thing I really want to see though is a dual-ISO mode. There are so many good low light options out there that help when the light budget is low or you want to be mobile but still light the scene, so giving Komodo the Gemini love would make for a superb small camera.

The Gemini sensor has superior DR than Komodo.

Undoubtedly. I was thinking more about Gemini's dual-ISO capability. If we can shoot with Komodo at a dual-ISO option around ISO2400, that would be perfect.

new protoype komodo pic up :) really great news updates today. i am beyond excited for the official release!

interesting how all the pics are using the smallHD focus monitor, I am curious if it offers anything special or is just a generally good monitor for the pre-production testing process.

Welcome to heartbreak, well that solidifies the beat down that is Hydrogen. I was holding out for Komodo to make up for that pounding... I paid full price first shipping week and hoped RED would honor all H1 owners, I think this would go a long way.....
The last ballpark I gave you is still looking good for the first run..... if everything continues to go as well as it has so far.

Good advice... And honestly we haven't laid out the Hydrogen discount plan yet. But I think it's probably fair to say that whatever happens will be for the original owner only.

Speaking of which.. I know I keep saying it but I want to be very clear that Komodo has always been, and continues to be, a camera first. The Hydrogen ( and other phones ) are an accessory to the camera, not the other way around.

I'm confused which part of this is heartbreak? There's still going to be a discount for Hydrogen owners.

Are you bummed because Komodo is a camera first and Hydrogen an accessory? If that's the case, I get where you're coming from but it's been that way for a while now. Basically as soon as there wasn't an actual module coming out, that's when Hydrogen became an accessory rather than the main event.

As for DNA... Komodo is it's own beast...I was just talking about this at the Reduser meetup last week and as subjective as such a thing can be, we determined it's probably most like a Helium but with a touch of Dragon.

Excellent news!!!
Thanks Jarred :)

I am pretty sure the Komodo DNA shares a lot of similarities with other Chordata and especially with Reptilia such as the RED Dragon :tongue_smilie:

I guess I should start flying in for those meetups ;)

The news that only first hand owners will get any placement or discount

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying. It seemed like you said you bought your Hydrogen the first week they were out. I guess I assumed that meant you bought it from Red not 2nd hand.

I went back and forth, being android ; ) and then grabbed one online when first orders were received and resold... Great deal for the initial purchaser....

I got the accessories ready... But something is missing between them...!

Ahhh yeah that makes sense.

Well I think probably since the discount plan hasn't been made there still might be room to accommodate those who bought in early even if it's second hand. I think the hard part is being able to verify that you know?

And if they do that, where does it stop? I think that's probably what they are thinking about. Technically speaking someone could just buy second hand today and try to claim a discounted Komodo if they don't put some sort of rule in place. I wonder if there's a way to still give people discounts if it was second hand but earlier on.

Jarred will there be a GDU package or a handheld package available? wondering if i should buy the gdu touch n go plate + cowboy handle, or to wait for a package that RED will sell complete... already have my port caps.

My absolute biggest question is how Komodo translates handheld. Huge win is that it has a global shutter. Just unsure how it translates since it’s a lighter package. I’m sure it’ll be great.

That's great since I truly love Helium but also very much so missed Dragon... Best of both worlds in a tiny beast ;)
