Kinefinity MAVO Edge

MAVO Edge 8K | 3200 ISO

By Gafpa Gear

So I was doing my nightshift vlogging in the city with the EDGE (sorry MAVO LF), and when I was on my way back I heard someone screaming my name.
It was a dancer I know from way back, and when he jumped of his bike to greet me, he said ' shall we dance' .
We did one take right away, and then we waved goodbye.
Shot in oversampled 4k from the 8k sensor in prores444 with a Leica m asph 50mm Summilux, even thought they control spherical aberrations quite well, if you open them up fully you get lots of fringing, which some of you will hate and others will love. The grade is as you can expect a bit stylized, and from next week on I will share some stills in log so everyone who dislikes my grade can start grading their own versions of this.

Let me know if you have any questions.

A few shots taken with several lenses including cooke s4, dulens miniprime 58mm (Jackson Chan) , zeiss contax g 45mm, Arri ultrascope 40mm (anamorphic), voigthlander 50mm nokton. was a bit experimenting with the grades, but also these lenses all render skintones differentlyl can you guess which lens belong to which picture?

I wanted to try to get the Skintones, Luminance of the faces and Saturation about the same on the Close-Up examples

MAVO Edge 8K | Harsh sunlight, all highlights retained!

By Jerome GafpaGear

by no means is this the light I would shoot in, its harsh flat sunlight, but it has been requested many times, so I did. Its the typical 11 oclock dutch may light. lots of harshness, and uglyness, but in closeups, you can get something out of it, in wide shot, its just pure meaningless,. If you have a crew you can of course shape this light, add diffusion above, add some nice reflectors by lightbridge etc.
But in this case I did nothing, and I think it shows the dynamic range capabilities of this camera to a great degree, and thats what everyone is after! Enjoy! this was shot with a mixture of lenses, including dulens mini prime 58mm (Jackson Chan), cooke s4 75mm, contax zeiss 45mm g, and a 65mm triptic design lens. Most in Open gate and some in DCi but all in FF mode.

Again, I wanted to try to get the Skintones, Luminance of the faces and Saturation about the same on the Close-Up examples. And I wanted to try to give the impression of a better dynamic range performance.

Kinefinity has now changed the upper End of the Base ISO of the the Dual ISO range from 1280ISO to 800ISO and the lower end of the High Range ISO of the the Dual ISO range from 1600ISO to 800ISO. They also changed the max ISO range from 250ISO-20480 to 250ISO-16000ISO. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems to indicate that up to ISO 2560 that you can choose to shoot with either Zero Gain or Negative Gain.

Kinefinity has now updated the "English" Site's Store offerings to Match the "Chinese" Site's STORE Offerings. I think they are still updating things.

Kinefinity Website-You'll have to change it from the Default Chinese Simplified(which will translate to English) Language Site to the Actual English language site (which will show an English Flag next to it) at the top right-hand part of the page.

MAVO Edge 8K | Faces at Dusk

By Jerome GafpaGear

This is by no means a side by side lens test, I keep those for the last..
I tend to enjoy dusk, the environment can play a big role like the uv coated window behind me which gives a bit of a green bounce, the balcony on top of me which flags a bit of skylight, which creeps in from a nice angle, etc. Its quite controlled light, which has such a huge dimension of qualities to it. I wanted to see how the MAVO Edge 8K would held up in such a condition, I did tweaks here and there in the grading ofc, but graded in respect to the matrix of the Edge. Hope this is another test that can guide everyone a bit in what to expect with the edge. Please not that i shot this in a rush while the light was nice without follow focus or shoulder support hence the microvibrations, hope everyone can forgive me.
This was all shot in 800 iso underexposed about 1.5 stop to middle gray (didnt want to push the sensor), also I included a few s35 crops, to show you how similar the rendition is in crop sensor.
In june we will take a lot more time, to execute more technical tests, with lenses like Sigma art and Zeiss otus.

MAVO Edge | E-nd

By Jerome GafpaGear

One of those hard sought after functions in a cine camera is a full spectrum electronic neutral density filter, which is currently only offered in-camera by Sony. A e-nd is super cool, but most of them hold back 2 stops of light by default no matter if you disable the voltage on them. They are basically translucent lcd screens which go darker when you change the voltage. Kinefinity has them implemented in the Pl and EF mount, and in order to get a clear nd (no nd), you need to buy a 2nd clear mount and swap them when going into a darker environment. With the MAVO Edge Kinefinity found a way to implement the filter in between the sensor and the OLPF (optical low pass filter) so the filter is not exposed to the elements, on top of that its embedded in a motorized stage, and to compensate for refraction thus backfocus issues it has a clear filter installed in the motorized stage so when going from e-nd to clear theres no backfocus issues. The filter can do 8 stops of ND and when you activate the filter (press the nd button 1 second push) you get 2 stops of nd, and from there you can simply use the jogwheel to add more nd with either steps of 1/10th of a stop or 1 stop. To make it even cooler, the e-nd can be used in conjunction with polarizer filters and doesnt get poluted with the so called rainbow effect, and on top of that its color compensated in the color matrix of the full spectrum, So no matter if you dial in 8 stops of nd or 2 your colors and contrast stay straight.! If you have any questions...

`MAVO Edge 8k | Rolling shutter

By Jerome GafpaGear

Like I said the readout time on the MAVO LF was already pretty nice, but with the MAVO Edge this further improved.
So let's think about a worst case scenario:
Shooting Open gate (full sensor readout) and a long focal length, lets do 90mm (contax g), sorry for the jitter, but i found this to be a good example, yes there might be a tiny bit of skew, which you can correct with a good plugin, but imagine doing this same thing in either dci or sensor cop s35 with a wider focal length that matches the angle of view of this shot, and its gone.. I would say that iam super happy with it! We are getting closer and closer having non artefact......

Video played in full-screen mode from instagram page and recorded with a screen recorder because he hadn't made it available on Youtube or Vimeo yet.

MAVO Edge 8K | Broad Daylight

By Jerome GafpaGear

Lenses involved in this quick test are the tiny Contax g 45mm | cooke speed panchro 75 s2 | dulens mini prime 58mm.
I hard to work fast because this was in between rain, only one window of opportunity to get you guys some nice sunny lit shots., so no tripod involved. Let me know what you think!

Jerome,

I Apologize if I offended you by reposting your video, I didn't mean any bad will by doing so. I will take the video down immediately. I'm just trying to show what the kinefinity Mavo Edge has to offer and I value your opinion as an expert on the camera. Again , I apologize to you and the rest of your community!!.
