  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Antenna Boost Options?!?

Can't wait to see the outcome of this. I too ordered those red lollipop antennas. Was always really disappointed with the ~ 5ft wifi range on DSMC2...

Ok got the Pagoda ones as well, looking forward to your testing and which one performed better George.
 
Ok, so, camera is on a tripod and I'm turning it and looking at the RSSI signal strength,
with stock antenna: -48 to -54
surprisingly the signal is a bit stronger when the camera body is obstructing path to wifi receiver.
with lollipop antenna: -36 to -42
that would be a 12 db improvment, quite a lot. The pattern is a bit uneven in different directions.
with the larger butterfly style antenna: -37 to -41
about the same as the smaller antenna.

So no reason to use the bigger butterfly antenna, the small lollipop works great and is a substantial improvment.

Ok so we got very similar results George,
As I posted on Facebook both have nearly identical gains of just over 10db's over stock.

So now it's a metter of taste Hehe.

Nice! So what would you recommend to get? I'm going with your philosophy of keeping everything very tight and small.
 
Ketch! Thanks so much for this thread and saving me time, I couldn't find suitable female lollipops so I had just given up and just used an antenna from my transmitter. But the Foxxer is absolutely perfect, just the right height, can be adjusted if it's in the way for whatever reason, and isn't going to snap off from being bumped. Doing a very quick test around my house, the signal seems to be a lot more solid.

It didn't pass my Elevator Shaft test though, but where a simple wall would mess things up before, now it doesn't. For anyone considering this to be a complete solution for video monitoring, unless you know whoever is monitoring will always be close by and within line of sight, then you may still want to look into a dedicated monitoring solution. My Crystal Swift Pro 800 for example passes the Elevator Shaft test with flying colors.

Thanks again Ketch and to everyone on this thread. This is a no brainer super cheap upgrade for any Komodo owner to make. Bonus, it's a good looking antenna, and red to match lol.

Did anyone else have trouble getting that OEM antenna off? Mine is on really, really tight!

Picked up these which are comparable to some of the other antennas listed in this thread.

Can confirm that the reliability of Komodo's wireless video shows a lot of improvement.
I was even able to step away from the camera about 20', close a door and another 20' down a flight of stairs and maintain a solid picture and control with both an iPhone and iPad connected. The stream quality was on medium for both devices.
With one device connected High quality seemed to work a bit better than the stock antenna.

I have to do more tests particularly out in the wild (shoot in city mixing up in a web of other wireless devices) but so far these lollipop antennas seems like an inexpensive and worthy upgrade for the camera.

Yes - the stock antenna is on there tight but an adjustable wrench removes it pretty easy.

Have a couple shoots this week that I plan to use as a real world test.

The VAS ETHIX MAD MUSHROOM V2works surprisingly well, also tuned for 5.8 wifi. I got about 100m unobstructed.
