  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Monochrome

Looks like they just started shipping too. Glad that RED continues to offer monochrome bodies for filmmakers.

For those new to these and this concept. The benefit of a "pure" monochrome body is removing the Color Filter Array to produce a Full Spectrum image that is rendered in black and white. The two major gains are increased light sensitivity and a slight increase potentially in detail as you are now dealing with pure luminance information.

I've used previous monochrome bodies in the past as well as having full spectrum CSFs for previous RED cameras. Very fun to explore color filtration as well as IR and UV filtration when going this route. Whole different medium really.

Hopefully the V-Raptor will also get a monochrome twin. Its DR and pleasant 'grain' would certainly make a good blackandwhite look.

If I had to guess, the increase in sensitivity would be 1.3-2 stops without the CSF under most normal lighting conditions. Likely similar to what Komodo Monochrome gets, but a hair more.

I'm certain RED would make that option if they already don't have the ball rolling on it. I'll even toss a cheeky hat in on making one out of the V-Raptor 8K S35.

Yeah Monochrome Komodo is very cool. Such a unique look. I can see some very special people getting two.
