  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

The only question I'm asking myself right now: the camera should be available in a month or two, so why isn't there any footage yet? The camera has already been used…I imagine Red is waiting for the most advanced version of the camera…

For the DR, with Global Shutter, I can't wait to see that… if it works, if the camera obtains 16 to 17 diaph, it will be a real little revolution!
But at the same time, I fear the success of the Komodo, with respect to the other Red cameras ... despite the fact that Jarred says that the goal is not to make it an A camera ...

In any case, the year 2020 will be a period of great progress… and big changes…

Jarred said he is waiting till Graeme Nattress is happy with the colour science.

Heh. Corrected. Amazing. I need an editor. Replying to threads on my cell phone is not advised.

It's OK my X-wife was a professional editor, always a brutal blood bath before a paper needed to be published.

Nowadays I relish my typos and bad sentence / paragraph structure lol *

You were shooting CES 2020 and Ivanka and AMD didn't scramble your brain ;-)

Rolling shutter artifacts.

That's a cool / fun render ~ good project.

It's funny on machining forums I'm brought in (sometimes) to resolve the "Machine is not rigid and tool bending moment has been exceeded " vs "No, that's a rolling shutter artifact " debate on a posted machining video ~ A lot of these machinists seem pretty knowledgeable about rolling shutter artifacts as they have to shoot from time to time big and small stuff that's spinning and moving pretty fast / high cutting rates. The Rolling shutter artifacts can make it look like stuff is dangerously bending and flexing more than it really is and sometimes the machine is being "abused" / dangerous cutting conditions.

There's a lot of industrial applications / industrial out reach / corporate videos where global shutter + RED workflow would be super practical / hassle free.

One of the most common style tests (early days of RED USER / group of folks ) is to shoot a tube train / metro / underground train side-on pulling into a station so you can measure directly the angular and temporal deviation of various vertical recorded features like the doors on the subway train slanting variously.

Dumb question:

Will KOMODO be able to handle flash and strobes ?

Does it shoot uncompressed RAW short bursts / stills ? Or am I smoking crack on that ?

I would love to have some photography functionality in a camera that size, but not sure if it’s in their priority list.

I'm just wondering if it might be an accidental byproduct or natural consequence of "Global shutter"... ?

[extraneous blah blah / footnotes.].

Time willing I'll dig back through schematics for different types of sensors / processing schemes for more generic sensor design and 1st and 2nd stage processing boards- not that I have any real idea how RED does what it does lol ! (That's a little different.) - [Nice to leave something to the experts right ! :-) ]

For our work we have to shoot Medium Format 3d sequences for larger high res Key frames (sloooooowww frame rate) but having continuous motion like KOMODO synched in would be super useful. For certain "action sequences" having the ability to compose more complex synchronization schemes between different camera types would be pretty amazing especially with strobes/ pulsed illumination.

So for folks with Monstro VV's I could envision a possibility of master synchronization schemes between Monstro and a bunch of little satellite KOMODOs all strutting their funky stuff in proper time. (no flash or strobes for monstro though... and now that I think about maybe not for KOMODO either until we learn more etc. )

This forum has gotten very long with lots of excitement. But I am having trouble finding out how this camera (from what is publicly know) compares to the current Red line up.

How will this compare to the Red line up. With all this hype and excitement feels like it going to be a waste to buy any other RED or is there some major things lacking that makes up when buying 25k-60k DSMC2 camera that I am missing?

^^^ I think that's a really excellent question.

Personally (only personally) I don't really think this camera has been hyped that much, compared to other previous offerings KOMODO seems fairly understated by comparison.

Hypothetically / theoretically ; if you were the CEO of a specialized camera "Manufactory " and somehow a little low priced yet quite powerful and unique little "beasty" wandered into your product portfolio one might not be that super enthusiastic about it as it requires a LOT of work and resources for not very much profit margin per unit AND especially if the imagery and product design may not seem as sexy as the other high end offerings that one normally deals with.

~ There is definitely a need for KOMODO "Like" imagers/ camera blocks but kinda depends how much of a hassle that line will be to roll out and support and whether it has any capability to undercut other RED offerings ? (At least in the mind's eye of various buyers/ consumers.).

Many great products get axed / discontinued (in spite of their popularity and capability) [broad terms in tech/ industrial tech ], and sometimes their like only resurfaces after a considerable period of time. Full frame (stills) sensors being a good example, anyone remember the KODAK 14n (awesome camera and price point) and took a considerable number of years before $5K full frame DSLRs became a "Thing" again.

People still buy original ARRI Alexa's, people still buy DSMC1 cameras, the DSMC2 lineup will not be irrelevant once Komodo comes out. Its complimentary.

If you can afford to drop 20K-60K on a RED, then i dont think it should even be a question, just buy both! But if you can't, then weigh the pro's and cons of each camera and see what suits your needs.

Do you need Slo Mo? Do you need modularity? Do you need more robust locking mounts? DSMC2

Do you need Global shutter? Do you need Autofocus? Komodo

The Komodo to me is perfect due to its form factor, size, weight, sensor size, resolution, non proprietary media, and the RF mount allows all my old vintage lenses to be used with adapters that have no additional glass elements. I still want a Dragon-x and a Monstro tho... oh the dream. I want it all!

Since Komodo is intended to intercut seamlessly with the DSMC line, there should not be significant differences in IQ or DR for optimally exposed footage. There are however major differences in operating features and options.

DSMC advantages:

Higher frame rates for a given resolution and format.
Much broader connectivity and configuration options with DSMC modules
Interchangeable lens mounts and OLPF’s
Faster, higher capacity dedicated media
Higher maximum resolutions. Larger sensors.
Multi-track pro audio I/O
More choices of recording codecs and compression ratios.
Dedicated DSMC touch screen monitors and viewfinders.
Better suited to high end A cam crewed productions.

Like a lot of tech entrepreneurs Jim Jannard is a also a very good submarine in terms of general areas he's been working on for quite a long time in some cases.

I'm not sure where one would set the time line for beginning of KOMODO at ?

I couldn't hazard a guess as to how much Jim Jannard had to spend on HYDROGEN but it has to be in the neighborhood of hundreds of millions of dollars ~ That was a lot of "Big moving parts" as he put it.

@Rakesh M that's interesting about the Venice (good catch ~ fast scan).

Is it wrong that in my head I hear Cookie Monster's voice read every single post of yours?

I'll see myself out....

So that I actually contribute to the discussion today, I have to say that as a SW owner I'm conflicted. I've signed up to upgrade my camera to the newly 6k Dragon-X and timed it for late Feb/early March. The price to do that upgrade is very close to what we're expecting Komodo to come in at, and I likely already own quite a bit of the accessories to make Komodo shootable.

I don't know if I'm better off going through with the upgrade or getting a matching B/gimbal cam for my Scarlet. There are compelling reasons to do both and I can only afford to do one or the other. Decisions decisions...

That's totally OK ~ My old man / family used to work on a couple of Henson productions (in the UK) and knew Frank Oz , so I'll take that as a compliment ~ Even sometimes I read and write these posts as Cookie Monster (voice) too lol

Life is short … Can't always be that serious or smart or right (facepalm).

Where me put my spec sheet … num ne num num num ne mwam.

Next.

* Avi is a vestigial left over from the "Banana-squad"** + mysterious (at the time) HYDROGEN "cookies " ---> Hence Cookie Monster enthusiastically holding a banana -Ironically the aims and wants and technical needs of various "Banana-squad " members have not diminished and for sure KOMODO offers some super possibilities for AR/ VR/ 3d and digital workflow and FX that the other RED cameras can't do. Cookie Monster has grown on me.

** At the time very few people had seen the HYDROGEN LEIA screen, so one notable shooter / cinematographer described and reported the screen as being totally "Bananas" ~ "We" / "We happy few" had not seen the screen until May 9th / 19th ? at Red Hollywood Studios so we were trying to figure out what would make a new nano-tech autostereoscopic screen to be "Bananas" - We eventually went bananas trying to figure that one out and instead founded the "Banana Squad" a group of "peeps" super enthusiastic and interested in Jim Janard's stated goals and vision for HYDROGEN project.
