When Komodo first came out people were paying far above the retail price to get one and many were crying the blues that they haven't gotten theirs yet AND now they are trying to get rid of them - Why?

I received mine last month and shot a short film and found no issues with the Komodo I shoot mainly on the Epic Dragon 6k but found the Komodo very useful to my projects. With prices dropping like flies I have been thinking about getting a second one as a backup.

Any thoughts on why the fast turn around this camera has had?

The Komodo is just as good a camera as the day it came out-- it's great even if you set aside the low cost. Mine shot a feature that just got invited to Slamdance.

I don't think the price drop reflects a downgrade in the assessment of its quality. Instead, I think it reflects a group of users trading up to the Komodo X. There isn't a world of difference, but the few features added by the K-X are pretty important to some users.

Beyond that, product cycles even in professional equipment have become ever more rapid. And with that comes the rollercoaster ride of "camping on line outside the apple store" to "no one wants that phone any more, it only has three lenses."

thanks for your reply. VERY cool in getting into Slamdance!!!!!!!! SO far I'm happy with the Komodo camera and now having a special custom case (jason cases) designed for traveling with the Komodo setup. Also I picked up a DZOFilm 12-25mm lens that worked well with the Komodo on my film shoot. I wonder how many people on this forum has more than one Komodo for their production? I'm thinking of getting one of those Storm Troopers but heard pro and con on it.

I actually own the Komodo X, but haven't yet sold my original Komodo-- jobs keep coming up that call for 2 cameras (e.g. an interview shoot with a second angle, or something with gimbal).

One thing I love about owning the two Komodo bodies is that I can just about fit two complete kits in a single carry on-sized Think Tank Video 18. (Or Pelican 1510/1535, for that matter.) I run both off v-mounts, so the only miss is really just that they take different media.

I think we're just in a weird moment in the industry where cameras devalue very quickly right now. Not just RED. But also Arri, Venice, etc. Happening the worst at the top end, but seems to be affecting all cameras. Tech is just evolving so fast, that features and cams devalue fast.

Thanks!

I have the Think Tank V 3.0 and having a custom insert made for the Komodo and misc items from Jason Cases

I sold mine to get a Komodo-X. Specifically, I needed the extra frame rates. I do a lot of work where I needed a little bit better slow motion and the better audio and locking RF mount sealed the deal for me.

That being said, I still adore the OG Komodo. I would buy it again for sure.

I got a used DSMC2 DragonX instead of the Komodo X. There are some really good deals to access the higher frame rates. I also get a good workout, from the heft 😖
