Komodo-X hand held rig

Hello

It's about the first time a professional camera has such a small height that we could rig it differently and be able to see on top and right of it. It's especially good for handheld and shoulder camera work. I'm happy not to go the riser route and try to build accordingly my rig to have a 180 field of view while shooting.

Here is my work in progress rig :

Rtmotion focus controller with thunbwheel option.
R to Pl mount from Mofage with vari-nd
Octamas module for large battery and OUTs
Zacuto gratical eye (Kameleon is on my Monstro)

I still need some kind of small handle that won't obstruct the top screen.

I like this setup, Patrick.

You might try a top handle that rotates. (I know Tilta and Smallrig and others make them.) I personally use a Smallrig handle that I mount "backwards," with the longer part extending over the lens, or I sometimes use the type of arm meant to hold a monitor-- it easily swings out of the way.

I'm still looking for the perfect EVF mount for this purpose.

How do you like the wooden handles? Trying to find something for my camera that feels good in the hand and doesnt slip of flex like some rubber handles do.

My version 2. Top handle is the nato quick release from Smallrig but I'll change that for a more robust solution. Too dangerous as the lock gets loose with time and the camera could fall...

Great set-up.

I see you're sticking with the Sonosax instead of going with one of the XLR-only solutions that work with the Komodo X/Raptor. (I have the adapter from Mid 49, which is similar to Red's. I chose it because it was available as a package with Mid 49's I/O adapter and side frame.) I'm sure the sound quality is much better, and great to have direct access to the controls-- the monitoring direct from Komodo X is pretty bad. But I love that I CAN go super compact, just adding a Schoeps mk41 on a coldshoe shockmount, unlike the original Komodo.

Mid49 is probalby the best solution for small setup. I'll probalby also buy it. (for gimbal work)
The lack of power distribution (I need ususally 3 power plugs) is the hickup. But we could use the d-tap of the battery.
Use larger batteries with the Ocatmas module is also discharging your mind while shooting documentaries. Less stress on the battery swapping. The Komodo shuts down at 13V.

The camera setup I have is just the right size to be on the shoulder. No protruding behind my back. I can see over the camera on the right side

Agreed. I love the Komodo X, but miss the two 2-pin lemo outputs from the Mutiny I/O plate I have on my original Komodo. I could add a similar device from Octomas or Mutiny to my Komodo X, but would be a shame—it’s so close to being self sufficient now that it’s native v-mount!
