  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thinking of Komodo battery options as the Canon BP-60 (90wh) are very, very expensive = $429

Seems like Swit has a good price (their Sony BP batteries are great on my FS7), but they only 78wh, but two batteries for $470 and they have a D-Tap

Core seems to have a Sony BP as well, 98 wh for $245 with D-Tap. I guess they don't work with Canon chargers, but not a big deal as long as they have their own chargers

Any others?

Also, any idea what the power draw on the Komodo is? If it's pretty low like the FS7, the Swit's should be fine even at 78wh.
 
Wow didn't realize they were so expensive. Those cells can't be worth more than $100. That's quite a markup. At least there are also the lower end 3rd party options on amazon/ebay...

Also I wonder if the smaller BP-A30 batteries are a better matchup for the form factor if the power consumption isn't too high.
 
no no no you are looking at the wrong batteries :)

I know its confusing but you want the ones that are 7.4v, not the 14v.

Look for the BP-955. Thats what we are using here and they are about $140 each. They do make bigger ones ( and smaller ones ) But the BP-955 is a pretty nice size and 2 of them on the back give you about 3 hours of continuous recording.
 
Appreciated the clarification Jarred. Do the 14v work as well? Any advantages to using a 14v battery? Or will that fry the camera?

Also, any chance of swappable battery plates so we might be able to use small V-Mounts like the GDU or even Sony BP-U? Thanks!

I bought a few BP-955s for less than $25-30 on MPB.com. They have some in stock now that are in excellent condition: https://www.mpb.com/en-us/used-equi...cessories/used-camera-batteries/canon-bp-955/

You could probably get all-day power for close to $100 if you buy used. I've never really had these types of batteries lose that much life after using them for 5+ years, so used doesn't concern me much. But will have to test to make sure.

I second all these questions... any advantages to the 14v battery? Any BP-to-V mount adapter plate on the way?
 
The camera takes the 7.4v input from the battery terminals. But it also takes 14.4v in from the DC port. So as Eirik mentions, and which we know some people are doing, you could make an adapter battery plate that went directly off the back to the battery terminals but you would need to step down the voltage if you use those pins. Or, have a little cable that goes from the battery to the DC port on the camera if you wanted to stay at 14v.
 
If you aren't adding any gack to the rig - FF/Wireless TX/etc then why not keep it simple and use the BP955's Jarred suggests. OTOH, if you need to power other devices, I'd be very interested in a battery that mounted under the body with its own D-tap and USB-A ports. On a larger camera I'd just hang a plate for big batteries off the back for counter balance and run a cable - which is totally viable for Komodo if you have a good sized lens, and potentially a matte box, in front. With Komodo, I'm more interested in keeping it compact and easier to mount on gimbals. YMMV.

That adapter is only rated for 2 amps. Based on Jarred's run time estimate of 3 hours on a pair of BP-955's Komodo draws more like 3.6 amps.

What about running one real BP-955 on one slot, then this dummy battery cabled out to a AB/V mount on a battery belt?
 
So if we do the math this means the camera is approximately 25 watts at 7.4V? I take it you can hot swap batteries too?

Apparently any of the genuine Canon BP 7.2 v batteries will work. Jarred said some of the cheap aftermarket batteries won't deliver enough current for Komodo.

D-Tap is usually 12V. Which again, is too much for the battery plate. If you wanted to go from a D-Tap, just go to the LEMO on the back that supports 12v.
 
The GyroVu D-Tap is an active device and down converts 12v to 7.2 volts. But as David pointed out, this converter is not going to work because it tops out at 2 amps. It does look like Komodo is going to pull well over 3 amps when running off the 7.2V battery inputs.
