  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I know. A sensor as big as the Helium would be good enough for me. A VV sensor, of course, even nicer.

If S35 works for the big creative brains at Hollywood, we can all agree that as a creative spirit at heart, you could do wonders with it!

...
But in the spirit of discovery... perhaps I can still stay inside those rules and tell you what Komodo is not :)
Something tells me that it is also not the actual pet I imagined it to be... :/
I guess my family and friends can relax a bit now...!

That's besides the point. I took many wonderful images with an iPhone 7. I simply want to know if the sensor is going to be at least as big as the Helium. Not engage in another discussion about the importance of gear in photography (believe me, I've had a plenty already).

Thanks for sharing.

Since I originally signed up for H1 for the ‘module’ I can’t wait for more info.

Particularly thanks for clarifying it is not a module, since this has been a point of speculation for some time.

Hehe, like old times. I hope Komodo will have a good autofocus and redcode. Built in nd would been cool but I guess its a question of space, if it will be possible to fit inside a tiny body.
I have no doubed the Hydrogen was a great buy.

Any miraculous chance in hell I can see this when I take my trip to HB next week for the #shotonhydrogen contest? I'm visiting RED HQ next Friday at 2pm.

If not, hey, I tried. Would be awesome to run around with this for the weekend I'm there. I'll be taking photos/shooting video anyways.

The camera body looks tiny! Exciting!

Hi Jarred,

Is it genlockable?

If so, can I have two to demo please for a few days?! I own a hydrogen!!

Seconded!
I can fly there any time for this Jarred!

Just checked availability for tickets next week! :tongue_smilie:
Beer's on me!
And I know I've owe you quite a few from all these years.

Greg, if you make it to Huntington Beach next week, let me know. It'll be me and my brother enjoying our time there. It happens to coincide with the US Open for Surfing. Many opportunities to shoot footage and stills!

Justin & Gregory ,

so wait? ill see you guys in LA Next week? what? :)

right on ! #SHOTONKOMODO

screw storming Area 51, here we come Red Studios Hollywood
heheh

Is it compatible with the current dsmc2 monitors? Or you need an hydrogen to use it? I hope not, even if Jarred wrote "not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen" so KOMODO + H2 = 5K . It would be awesome to have a travel RED Cam in the backpack ;)

- It is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro Sensor

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, it contains new sensor tech. Seeing how the DSMC2 system allows for sensor swapping, I'm assuming that, whatever size sensor is in Komodo, it may come in other sizes as well.

I imagine it would have to, if it's smaller than S35, because of what I hope is true of every new sensor that gets announced by RED or any other manufacturer. Namely, that it captures at least 2-3 stops brighter luminance values than the current heavyweight champ in that department does.

Overall dynamic range is wonderful. Being able to see in the dark is wonderful. Exposing for highlights and brighter areas of the image you want to retain, especially with a wide dynamic range, is easily done by rating at a higher ISO (i.e. underexposing).

However, objects in any environment are as bright as they are at any given time and don't care at what point your sensor clips.

The higher the luminance values your sensor can see without clipping, the more those details that were previously deemed too bright to matter become interesting mid-tone detail, depending on how much more brightness you can capture.

I have said many times before that I'm convinced being able to capture higher luminance is KEY to making the most pleasing images overall, along with color rendering. That's the special sauce. This was determined a long time ago with film but people seem to have forgotten that's what made it look so good.

I always get grief here for mentioning it but I also know whoever manages to accomplish it will be celebrated in the industry. So, here's hoping that whatever sensor is in Komodo does for capturing significantly higher luminance values (than what are currently possible) as Gemini did for capturing significantly lower luminance values.

Looks like a RED version of the Zcam. Pretty awesome! Here is my guess for specs.

4.5K resolution up to 120fps
Dual base ISO
Super 35 sensor
Canon RF mount (great choice)
Maybe - phase detect autofocus?

This is basically a raven replacement with a better sensor and much smaller form factor. I think it’s a home run and exactly what some of us have been asking for for a long time.

Between my Komodo Cfast photo last week and Jim's reference in the Hydrogen thread there has been a ton of speculation of what Komodo is, and it sure is fun to watch imaginations run wild.

I told everyone that I wouldn't reveal Komodo until it was ready.. There still is a bunch of time before the first batch starts shipping towards the end of the year and everything can and probably will change.

But in the spirit of discovery... perhaps I can still stay inside those rules and tell you what Komodo is not :)

- It is not DSMC3
- It is not a replacement for DSMC2
- It is not 8k VV
- It is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro Sensor
- It does not have an HDMI port
- It does not use proprietary media
- It is not a “module”
- It is not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen.
- It has no XLR ports
- It does not have a fixed lens
- It’s body does not weight more than 2 pounds.
- It is not larger than 4 inches in any dimension.

O.. and since Komodo is alive and breathing and you will probably see it pop up over the next few weeks and months in the hands of some very talented people banging on it to try and break it... I guess I can at least leave you with this......

Hmmm... not larger than 4 inches in any dimension and weighs less than 2 pounds with an RF mount, and just above the $5K price point... I'm guessing a S35 or full-frame C200/EVA1/FS5 rival with a Z Cam E2 size? Or maybe a run-and-gun cam designed for gimbals such as the Ronin-S? Raven replacement it seems like.

Oooo I'm excited to see what it is. Honestly, been looking for a smaller camera where my Epic-W is overkill. And I'm sure it'll still have REDCODE RAW.
